Devil May Cry 4 no longer a PS3 exclusive

"Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal," said Mark Beaumont , executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe said in the latest press release.
While making the game accessible to the largest audience possible is admirable, Sony must now ensure that they do not lose further exclusives. Currently, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII are still slated for PS3-exclusive release, but Sony must make every effort that Konami and Square Enix don't follow suit.

Capcom: OOooohh me likey invitations to Paul Allen's yacht. Thanks you for the large cash donation Microsoft, don't worry we won't say anything.
Microsoft: If 360 sales go up so do your bank accounts, those secret bank accounts.
That's exactly how it happenned.
mccomber @ Mar 19th 2007 10:34PM
Damn, that is friggin huge. Can't wait to hear the xbox fanboys on this one...
Looks like this generation is going to be all about the first-party titles as far as exclusives for the ps3 go. Luckily we've got some strong IPs. Definitely going to be that much more important for Sony to keep FF and MGS...
Wonder how long they've been working on the other platforms, or if this really is a new decision they've made.
thatpspkid @ Mar 19th 2007 10:34PM
If any more "exclusives" get ported I am going to start suing for false advertising.
PS. Capcom are sellouts and just made me hate DMC...... a little bit.
Ivan @ Mar 19th 2007 10:36PM
This is good news for me as a multi console owner, I'm glad DMC 4 will be coming out to the 360. I'm hoping however that Sony will be able to keep the rest of their exclusives as going multi platform would have made my purchase of a PS3 useless.
naruto007 @ Mar 19th 2007 10:40PM
since MS is the richest or the most rich company out there am sure giving away some millions to capcom dont hurt them
dam capcom greedy bastards at leasts they should realease ps3 version fist or give extra and exclusive content for the ps3 version.

some big cup loaded of total bullshit
if they want to make titles available to all then bring on to multiplatform that lost planet and deep rising motherfuckers!
n2 @ Mar 19th 2007 10:50PM
This is really no surprise. The PS3 has not taken off as expected, it does not have the installed base the 360 does, and 360 owners have been really receptive of Capcom offerings.
Don't blame Microsoft. Sony created this issue when it set the pricing for the PS3.
If the PS3 weren't so expensive, we wouldn't be talking about this.
bigbeck89 @ Mar 19th 2007 10:56PM
@8 your an idiot, capcom is looking out for themselves and trying to make as much money as they can.
@7 your right, some competition is healthy, i own a 360 and Ps3 and i like to be able to pick and choose, besides now that sony(and microsoft, since im sure their "exclusives" will also start "selling out" also) cant sit back and live off of these games they have to work to impress us, the consumer. we all saw what happened when EA got the exclusive rights to the NFL, we got crappy-to-mediocre games that we didnt have any alternatives to.
of course this could all backfire and in trying to go cross platform they could take short cuts and really eff up the game.

"Looks like this generation is going to be all about the first-party titles as far as exclusives for the ps3 go."
Exactly. Games these days are too bloody expensive to limit their release to only one console, when the other one is also capable of handling it as well. A lot of 360 "exclusives" are also showing up on the PS3 (Oblivion, Saint's Row, Ninja Gaiden) while others are destined to go multi-platform as well for their eventual sequels (Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Condemned, etc.).
Seriously, put yourself in Capcom's shoes. Your ultimate goal, as it is with any business, is to make money. So after shelling out $10 million to develop a title, why would you choose to release a title on only one system when you could release it on two? Unless Sony or Microsoft are willing to cut one hell of a check for you, as a third party developer, it makes very little sense to keep your game "exclusive" to one console.
What's with all the screaming though? It's not as if DMC4 is going FROM PS3 to 360. Owners of both systems will get to enjoy the title (which hopefully doesn't start a Trek-like quality fluctuation pattern), so what's the big deal? We play games to enjoy them, right? Does it really matter if Joe down the block, with his Halo 3 hoodie, also gets to enjoy the game too?
Unless your job depends on the success of Sony's console over Microsoft's (and I'll assume that applies to nobody here, since I doubt someone like Mr. Hirai is taking part in this discussion), I fail to see any significant reason for people to be "pissed off" over this news.
Jason B. @ Mar 19th 2007 11:10PM
I think the problem people have is the company over and over again claimed that the game was exclusive. I don't have a problem with a game going multi-platform, but don't lie about it being exclusive when you had another version in development all along.
mccomber @ Mar 19th 2007 11:10PM
"of course this could all backfire and in trying to go cross platform they could take short cuts and really eff up the game."
That's the only thing that I'm worried about with multi-platform. Each system is going to have strengths to exploit, and if we have to accept games that are made with both systems weaknesses in mind then everyone loses.

It's a shame that Microsoft has to resort to monopolizing tactics instead of themselves doing the work, as in doing some nice titles themselves other than Halo and buying exclusives left and right.

I'm also not sold on the idea that either title will be ported to PS3 (regardless of any possible contract they may have had with Microsoft over those titles), which is why I was trying to say that future titles in each franchise will likely show up on both systems.
Seriously, unless Peter Moore hand-delivers a giant case of cash to Capcom's offices (which is always an outisde possibility), Frank West WILL be showing up on the PS3.
As far as "monopolizing tactics" go, all three console makers play that game. It's a part of business, and while we as consumers may not like it, Microsoft certainly didn't invent it.

