PS3 Sales: Before and After Europe (this is Before)
We're basically going to go on what's splattered on the VGCharts website here. As of yesterday evening, the count for PS3 sales in North America and Japan numbered 2.15 million. We're going to see if we cross the 3 million point by next friday. Place your bets!Yeah, well, the site has already been updated to include over half a million already, so the number is at 2.67 million. The bet to get the PS3 up another .33 just doesn't seem... fanboyish enough. Would anyone dare to say that in one week, the PS3 will rocket up to 4 million? We'll stick to 3 million and have a fairly sure shot at being right. If anyone wants to make a different estimation, knock yourselves out

3.2

I'll say 3.3

I think it will be over 3M. If the price is dropped as speculated in October, the they should hit their goal of 6M by the end of the year.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 23rd 2007 11:12AM
Now that they are in supply, I bet they could sell a million in a week. I'll guess around 3.5m.

If you want to consider yourself a reputable news source (which I think, in most cases, you are) you need to be more careful with who you source. VGcharts, though sourced often by the fanboy sites, is not a reliable source. It is one man's guesstimation of what sales numbers are based on sources like Famitsu, Media Create and NPD. Any number he posts that is not confirmed by a readily available published source is just a guess as good as yours or mine.
Just posting him because I think that too many sites are giving in to misinformation by posting his numbers as if they were a reliable source.

@ not.at.all -- I've actually heard this before, but it's tough to find a reliable, reputable source that separates total sales by area like that. There have been a few mentioned, but they suffer from similar accusations. If you've got a better site in mind, please bring it to our attention! We'd love your suggestions! =)

vgcharts use NPD and media create numbers we can see all the numbers in the left in details.
For Europe they have sources...
In all the internet I think it's the best place for real numbers and every month or weeks they use the same numbers that I see here or on IGN, 1up etc... So I trust the total and if I'm not sure I can check every month numbers in the left... and surprised they are the same as NPD and media create...
Sometimes like today they use estimated number in the front page... but If there's a mistake the change it so it can be perfect with official numbers.
I think that in the end of the month PS3 will have not far from 3 millions worldwide sells.

A few more weeks and we should have a quarterly report from Sony. The best source of information on any company is their financial filings.

Yeah...like Enron.

His sources for American and Japanese sales data are accurate though. M-create and NPD are the sources to get the info from for console sales. These are readily published sources and considered to be the authority on the sales in their respective regions. These numbers aren't "one man's guess" but a complilation of numbers put out by respected and reliable sources for the most part.

The fact the the wii has sold more units than nintendo has shipped makes me worry about this chart.
I still expect the ps3 to reach 3 million before the summer. Thats nearly 500,000 units world wide every month until the summer slow down.
rfom @ Mar 23rd 2007 2:46PM
In other words, more sales than the 360 despite a higher price than 360 (unless, of course, you want multiplayer on 360) despite a delayed Europe launch, cannibalisation by PS2, more competition from wii, and the 360's 1-year advantage in games. Impressive!!!!
Kagari @ Mar 23rd 2007 3:37PM
The Dream Cast had a one year advantage too...

Selling 500,000 units world wide per month isnt all that great. Think about like this, if the 360 had sold 500,000 units world wide every month from nov 05 until present day, they would have only sold 7.5 million units in a 15 month time span. Impressive?

If you're a publically traded company, and you publish a quarterly financial report, you have to be truthful. In fact, because of Enron, there's been changes to way Accounting is handled and there are newer reporting requirements now. If you're audited and they find you to be less than truthful, there are consequences from either the government and/or investors. Often in financial reports you'll find information that you won't find anywhere else, including concerns about the company or competitors, or products. Don't listen to PR people whose job it is to spin positive news their way. Always dig through the companies financials to get a picture of what's REALLY going on.
As far as NPD, they do their best to "estimate" based on data they gather from a limited portion of the market and then they use formulas to estrapolate the market as a whole. Their numbers aren't meant to be used as factual, but rather it's for market indicators and trends. If you look closely, you'll notice their numbers are often rounded, and occassionally they're revised after being published.

@Bangbang - The last shipped data from Nintendo was a couple months ago yeah? The charts are fairly up to date and the Wii has been consistantly selling out. If you have a recent number that contradicts the data I would love to see it.
@Frankie - Selling 500k a month for the entire lifespan of the console would put the total sales (assuming a 5 year lifespan) at 30 million. That is 50% more sales than either the Xbox or Gamecube. While not super impressive, it is also not bad at all.

Three Hundred and Sixty MILLIONS!! Wiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!

Actually, the last word from nintendo was they would have 1million units ready for launch and 4 million units before Jan 2007. There has been no addition numbers coming from Nintendo. In fact the only thing that has been said by Nintendo's PR, is that demand for the wii is outpacing supply and that they were working to ship more wii's to fill that demand. The reason his numbers stand is because There Is No Offical Data to support or contradict his numbers, and there will be no offical data until nintendo publishes the financial report at the end of march. Im not saying that the wii will fail to sell 6 million consoles before the end of march, just that this chart had that number listed well before 6million wii's were shipped.
And selling 500,000 units per month over a lifetime is good. Selling only 500,000 units per month over the first year is almost perceived as failure. For example, The 360 averaged 650,000 units per month over its first 15 months and analysts are always calling its sales "lack luster".

"Selling 500,000 units world wide per month isnt all that great."
The 360 sold 500,000 units per month till Q3 last year - with NIL competition
The PS3, if it sells at the same, despite the 360's one-year lead in games and competition from wii, would be impressive
"The 360 averaged 650,000 units per month over its first 15 months"
Thats a factually correct...and logical rubbish. The 360 targets 12mn in 16 months - and close to a third was in the xmas 2006 season. Leave out that month and sales are about 500,000 a month.
