ThreeSpeech at ThreeRooms... some bits of info here and there
This is basically a big PR move with Sony and ThreeSpeech and this Tom Kiss fellow took a lot of very nice pictures for us to gawk at. What a swanky pad! We'd love to sit around and play games at ThreeRooms. Without further ado, we present the knowledge gained at this event.- Phil Harrison took a picture of everyone in a room, popped the memory stick into a PS3, turned on HOME, and in a matter of seconds, he had placed the picture into a frame and it was sitting on a shelf in his personal HOME-space. Pretty neat.
- In another room, he put up a Bravia TV (figures it's a Bravia, huh?) and made a Casino Royale trailer play on it, with proximity-related audio. Oh, then he picked up the TV and threw it down a set of stairs. Not in real life... that would make Nick angry.
- Tom Kiss took some video of Phil and three other guys playing LittleBigPlanet. It's still cute.
- The lobby size of 64 users in HOME is likely to not change, since that's pretty crowded when text bubbles are popping up everywhere.
- Here's a biggie: Remote Play from any wireless hotspot in the world will be available with the 1.6 firmware update. That means anywhere you go with a wireless connection, you can get any video, music, or photos from your PlayStation 3 right onto your PSP. Oh, that's hot.
That's about it. Check out Tom Kiss's (kisses? oh, someone please smirk) article and scope out his pictures and videos

So wait, I'm confused. Is the PS3 getting a firmware update on 3/23? And if so, will it include this Remote Play and Folding@Home, along with software emulation for the new PS3s? Or are these unrelated updates?

James, I'm sure that the update is the one that allows software emulation on the PS3s too. They probably grouped it all together in one big firmware update.

Will I be able to pull up my pictures, music and video on my PC? Id rather do that than my PSP.

I was going to be thrilled just to be able to use Remote Play from my own wireless access point in my home. *Any* Internet-connected wireless access point is going to be great. I have an iPod for music, but for video and photos, you can't beat the PSP screen, and not to have to worry about whether you remembered to copy over what you wanted from your Mac or PC to your PSP will be great -- so long as you remember to get it onto your PS3.

Justin:
No to the PC. Gotta pick up something like LocationFree for that.
James:
There is a huge firmware update coming out on March 23rd. It's 1.6. It will add a huge number of fixes/additional functionality. Though the only ones we know for sure of right now is:
*background downloading, at least in the XMB: maybe not while playing games though (not counting singstar).
*Full Remote Play functionality: Play any media on your PS3 (minus blu-ray movies) on your psp from any wi-fi hotspot.
*Folding@Home added to XMB: Save the world with your expensive gadgets
For European PS3s:
*Increased software emulation capabilities for PS2 titles: The inquirer is an idiot - I'm surprised anything played on a non-patched PS3.
Other than that, its pure conjecture. Other rumors include:
*PS1/PS2 upscaling via software/hardware: Unlikely right now - though maybe by summer...
*Redesigned Playstation Store site: Hopefully
*Improved download speeds: maybe they're opening datacenters outside of japan? just maybe? please?
*The ability to change the background image/color in the XMB: Gonna put a huge ass picture of Angelina Jolie on my TV.
*Improved folder structure for media in the XMB: I got 1500 MP3s Sony. Let me create folders.
The confirmed updates are that, confirmed as 100%. The rumors are just that. Taken from various sites or hints from Sony execs.
Hope it helps,
-Colin

Oh damn, the Remote play thing might tip the scales...I've been thinking about getting a PSP recently since my DS is really boring the hell out of me. If I can stream or load things from my PS3 easily, that's even more of an incentive.
Anyone have any suggestions for a soon to be PSP buyer? :P Any accessories, Games, battery packs, memory, etc I should be looking at?