I own a 30 also and if I knew there was going to be no PS3 game I would have never bought another system.
I should have just stayed with my 360.
SONY Make PS3 games lots of them and fast.
I payed over 700 dollars for the PS3 and I only have one game for it and I am using GOW2 on my PS3. But that game should have been a PS3 only game.
So thanks for nothing Sony.
Bangbang... @ Mar 19th 2007 11:33PM
If you want developers to stop porting games over to the 360, then you have two options.
1.)Get your friends to buy a ps3 or two.
2.)Buy more games. A lot more games.
Game developers have to make money and right now, the xbox 360 is the place to make money. Over the past year, 360 sales have soared on both the hardware and software end. Developes now know that games have to be really bad to not sell well on the 360. Even the worst selling games( viva pinata, the godfather, and full auto to name a few) sell millions.
So developers have to make a choice,
A.Make a game exclusively for the ps3(3million sold with an attach rate of 4.3) and hope it breaks even or
B.Port it over to the 360 (10 million units sold with an attach rate of 6) and know it will.
Max @ Mar 19th 2007 11:37PM
You guys are all whining little bitches. Lets say dead rising sold 1 million copies. So thats 10 million 360s to 1 million game copies sold. Now lets say there is 2 million ps3s. That is only 200,000 copies sold, not a lot and most definitely not worth it.
Bangbang... @ Mar 20th 2007 12:03AM
bootsielon
I think your right. I think capcom does have an incentive to keep dead rising and lost planet exclusive to the 360. And I think that reason is money.
The ps3s architecture is completely different from the 360. It would take a major overhaul and a great deal of time to port these games. And that cost money. A lot of money.
Now consider that the ps3s install base is still pretty small. Therefore the potential return on that investment is proportionately small. Its risk vs. reward. Your asking Capcom to take a large risk by porting a game that has already made them a profit for a small reward. Its not worth the time. This is the same reason they didnt fix the SD text in dead rising. big risk, little reward.
Vincent060 @ Mar 20th 2007 12:09AM
I'm not so much mad at the fact that it will be multi-platform so much as I'm sfraid about what might happen to the franchise. Look at what happened to Crash Bandicoot. Back when it was a PS exclusive, it was a HUGE hit. But when it went multi-platform, it just wasn't the same. But then again, it was mostly because they switched developers, so it wasn't the same. Hopefully the same doesn't happen here.
Also, since the Blu-ray discs can hold more data, I hope it will at least have more features on the PS3 then the 360. It would seem like such a waste to have all that space and only use the same amount as a regular DVD.
Jonah Falcon @ Mar 20th 2007 12:17AM
Everyone knew Capcom would makes this for the 360. Why? Look at how many millions of copies of Dead Rising and Lost Planet sold EACH.
Anyway, it's not like Capcom dropped DMC4 for the PS3.
Darrel Hormeku @ Mar 20th 2007 12:42AM
Everyone seems to forget that to play the first three you still need a Sony console. From the looks of it Sony is better of supporting the PS2.
G-Man @ Mar 20th 2007 1:08AM
Sorta reminds me of the Resident Evil 4 issue, it was suppost to be exclusive to the Gamecube but was announced for the PS2 just a few months before its release. Sounds like same-old Capcom to me...

"It's a shame that Microsoft has to resort to monopolizing tactics instead of themselves doing the work, as in doing some nice titles themselves other than Halo and buying exclusives left and right."
Any credit I've given your posts in the past has now evaporated. With the above lame, bullshit excuse for Sony loosing another exclusive, your inner fanboy is clearly out of the closet.
Instead of crying and pointing fingers at Microsoft, place the blame squarely where it belongs: Sony. If they weren't so damn arrogant about pushing their BR via the PS3, they could have had a reasonable price point, FOR THE MASSES, to effectively compete. No. Their arrogance, and to some extent believing their own hype has led to this. I hold Sony completely responsible for these exclusives going down the drain. I am beginning to wonder why the hell I shelled out close to a grand for this.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. PS3 has been a God-send for Blue Ray, and has likely salvaged it and has certainly put the hurt on HD DVD, but Blue Ray (due to it's cost) is killing the PS3.
mccomber @ Mar 20th 2007 2:02AM
Ok, seriously, those of you claiming that even the worst titles on the xbox are selling millions (emphasis on the plural in that one)... that's just plain funny. Viva Pinata, by all accounts a great game, will be doing good to sell half that in it's entire lifetime. In North America it's barely shipped a quarter of a million, and lets face it, this is the Xbox's strongest market by far. Dead rising has sold about 1.1 million, worldwide, and I doubt that number will change dramatically at this point. In fact, Gears is the only title that has broken the 2 million mark, and has done so quite well at nearly 4 million. In the end, that means around 4/10 xbox owners have purchased it. That hardly means that releasing a title on the 360 is a guaranteed way to break even folks. Yes, titles currently sell more on the 360 because of it's larger install base, but we're not talking about easy million sellers at this point.

