More Phil Harrison jargon to gargle
I'm on Spring Break. I'm in Las Vegas, sitting in the Mirage hotel after enjoying some Craps... what better time to admit to you guys that I'll still be bringing you the news? Albeit... 3 hours earlier. Or later... something. I don't really understand how that will work out -- but the amount of postings will be the same. I love you guys that much. With that in mind, more Phil Harrison stuff! This is actually part two of an interview we covered the first part of yesterday -- where Blu-ray will ensure the PS3's success or some such. We'll make a general compilation of his points and you can check them out in more detail for whatever you're interested in.
- Phil says that Sony has always concentrated on user-oriented strategies as is being seen with Little Big Planet and user-generated content (what?)... he cites developers taking big risks with projects like Shadow of the Colossus and God of War, Loco Roco, among others. He says that such games wouldn't have come out of a more conservative marketing strategy, or a multi-platform game.
- Background compatibility: Phil says "calm down". It's all there -- the entire PS-One catalog and an ever-increasing software emulation of PS2 titles. Over 1,000 PS2 titles so far.
- Phil is very confident that Sony will remain the market leader this console cycle. But if he wasn't confident, that wouldn't reflect on Sony very well, would it? Sony may just stay on top, but by a much thinner margin, if we could place our bet.
That's mostly it. Like we said, you can check out the article and read the full interview if you'd like to hear more about any of that, but that's pretty much a superb summation. Anybody have any games I should play for you while I'm here? I'll let you know if I win (or how fast I lose).

"Phil is very confident that Sony will remain the market leader this console cycle."
Interesting. First Sony has to achieve the number one spot this console cycle, before they can remain the leader. At this point, they're number 3.
Can they do it? It's possible, but it's not there at this point.

He meant that they were #1 last cycle, and they plan on doing it again this time.
PS3 has sold almost 1/2 as much as the Wii, without even being on sale in Europe. Thats quite an accomplishment, with its price point and lackluster lineup.
Once AAA titles come out and the price becomes more reasonable, more people will get them and 3-4 years down the road, I can definitely see PS3 in #1 and blu ray as the true successor to HDTV.
but, i guess im kind of biased since i own one.

I think he means remain in the sense of cycles, not at this exact moment in time.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see exactly how sales go after the European launch.

I agree, when price cuts come, sales will increase. Only issue I see is the 360 will be able to do the same, most likely sooner, and the Wii...dunno...I would have NEVER thought a console w/o HD graphics would have done what it has to this point. It remains a mystery to me.
As for Blue Ray winning it for the PS3. I tend to disagree. I think the PS3 has all but won it for BluRay, but personally, I truly believe the future of HD content is via digital distribution.

ShoWest, the biggest movie convention of the year, is going on in the Paris hotel this week. Head on over and get us some free BluRay discs and maybe scope out the new Transformers movie.

@Devils Advocate
True HD content will require a much faster infrastructure and for most to be on it for digital downloads to take over as the distribution medium of choice.

(I think you meant DVD instead of HDTV)
The big problem with this is that 3-4 years down the road, Microsoft will already be working on launching the next Xbox. They'll be getting the multiplatform games first and in their best form (PS3 gets the diluted ports). We'll have to see how PS's exclusives hold up. MGS, FF, and DMC are pretty strong.
I begrudgingly agree with you on Blu-ray. It has way more studio support compared to the competition, even if it provides the better picture fow now. Too bad they are slow as hell to use quality codecs, and chose to use Java (for programming features/menus) of all things. Gross.
"I truly believe the future of HD content is via digital distribution."
I'd believe it. Honestly...downloaded XBL content blows any Blu-ray video I've personally seen away. Too bad it takes 10 years to download it.
