Every PS3 gamer gets an "Elite" system
As fanboys of the competition, we feel it's necessary to write a little about the new XBox Elite thing. Is this flamebait? Most likely, but it's our attempt to look at the "value" behind the system and why the PS3 is still the most badass for the price. Joystiq commented on the new features coming to the XBL Marketplace and we have to tip our hat to Microsoft -- those are some great features and we're not sure why Sony hasn't implemented similar ones, since Sony is a gigantic music and film distributor. When Joystiq cracked the price and details of the system, we looked it over and said "really? That's pretty unimpressive." We're not alone. Sure, the 120GB hard drive is nice, but PS3 owners can easily swap their 60GB for whatever size they want. About the unimpressiveness, though, even the editors over at EGM/1UP are pretty upset. "No built-in HD-DVD? No built-in Wi-Fi? This new Xbox 360 SKU hardly seems 'Elite' to me. I'm all for a higher-end model, but the lack of those key features makes this one feel half-baked. And actually, this announcement serves as just another reminder that the PlayStation 3 -- at least in terms of hardware -- still offers more." Word.
To top it all off, Dave Karraker, bigwig of Sony America, gave PS3 owners the ultimate compliment and the semi-ultimate smackdown on Microsoft's "new" product: "We view every single PlayStation consumer as an elite consumer. Meaning no one is going to get shortchanged at the end of the day, whether they bought one on day one or just yesterday." We are elite, folks! What do you guys think of the new 360? Is it worth the trouble, worthless, or an inferior attempt to offer what the PS3 always has -- and always will -- offer?

