Leave your PS3 on for a good cause this Sunday night!

While the PS3 won't bring about world peace or solve world hunger, there's a good chance that it can help cure cancer. But your PS3 can't to it without you. With firmware update 1.6 just around the corner, it's time to do your part for humanity. This week marks the first ever Sunday Night Foldathon in support of Stanford's cancer research efforts.
"The S.N.F event is simple. On Sunday Night (March. 25th 2007) everyone who wants to participate in the S.N.F event simply turn there PS3 on and start the folding program, could be anytime you want or when you goto bed, you may let the program run as long as you want but would be great if it could atleast last till 7am Monday morning, its all up to you since anything helps. This is to see how much help we (the playstation community) can be for this program and to show them that the feature is being widely used and maybe saving lives in the process."
Let's use the comments section as a virtual "pledge card." Let everyone know that your committed to leaving your PS3 on Sunday night in support of this great initiative and to help make the world a better place. Truly, this is a time for fanboys to unite!

Leaving it on all night Sunday. I leave for work at 6:00 PM and don't come home till 7:30 monday morning. I'll turn it on before I leave and set a fan lightly blowing in front of it. Houston is heating up and with my PC running, the room can get kind of warm.
john @ Mar 21st 2007 10:58PM
mine will be on. will there be any kind of results or any kind of data to show that it does make a difference
RatBoy @ Mar 21st 2007 11:03PM
Since folding@home is probably the addition in 1.6 that I am most excited for (even more than background downloading if you can believe it) I totally pledge to leave my ps3 on Sunday Night.
I mean how can you beat curing cancer while you sleep?

oo7ev @ Mar 22nd 2007 12:29AM
Wow, I really didn't think that this would catch on with so many people, as PC screen savers like this have existed for years, but I'm glad to see many people utilizing it and actually enjoying it.

There should be an online leader board of who has had their PS3 folding for the longest
The people who do the most folding each week/month/year/etc should win PlayStation Store $$$

1.6 is out now. And guys, make sure at least one work unit has completed and been uploaded to Stanford. Completing one work unit could take anywhere from 4 to 24 hours or possibly even more. The current WU my PS3 is processing (p3128) will be completed in about 9 hours. Also, after you download and install the Folding@Home client, enter the client and press triangle to change your username (and team number if you're on a team.)
ck @ Mar 22nd 2007 6:17AM
I have my client up now. Is there a team to join?
Derrick @ Mar 22nd 2007 2:44PM
I can do this every day of the week. Except sat. and idk about sunday. Monday-Friday when i go to school 7am-1:10pm est i can let it do that. So, im getting a SHIT load of time and it doesnt affect me at all. LOL Come people lets cure these diseases.
Phil @ Mar 22nd 2007 6:43AM
Yes indeed i will
ill trooper @ Mar 22nd 2007 7:13AM
Well, I downloaded it, I'm folding now... Not terribly exciting! Looks cool... Not much is really explained on changing visuals, etc., so I pressed every button I could...
'Select' switches between the globe view w/data, globe view with percentage, and 3D ball-and-stem view
The analog sticks control rotation and zoom
I'd love to think the glowing dots around the globe represent PS3s crunching numbers... But maybe they're just cities? Watching the video from theguy in Japan on Kotaku, who downloaded and had it running very early yesterday (likely one of the earliest people running it) the guy seemed to be the only dot on Japan... But maybe it was only the glare and the simulated 'daytime' over Japan.
