PSP passes the 5 million mark in Japan
According to Nikkei Keizai Shimbun, the PSP has hit quite the landmark in Japan. By the end of February, Sony has hit 5 million domestic shipments of the portable. While the PSP is always in the shadow of the DS as far as press and sales are concerned, many seem to miss the fact that despite trailing the DS in sales, the PSP is a bigger seller in Japan than most other consoles.
The business news reporter also went on to say that software development is being increased and the PSP is in a growth period. As Sony reminds gamers, the system adoption rate is "the same as that of the original PlayStation, which shipped one hundred million units."
I look forward to the announcements on the new PSP games being created in Japan.

I think that is great - and a reminder that this doesn't have to be a 'zero-sum game' - in other words, both the DS and PSP are amazingly successful game systems - I'm thrilled with both.

Interesting Japan sales comparison at Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&refer=conews&tkr=NTDOY:US&sid=akC4ohHFOXS4)
Basically:
- DS outsold PSP 3:1 total (~15:5 million)
- Wii outselling PS3 ~2.5:1 so far in Japan.

Thanks for the insightful reply, thus proving the intelligence of fanboys ...
I didn't make any note of what that might mean, which is what is contained in the article. Basically Sony has been taking heaping losses in raw numbers and market share - that actually means something to a company, more than crossing an imaginary boundary. At the same time there are reports of retailers all but pulling the systems and pretty much demanding lower pricing because the PSP isn't pulling its weight in terms of value per shelf space. That also matters. Finally, it talks about how the flagship PS3 is not doing well at all in its' home territory - and while Sony loves to shovel 'shipped' numbers while everyone else talks 'sold', there is a clear problem.
Yes, we should all be happy and proud that the PSP is doing quite well. But we also have to be realistic - Sony is the most hated console maker by quite a bit, and are having struggles with their 'Nintendo Killer' handheld and their new flagship PS2 successor. This puts them in a position of deciding where to spend resources, and giving people like us who already love the PSP more little things can't be all that high up on the list.

"and while Sony loves to shovel 'shipped' numbers while everyone else talks 'sold', there is a clear problem."
Most manufacturers refer to shipped hardware as "sold". Which, from a manufacturer POV, makes sense as well. It's just semantics, no really worth a fuss. Either way, there are much less PSPs shipped than DS shipped. This doesn't change anything in the grand scheme of things either.