Yeah Kudos for MS for making such an idiotic move... Seriously though.. if they included HDDVD and built in WIFI and REMAINED at 480 then its kinda a critical blow to PS3... This deal is better than PS3 20gig version though but no where near the 60gig version
JRA81984 @ Mar 28th 2007 1:00PM
I just bought a 360 like 3 months ago.... its definitely not worth it to get the elite, its not all that different to make me want to run to get the elite. if it had HD-DVD maybe. I dont consider this a competator to the PS3 what so ever. 120 gig hard drive? so what? thats pointless. Especially when you can get that separate.
KillarClown @ Mar 28th 2007 1:03PM
Here in canada you can pick up a 120gig ATA for like 120 bucks.. That's under 100 USD. The new M$ drive will cost USD 180 if purchased on its own...
WHYYYYYYYYY?
Oh, and most unimpressed about the rest of the new "features".
I heart my PS3.
Kayura @ Mar 28th 2007 1:10PM
Yes flamebait. However, good flamebait.
You shouldn't have to re-buy your console. It defeats the purpose. At least I can drop an size hard drive into my PS3 at a REASONABLE price.
180 bucks for a 120 gig HDD? Retarded.
Matt @ Mar 28th 2007 1:13PM
It's not like MS just announced Xbox 720. They've just added a few slightly upgraded features to an already successful system. It's only $80 more. There's no need for any discussion.
Matt @ Mar 28th 2007 1:19PM
@4 MS isn't saying 10 million people have to re-buy a console. Sony didn't ask PS2 owners to re-buy the slim PS2 with integrated ethernet. They same reason Apple didn't ask 60gig owners to re-buy the 80 gig. People, please stop talking about this. I own a premium 360 and i will never need a 20gig hard drive. However, a lot of people have taken advantage of the new television and movie downloads on Xbox Live.
Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 1:22PM
No one seems to be saying it, but I'm getting the idea here was that Microsoft saw that some people are willing to pay the "high" price for a PS3, and figured they could sway some of them their way by offering an "elite" edition. It's kind of like they're admitting that there IS justification for HDD and HDMI, and that they really screwed up not including it. This move looks pretty bad for Microsoft, as they've now shrunk the gap between the 360 and PS3 price, without adding enough to it to make it comparable. In most ways it's on par if not inferior to the insignificantly more expensive 20 gig PS3!
saccorator @ Mar 28th 2007 1:33PM
I think Microsoft may be shooting themselves in the foot releasing the Elite edition so early in the Xbox 360 lifecycle. Gaming consoles are far from Ipods...meaning console gamers are not going to upgrade to the latest and greatest console each year...this is not the PC gaming business. I think it was hypocritical of Microsoft to be a primary backer of HD formats (VC-1 for example) and yet exclude HDMI (which was the chosen interface for High Definition at the time the Xbox 360 was developed) from their next generation console. I also think the Elite edition adds skepticism about Microsoft and the Xbox brand since new added features force the consumer to purchase a new sku instead of adding onto an existing platform/sku. I think it leaves current Xbox 360 owners wondering what else have they or will they miss out on in the future. I think that many Xbox 360 owners and potential buyers will now more closely evaluate and analyse the value between the PS3 and Xbox 360...and let's face it, the 20GB PS3 is looking better now that the Xbox 360 Elite has been announced. As a matter of fact, if I were Sony I would market the 20GB PS3 much more and consider a $20 price drop.
IB @ Mar 28th 2007 1:36PM
Ha ha ha Microsoft. Look they've just tried to make their console more like the PS3; colour and everything. Seriously how many times has MS rapped Sony for "forcing HD on people" now Peter Moore is saying that gamers have an "insatiable desire for it". Since Sony released their console they've been scrambling around making half-assed additions to try and imitate PS3 functionality. All the while they try and spin that that funcitonality wasn't needed in the first place: HDD, HDMI port, more hard dive space etc. Tsk tsk. And Stef Geiger is absolutely right about closing the price point gap. MS are walking a dangerous line. Also what's all this multiple configerations and SKU's of the same console? I play console because its a standard. I don't want to be in the same situation PC owners are in. Its fine to change the form factor (like PS2 slimline) but not functionality.
Jason B. @ Mar 28th 2007 1:43PM
@Matt
Sony didn't release the Slim PS2 until 4 years later as a way to make the cost of the console cheaper, not one year later.
Did you also know that this new console will not feature the new 65nm chips that reduce the heat in the console?
I really don't understand how lazy you have to be to pay for television shows that you can get just by changing the input on your tv to the one that connects to your cable or satellite. Movies, I can understand. TV shows on a non-portable machine? No way.
Josh @ Mar 28th 2007 1:40PM
The 360 Elite should also come with wifi and the 65nm chip at the very least in addition to the 120 GB HD and HDMI. I say get rid of the Core altogether, drop the price of the premium to $300, Elite's price is set to $375 and $75 for the 120 GB hard drive for the people who want to upgrade. The current pricing structure with the features that come with it is not acceptable for the Elite system or the 120 GB hard drive standalone. MS is in for a rude awakening when they release the Elite.
Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 1:41PM
Hey... I guess this should mean the end of MS fanboys saying Sony is ripping people off - the Elite is a mere $20 less than the PS3, and still doesn't have wifi or blu-ray.
Hey, here's a fun question, how much do you Sony would sell a DVD based, non HDD, non wifi, non HDMI unit for? My guess: Less than what the Premium 360 sells for.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Mar 28th 2007 2:14PM
I'm an Xbox360 owner, and I'm sure I can speak for a large number of gamers out there when I say that we don't care who has the better specs. The only thing stopping me from buying a PS3 right now is its lackluster game line-up, but I'm hoping that will change this year and that titles such as Lair (amongst others) will sway me to get a PS3. Bottom line: Sony had a rough start, kind of like someone else we know (for those of you who remember, Xbox360 didn't have such a stellar launch line-up either), but in the end I hope they recover and give me plenty of good reasons (read: GAMES) to buy a PS3. For you technophiles out there who want to continue ranting about who's got Blu-Ray or HDMI built-in, carry on with your flaming. HDMI is most definitely a technology that looks ahead to the future, but if there are no GAMES worth playing, I'm not buying a PS3 just to say I have HDMI and Blu-Ray. Give me GAMES!!!!
Matt @ Mar 28th 2007 2:27PM
@12 (Jason B.) I realize that and no one is denying this is clearly a response to Sony and a way to keep awareness and excitement about the 360. I wish they would have released this for $399, dropped the premium to $299 and discontinued the core.
As for TV shows etc. I agree, but since last November when the TV and Movie download section of Xbox Live launched it has become...
the number one online distributor of television and feature film content in the living room
the number two online distributor of television and feature film content, second to iTunes.
Is currently the ONLY online distributor of major feature films and television programming in high definition (HD) resolution.

The 360 comes with the ability to play and display in HD right out of the box in EVERY version unlike the PS3, hell the "elite" 360 even comes with HDMI cables.
Justin @ Mar 28th 2007 3:06PM
"If you ever hear someone say “Blu-Ray isn’t needed for this generation,” rest assured they don’t make games for a living. At Insomniac, we were filling up DVDs on the PS2, as were most of the developers in the industry."
Where's your HD-DVD games?
"The problem with including a hard drive in one version of the 360 and not in the other is that developers can’t use it for the games. Or, at least, they can’t use it for any required features. When you are guaranteed to have at least a 20 GB hard drive in the console(PS3), you can write your load caching routines around it, or use it for your application’s storage needs. To a developer, an optional hard drive is roughly equivalent to no hard drive at all."
"Another advantage of the PS3 is that it will let you put in any third party hard drive you want."
Nice.
"The PS3’s eight parallel CPUs (one primary “PPU” and seven Cell processors) give it potentially far more computing power than the three parallel CPUs in the Xbox 360. Just about any tech programmer will tell you that the PS3’s CPUs are significantly more powerful."

