Firmware 3.30 now available on Network Update
What big Microsoft news? Sony sneakily snuck out a new firmware upgrade for PSP: the first in almost two months. Here's the list of the improvements for this firmware revision:- Support for displaying thumbnails for items has been added under [RSS Channel].
- Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
- The size of videos that can be played under [Video] has been increased.
- Support for displaying thumbnails for content saved in the "VIDEO" folder of a Memory Stick has been added under [Video].
[Thanks, Reuben!]

....WHAT? This is HUGE news if it's true. I'm testing right now. I bet it's not as good as it seems...
NINTEN @ Mar 28th 2007 12:53AM
Where do I find this Update at???
Colin @ Mar 28th 2007 12:52AM
Stef...get back to us...this is another good news story for the PSP.
Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 1:09AM
Nope, can't get it to work for the life of me. Maybe there are some other weird things I need to do. I'm using mpegStremclip, which is a great OS X program to make 480x272 videos, and no matter how I name them and where I put them, they just show up as corrupt.
Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 1:24AM
No... it doesn't work. I think all they've done is allow larger files, as in, "longer movies"... Possibly because they're about to launch a huge online movie store like XBL/iTunes?
SirPasta117 @ Mar 28th 2007 2:00AM
lol Where did the FW 3.11-3.29 go?
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Mar 28th 2007 2:03AM
Kind of a useless firmware update huh? Well the thumbnail support for items under an RSS feed would be kind of nice. Besides that I see no reason why Sony launched this.
luke97 @ Mar 28th 2007 5:39AM
If it's longer videos, why do they need to put it? Normally, the max length is around 6 hours 30 min.
RoDrAs @ Mar 28th 2007 6:08AM
Now let's wait for a decrypter and a new OE...
Apostolov @ Mar 28th 2007 6:49AM
Lol... on the official web site is still 3.11 the lastest update... there is no 3.30 from where did you get this? i will wait untill the official web site allows the download for the new one..
Jason @ Mar 28th 2007 6:58AM
@ Apostolov
Sony usually doesn't put up information about their updates on their site until a few hours or a day has gone by. It seems their software engineers are faster than their HTML guys. I can tell you though that the update is real as I have connected via my Wifi and I am installing it right now.

Oh yes, av-Watch says it can: "In addition, it expands also the animated picture specification which can be played back. With Main Profile of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, it reached the point where it can play back also the animated picture of the 720×480/352×480/480×272 dot."

Finnly, another update, haven't had any downloads for ages, and they have listened and expaned the video size YAY! and anyone know why the yourpsp store doesn't work, its says on my PC that there is a server error or something? anyone help?
spir @ Mar 28th 2007 7:57AM
It takes some time before the official site has it (a week or two like the other updates).
But again, nothing much in this update.

If you are looking for a good program to do videos for your PSP/PS3, you can't beat MediaFork. With more options than you can shake a stick at and a price that cannot be beaten (free), it should be on every PSP/PS3 owners HDD, both OSX and Windows. Cheers! Oops, need to give a link hee hee...

The added resolutions hint at a Remote Play upgrade. Maybe the PSP will finally be able to playback DVDs inserted in the PS3. As for native resolution, expect only videos you'll purchase in the PSN to play (such is life in the days of DRM)...
Ryan @ Mar 28th 2007 11:30AM
For video conversion: xvid4psp by winnydows. Do yourself a favour and check out this free program. Also has good PS3 presets and custom settings such as "ghostbuster" which helps deal with ghosting on PSP. Good program, I use it all the time with XP, no problems.
farfisa @ Mar 28th 2007 11:39AM
@Stef: I use OS X and didn't have any luck with Streamclip either (though it's a great program for converting video files otherwise). I found this one that was made to create 480 x 272 files for use with for the open firmware hack (and it works for me on OE3.03C), but it could work with the new official firmware too:
http://dl.qj.net/PSP-Video-Converter-for-Mac-OS-X-General-Apps-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/12465/catid/151
It's an ffmpeg front-end that only converts to 480 x 272.
Once I got it working on my PSP, I actually had to tell it to go full screen, but that was the only hitch.

Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 12:01PM
Yeah, looks like the official word is that the videos have to be encoded in with AVC main profile, which, to the best of my knowledge, requires some VERY expensive licensing.
Sam K @ Mar 28th 2007 1:04PM
Playing videos at full resolution does work. Someone posted a couple of sample videos on another forum (here's one of them: http://klemen.verdnik.googlepages.com/Me_in_Vienna.mp4 ), and they work great.
James @ Mar 28th 2007 12:49PM
Hah! I had totally forgotten that full-res video playback was a hack. I've been running OE for so long now, I thought that was one of the 3.0X features that got rolled in. Man, yet again the hackers are ahead of the manufacturer on this one...
Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 1:16PM
...Yeah.... and that's an AVC encoded with the "main" profile. Either that's a commercial video, or the person who made it shelled out some serious cash.
navsimpson @ Mar 28th 2007 7:43PM
It'd be nice to get some official confirmation of *why* these video upgrades were made. I can't help but feel it's to get things ready for a movie download service.
Still, I gotta' wonder - wouldn't a full-length AVC at 720x480 be like a gig and a half? Or is it bitrate that will affect size more?
Johnny Lasley @ Mar 28th 2007 6:40PM
Still not much of an update. I want my Playstation Store now.
mayakovsky @ Mar 28th 2007 10:11PM
I saw somewhere that there was a feature for a "Wireless Hotspot Network". What does it do?
navsimpson @ Mar 28th 2007 10:37PM
Wireless hotspot lists "T-Mobile USA" (even though I'm in Canada and it's no good to me). I'm guessing this is an extension of the deal they had with T-Mobile for the Mylo where you got free Wifi for a year or some such goodness.
Smokeydabest @ Apr 2nd 2007 10:47PM
it seems like they haven't replaced the new update (lol)
TwoLOUD @ Mar 29th 2007 9:07PM
Updated without problems. Thanks.
walexy @ May 24th 2007 6:27AM