Capcom is showing everyday how their business isnt going right.

They are probably in financial problems, since they keep closing their ps2 game servers...
If Monster Hunter 3 makes it to 360, im gonna stop buying capcom products.

Cry a little more. I mean come on guys capcom isn't EA. Where they make crappy games because they port it to everything under the sun. I don't even care that DMC4 is coming to the 360. It's been a huge rumor forever and it was true, so what? Many of you act like microsoft is evil(must of you really do think that because you hate competition, I've noticed). Maybe sony would be able to keep their exclusives if they could pay for them, but they are losing 200 dollars per console, so that really isn't helping them. Just stop acting like capcom just killed you're life or made you get fired from your job. It's a game, for crying out loud.

I love when the 360 fanboys come over just to make a hahaha comment or some lame remark. It just shows their maturity level. Always bringing price in, yet if they look at XBlive fees, smaller drive, and wireless connection add ons, where is the big savings? And no, Im not a PS3 fanboy, as I own all systems. I am a video game fanboy.
I do worry about DMC4 not being a PS3 exclusive, not because I like the game, as I never really got into the DMC series, but like someone else here mentioned; I worry about the quality of multiplatform games. It is pretty much a given than whatever game is made on either system(PS3 or 360), the other could run it(adter developers recode/redevelop it) and look very similar; But I worry about how many corners will be cut so as to make the game easier to develop for both systems at the same time and not take into account any advantages one system may have, beit the PS3 or 360.
Also, like it or not, PS3 discs do hold more than 360 Discs, so could mean short changing gamers by only having 1/2 to 3/4s of what the developers had in mind when originally designing a game exclusively for the PS3. Though I would expect microtransactions to allow more more downloadable content, but it the end, that will just cost the gamer more in the long run.
Having all 3 systems, I'll just buy the one that I believe is best representation of what the developers intended.

Man, I genuinely feel bad for you guys. Glad I made the right choice with my 360.
shase @ Mar 20th 2007 9:46AM
The point with Bluray holding more than dvd wont matter if games go multiplat. Developers wont be dumb enough to have one system use 1 disc and other use 2+. It is a bit of a blow for Sony though and I think they are just "taking the hit" for now. Phil said that keeping exclusives like GTA4 wasnt a good move because the install base wasnt there. I think Sony will be more aggresive with exclusives once the install base is there.
Although MS's buying tactics are "legit" but i think they do it a lot more (at least known to public) than Sony and Nin. I personally dont want this gen to be a "cash throwing gen" where MS throws cash to keep exclusives or port them over and developers becoming hyprocrites saying "Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal," when Lost planet, dead rising are still exclusives. Not saying I am going to play those games but the fact is they are bsing and only fools would believe what they are saying.
rfom @ Mar 20th 2007 10:40AM
Soem thoughts -
1. This is not a big loss by itself. What is VERY worrying for PS3 is the increase in pressure on SE and Konami for THOSE two titles.
2 It will be interesting to see sales on both systems. After all, people with 360 are likely to be the ones who preferred XBOX1 and didnt care for AAA titles like DMC, FF and MGS to begin with - even with the higher base, will anyone buy titles like these? If you look at xbot comments- you dont see any joy over getting a agood game - simply glee at PS3's "demise"
3. This will be a great deal if PS3 gets dead Rising in exchange. However, thats not certain because:
4. M$. Thats a big factor. Why do you Mistwalker is exclusive (even though their main market is japan), why Splinter cell next edition / Crackdown is exclusive, why they were able to buy rare and Bungie. It does seem like Capcom is halfway there.
5. Maybe thats why Sony bought out heavenly to give itself an edge - smart move!! The PS3 would have the GoW series, Heavenly and DMC4 (plus earlier versions of DMC on PS2) in this important genre - versus ONLY DMC4 on 360.
6. This is down to 1st party titles now - that isnt a bad thing really. We all know Sony has a knack of producing really creative titles, and that will stand it in good stead against M$.

I love to see fanboys writhe in pain. MUHAAHAA!!
Actually, I couldn't care less about this franchise. This is a BUSINESS people. A business where they sell GAMES. It is not a personal assault on your manhood. It will not invalidate you if some game goes hither or tither.
We have 3 very good and potentially great systems out now. Enjoy them and relax.
Dragon J @ Mar 20th 2007 10:51AM
Same old Capcom. You can keep Lost Planet though. I really don't see why everyone is upset. I mean RE4 is a perfect example of them showin no loyalty to the underdog console. I'm sur emore than one Gamecube sold because RE was an exclusive. It was the best game to come out that year, and Gamecube fans loved the idea of having something exclusive. Hell even Metal Gear made its way to the Xbox, so it is to be expected. What you WON'T see is the PS3 version of Halo 3. Why is that? 360 Fanboys will tell you something ridiculous like the PS3 can't handle it. The reason is the mighty dollar. I'm sure MS got Bungie a gang of cash and contracts that permit them from porting games to other consoles from here on out. It's just business man. Enjoy your PS3 and Blu ray movies and don't sweat the small stuff. Besides, God of War 2 is the best thing going right now on ANY system. Get on board...