-Quotes from Brian Hastings - Insomniac Games
Ah I love those. But seriously, the new 360 looks cool. It should have looked cool to begin with, but hey, now it does. More storage space is awesome. Especially with their cool downloading service. Good job with the HDMI addition. It does makes a huge difference to me, way to go. 1080p though...not exactly, it just formats a 720p signal to 1080p. (Upconversion, ie BULLSHIT)Hopefully we'll start seeing more 1080p PS3 games come out so that we can brag about Blu Ray some more. Oh and expect that free HDMI cable that comes with the 360 to cause massive amounts of screen flicker and color problems. And the hard drive price is hilarious. Why arent these people getting a PS3 again? PS3 already has all this stuff and looks cooler...and wifi...and more expandable...and open...and ah screw it yall get the point.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 28th 2007 3:08PM
We all saw this article coming. It's justified if you are just looking at HDMI and hard drive space. Some people find those things important, but most gamers really don't. I find it interesting how everyone online makes a big deal about HD-DVD and Blu-ray...but out in the real world, most interested in gaming just want to play games. That leaves HDMI with little value.
So it's true. Microsoft is catering to people's stupidity. But it would be stupid not to, really. People pay too much for iPods, PS3's, and Plasma TVs, so why not take advantage? The consumer continues to prove that they are willing to drop dollars for things they don't need. I still have no idea why I wasted the $100 for the 60GB PS3 when I don't care about card readers, cheap-looking chrome trim, worthless wireless connections, or hard drive space on a non-PC. See? They won; for some reason I assumed it was better and had to have it. They got my $100...for essentially nothing in return (well, more like $600 for nothing). The 360 Elite will end up doing the same for a few. Being unimpressed with HDMI and not needing hard drive space...my like of the new color won't be enough to put an "elite" in my rig.
A better question is: "When will MS change the pricing for the Premium and Core packages?" When they do, then they cater more to choice and wallet sizes, leading to more buyers. When Sony does the equivalent, we'll see the same.
Justin @ Mar 28th 2007 3:10PM

Justin @ Mar 28th 2007 3:13PM
Suicide Ninja!!! For the last time Blu Ray matters!!!!!!! Larger disc size means that you can fit more information on a disc. It means better compression which means better graphics, bigger games with better graphics, better sound etc. etc. etc. These people that say Blu Ray doesnt matter for games are just retarded.

@Justin
I agree, Blu Ray does matter, at least game wise. Being able to include more stuff onto a Blu Ray then a DVD is a big thing to developers. And to the people that say exclusives don't matter, the thing is that the games won't take advantage of each systems capablities. A game that is shared by both the PS3 and the 360 won't have as much content as a game that is exclusive to the PS3. Unless of course the developers can add content to the PS3 one without adding to the 360 one.
Vincent060 @ Mar 28th 2007 4:33PM
Plus, I don't see what people have against the PS3 controller. I say it's better then the bulky 360 controller. I agree the triggers could have been better designed. For that they should have done what Microsoft did and copy them from the Dreamcast controller. Plus, it seems that Microsoft took a page from Sony and moved the black and white bottons to the top. It seems the 360 is starting to look more and more like the PS3 every day. Though in Microsofts defense, the Elite's colorscheme looks more like the original Xbox then the PS3. Even so, why would one want to look like a last-gen failiure? I thought Microsoft disowned the original Xbox and has denied it ever existed?:P
Raz @ Mar 28th 2007 4:37PM
M$ is desperate, come on, do you see Nintendo hating and bashing the PS3 like M$ does? Did you see Nintendo crashing PS3 launch "party" in Europe? How lame must somebody be to do that? Throwing money around, buying DMC4, buying a manga&anime series to try and make Blue Dragon sucefull in Japan, and now with Xbox "Elite" they are going against everything they bashed to try and make the Xbox something more like the PS3... Where is that dude thanking Sony for their mistakes? Phil Harrirson should show up now and thank M$ for shooting themselves in the ass...
SlavedHeart @ Mar 28th 2007 4:41PM
The worst thing of all... and this is coming from someone who's PS3 has caused relationship problems already... is that I actually want this thing. I know all about being Sony Elite and all that... but MS is starting to pull ahead... the titles that are going multi-platform are almost all old PS exclusives (unless anyone can tell me when I'll get to play crackdown, halo (yeah right) and more... yes I know about publisher exclusives, but this is a little rediculious). And the exclusives are staying exclusive to the M$ x-crock. Oh, and last but definatly not least, I got a HD tv to serve my HD PS3, but the hd content is so lacking on the 3 for download (like hd shows) right now, that baring any serious update, I'll get an elite just for the HD-id-ness...
Usually, I pride myself on well written comments to articles like this but this time, I really just feel like an ape when I say, me like black xbox, no need comment good... hd-box good... fire bad...
ShaleX @ Mar 28th 2007 5:43PM
Why would the Xbox 360 build in an HD DVD player? Espically for movies... HD DVD isn't doing so good. MS isn't going to pick a pony in the format war, and that would have been a worse idea.
MS has said more than once if Blu Ray is sucessful, they would release an add on for that format. Sony may have a stake in the format war, Microsoft does not.
BIG RED 077 @ Mar 28th 2007 5:48PM

Not quite true because the new PS3's that are shipping today are shortchanged on backwards compatibility. Oh well, I don't care...my PS3 has a PS2 chip in it, so I didn't get shortchanged!
aragorn @ Mar 28th 2007 5:56PM
Xbox 360 fanboy/Sony hater here... and I'm not gonna deny it... The Elite is a deliberate move agains the PS3... though none of this is particularly surprising to me, as the one thing that struck me was how microsoft's whole business venture seems to be focused primarily on cutting sony down at every pass... and damn, they're good at it.
So basically, microsoft is doing what it does best... smothering the competition and outdoing them in every way... except in style... cuz seriously.... apple anyone?
And as a 360 fanboy... gotta tell you, I couldn't give two flying Fricks about the Elite... and if for some reason I did... I'd have purchased a ps3 (assuming that it'll have at least one must have title... which personally, I have yet to be convinced of this... and yes fanboys, I've seen the ps3 lineup, you don't need to list it again).
Microsoft has received a lot of flack for making a lot of features (ie: hdd, hd-dvd... and whatever) but personally, I've appreciated it. I don't have a HDTV, and I don't plan to anytime in the forseeable future...
It's True that the PS3 does offer the best 'value' as far as total package go... but when I'm stuck buying components that don't even benefit me... seriously.
So... Microsoft builds the elite... very smart if you ask me, because there will always be those people who HAVE to get the latest and greatest...
I just don't happen to be one of those people, which is why i have my middle of the road xbox 360... and odds are, I'm never getting a playstation 3...ever
aragorn @ Mar 28th 2007 5:59PM

The 360 controller bugs me - specifically the shoulder buttons. When using the triggers I can occasionally snag a shoulder button. In Crackdown at least, that's a bad thing, as you end up sharing small spaces with your own live grenades...

Sony fanboys always cease to amaze me. Why did the ps2 slaughter xbox and gamecube? Because of it's amazing library of games. Xbox was a superior technological machine, but the software was what made the ps2 so great. Now that ps3 is out, all sony lovers can do is die defending their hardware specs, claiming that is what makes their system so much better. Yes for 20 dollars more then the elite version you can get a technologically better machine, but the software library is NOWHERE near is vast.

Vincent060 @ Mar 28th 2007 8:56PM
One thing I notice while reading the PS3Fanboy and 360Fanyboy sites is that people, for some reason, think that the PS3 will never have better, or as many, games then the 360. Whatever happened to the vast number of PSone and PS2 titles? I mean sure, some of them might not work properly on the PS3, but still they are alot better then what the 360 currently has. Plus, the one thing that the PS2 had over the Xbox was the games. What makes people think that those games won't have, like, sequels or something on the PS3? I mean like the Ratchet and Clank series, or Shadow of the Collossus. Imagine Shadow of the Collossus with like 50 bosses instead of 16.
And another thing, what are this "great" games the 360 supposely has? The only game I'm even remotely interested in is Gears of War. What games does the 360 have that the PS3 games won't surpass in enjoyment? Forza 2? The PS3 has Gran Turismo. Blue Dragon? PS3 has Final Fantasy.
Stop acting like the PS3 will never have any good games.
pspuser @ Mar 29th 2007 10:00AM
Change is good. Why???? The HDMI i really really really really really really really want bad on the new 360. Plus the 120 gb hard drive is good to. I know you can change your 60 gb for a bigger hard drive on the ps3 but 360 is still a good system. I also cant wait for the new xbox live market place features to. Lets hope microsoft does what they promice.
mb @ Mar 28th 2007 9:16PM
Ok... I can almost understand both sides of the fanboys war, and I agree the lack of PS3 games is hurting Sony. But in time the library should be extensive, just as it took a year for MS to have enough games to make the PS3 launch look anemic.
Now, I just have one question:
Have any of you guys who are slamming either unit because of the inclusion of an HD format actually seen what it looks like on a HDTV?
I have, because I've bought a PS3. And it's beautiful. And I've also connected the HD-DVD to my winXP PC then to my HDTV, and that looks nice as well.
If you haven't experienced either and are simply mouthing off, shut up and buy one. EITHER ONE! I don't care, you cheap b@st@rds.
Just don't post hate comments if you haven't experienced either scenario.
(p.s. It alarms me as well that suddenly, everyone understands what Sony was trying to do with its hardware. Too bad the price is/was high.)
h0mi @ Mar 29th 2007 1:05AM
HDDVD will be terrible for games as long as HDDVD drives remain slower than DVD... the increase in storage is undermined by slower xfer rates.
Keep this in mind- just as with the bluray/hddvd war that software will do more to drive sales than simply cheaper hardware, that also applies to console gaming, especially when preening over features that play little role in improving gaming content.
ck @ Mar 28th 2007 9:38PM
Xbox fan: Movie formats are not the issue - the storage space is. Developers are even saying that 4GB isn't enough now. How is that going to be any less of an issue 5 years from now? MS screwed up on that one in a big way and these sorts of mistakes will be what loses them the race in the medium/long term.
Oh and by the way, the original Xbox was green, not black. Nice try though.

"we're not sure why Sony hasn't implemented similar ones, since Sony is a gigantic music and film distributor."
*I Think* it boils down to the non-propritary hdd in the ps3. If Sony were to allow users to rent and download Spiderman 3 in HD onto the ps3 harddrive, what prevents users from popping out the harddrive, transfering the movie to another device such as a slingbox, an external hdd, zune, ipod,or whatever. There is simply no way to make sure that a 5 dollar HD movie rental doesnt turn into a 5 dollar HD movie purchase. Maybe Sony is working on a software solution (yes, i know they are), but for right now they are faced with the same problem that microsoft had to battle last generation. The only question is will sony fight it like microsoft did with xbox but i'm glad that the elite doesnt have a built in hd dvd drive of wifi. As the modders,or embrace it and take a legal bashing.
As for the elite, its just another option for potential xbox 360 buyers. Its no different than when companies package games and other accessories in and sell it for a few bucks more as a "limited edition".

People can say whatever they want... but I know the Playstation 3 is a good deal and it shows, it shows evertime you try to match up the xbox 360, wii features vs. the Playstation 3 features... 480 + 199.99 for HD dvd = 679.99 or 659.99 if you find the hd dvd drive on sale...

They were considering both of the first original versions.
The 20gb hdd alone cost $89.99. This elite version cost $479.99. Just a year or two ago you can basically get a hard drive and if you do the math, it would be 1 dollar a gig. OK now remember the part when people say xbox 360 with the hard drive isn't expensive.. now they are calling this expensive! Are you crazy?! You guys are flip flopping. If you think of the space of this hard drive alone, then you'll figure out that if you try to multiply the cost of the hard drive to the price of the new one, you'd realize you're getting a good deal. And this is an option tards. Unlike sony, Microsoft is giving you an option. You don't have to buy this version.
$398.99 is the price of the 20 gb hard drive 360 over at amazon and the 120 hard drive alone is $179.99. That's around double the price for 11 times the amount of space for the 20 gig version you idiots. And that's what you all are, close minded idiots. It's only around 120 dollars more than the other version, and if you round it off, if they charged you based on how much gigs they give you, multiplied 89.99 of the 20 gig one by 11 because of the 120 worth of gigs, that would be cost $989.89. And they could even throw off 400 dollars of that and it would still be expensive.
I know they charge way to much for hard drive space to begin with with the 20gig version, but just because people justify microsofts price for it, I wanted to show if that's justifiable, then this is really justifiable.
Learn to do math, you retarded fanboys. If you are all going crazy on the price of this, you have to stop saying the original isn't over priced, because this set is a lot better deal for what you get, even though it doesn't come with a hd-dvd, period.

Gawd, I have been debunked by everyone because I said 11 when I should have said 6. My point has been belittled and means nothing now, ignore my post.. it doesn't have a point.. turn away. Sorry for wasting y'alls time.

Try to counter price points all you want with this Xbox 360 Elite, but here is the bottom line..
You are not forced to buy the $480 console if you prefer what the Core at $300 brings you. With the PS3, you have to spend $500+ no matter what.
