Insomniac explains why PS3 will win
This comes from Insomniac's community page, but it was neatly transcribed on GameDaily.biz -- we're going to use that one as our foundation. Deja vu... wonder if I've used that exact sentence before. It's plausible, but not probable. Anyway, Brian Hastings, the chief creative officer at Insomniac, wrote a post about Sony's negative spin and ultimately why the console would come out on top. We'll list his reasons with some light support. Don't forget, he said, "First of all, let me make it clear that Insomniac is a 100% independent development studio. Sony has neither endorsed nor authorized what I'm writing here." Right.- HOME and LittleBigPlanet -- a multiverse and user-generated content. We've heard enough about this and we know it's awesome.
- Free Online -- we've heard the argument over and over. He uses the XBL argument across a five-year span, totalling an extra $270. Ouchies.
- 50GB Games -- this is actually a hotly contested point. Is Blu-ray necessary? Games can look like Gears of War on regular DVDs, right? He goes through the "well, it's only got X amount of levels" versus something like Resistance which has over 30. Blu-ray will be necessary and in a year or two, it will show. We at PS3Fanboy also believe this.
- Casino Royale -- Yeah, the Blu-ray movie. Why? It proves Blu-ray isn't a niche market. It cracked the top 10 DVD movie charts on Amazon. For the HD version, that is, for the Blu-ray. A nice moment for the BD camp.
- HDMI -- it matters. Why else would other companies re-release their consoles supporting HDMI after saying something along the lines of "it doesn't really matter". Apparently it does.
- Standard HDD -- not only that it's standard, but very, very, very easily replaced.
- The Wii fad will fade -- we won't go into this one, but it makes sense. It's like a fashion trend that will show its age in a short year or two. Check out his reasoning, as we'll step back from this controversy.
- PS3 has major CPU advantage -- he admits the GPU may lean in the 360's favor, but the CPU/Cell processor will completely wipe out any doubt about the system's power once someone takes advantage of it.
- PS2 still outselling 360 -- it's outselling the PS3, too. But if they're just now buying the PS2, chances are they won't buy either the 360 or PS3 for a while and when they do, they'll lean towards the PS3 because of all of Sony's fantastic 1st-party titles, among others.
- Something for Everyone
Whew. What do you guys think? We'll shut up now and leave the discussion to you.

From history, superior hardware has never "won" a console battle on its own, so the PS3 would have to buck that trend for most of this top 10 list to matter. Or get a serious price drop coupled with a whole mess of really good exclusives.
What are these fantastic 1st party titles, pray tell?
Also, I don't think counting on Wii to fade is a good strategy, even though it might happen.
rfom @ Mar 28th 2007 11:25AM
"Sony has neither endorsed nor authorized what I'm writing here"
OF course he would be influenced by strong Sony links.
BUT I can bet we will have a ton of comments about "liar, he is a Sony mouthpiece"
ALL to obscure the fact that most of what he says makes sense.
I begin to feel - All that "PS3 expensive" and "Sony lies" rubbish - its a MS orchestrated tactic to airbrush the massive issues in the 360.
Thats how four MASSIVE faults in 360 are totally brushed under the carpet
- high defects
- high cost of upgrade (if you have a Core, pray you never feel like upgrading: USD180 for a 120GB hard disc? USD100 for wifi?)
- Abysymal backward compat
- Paid multiplayer (no matter how good Live is)

well as a year-long xbox 360 owner, and a victim of the red lights, i must say the ps3 is looking VERY good right now. basically i'm just biding my time until some really good games hit the shelves (already have oblivion). i've never been a fanboy, owned both previous gen consoles, but with the way MS handled this gen i will no longer buy any MS products. apple and sony for me from now on.

Yeah, a whole lotta sony strokin goin on! He may be biased, but as others have pointed out, M$ ain't really doing anything to stop sony from running a train on their ass. Oh wait they did do something.. they released a black unit with HDMI for totally "real" HD... It's like you're annoying little brother trying to look and be like you...

I got a question since I don't own a 360. How does the HD-DVD add-on connect to the 360? Is the connection loss-less for both video and audio?
blamecanada @ Mar 28th 2007 11:40AM
Personally I don't have any reason to give what he says credit. I can make a list too, except just the opposite:
Reasons the PS3 will fail
Losing many exclusives
More difficult to develop for
A year behind the competition
Much too expensive for the mainstream
Inferior online experience
CELL not particularly well designed for gaming
As Blu Ray player prices drop, the feature will become increasingly less valuable.
Sony's attempts at social networking in games won't catch on
PS Store isn't as comprehensive as XBLM
Also may I not that I am not endorsed by any company to write these words.

Talk about asking for it...
There's no fun to be had on PSN. I wouldn't pay for it if they did charge, and not because I couldn't afford it. It has no choice but to be free. If home is all it's cracked up to be, which I'm highly doubtful of, then maybe it will be worth the time of day. I can't name one month I've ever regretted paying for Xbox Live.
50GB = more levels? That's why Resistance took so long to get it over with. If they start forcing extra levels in there, then the space will be more negative than positive. They should have spent more time on making the gameplay better than putting more monotonous levels in there. If you've played Gears, every level is handled differently, keeping it fresh. Even though the game is too short, it's still a great experience. Creative minds make games, not storage space.
HDMI only matters for the PS3. The 360 looks just fine over component, as does the Wii, and they never look blurry unlike the PS3 over component. It's just a false consumer conception that a quality picture requires HDMI. The movie studios are forcing HDCP compliancy to get their little DRM dreams to come true. It's the same as the misconceptions that iPods are the best MP3 players, or that Plasma televisions provide the best picture.
Why do you think they charge so much for cables in retail stores and get away with it? They are trying to imply that it's the best way to go, so it costs more. Same with the iPods and Plasmas.
Think about it this way. Until the last couple of years, we've been using analog VGA. Was there ever a complaint about picture quality? Not that I know of. The day I have co-workers demanding DVI because VGA isn't crisp is the day I'll start considering the importance of DVI/HDMI.
The standard HDD is the best feature of the PS3. Now we just need a reason to put something on it. I was going to upgrade it, but then I realized it was pointless....I wouldn't use the space. I don't use the 13GB on the Xbox 360 either. Or the 40GB on my PS2, or even the 6GB on my Xboxes.
The Wii can very much fade; that will all be up to software. If they cannot pull repeats of Wii Sports success...then they are already doomed. However, the Wii is bringing in new gamers. The PS3 and Xbox 360 fail to do that at a high rate. While us "hardcore" gamers may lose interest in the Wii, that won't stop the "gaming noobs" from enjoying it well into the future. I can't even get my mom to play solitaire on the computer...but she'll play Wii Sports. That means a lot.
It's things like this that leave me unconvinced of the PS3's future:
http://suicideninja.blogspot.com/2007/03/ps3-futility-chronicles-changing-login.html
"If this is the next generation of convenience, then consumers are going to stop gaming. But hey, at least the WHOLE process was done in 1080p!"
rfom @ Mar 28th 2007 12:11PM
"Losing many exclusives"
The PS brand had far greater exclusives to begin with...End-2008, in terms of "good" exclusives both are at par. And dont forget, if you are a fan of FF, MGS or DMC, you need a PS3 to play earlier gen games
"More difficult to develop for"
Conversely, given the "PC-like" nature of 360, you will have PC-like games. What I want from a console are genres I dont have on the PC - Like Motorstorm/Lair/heavenly.
"A year behind the competition"
Which would be a factor - if MS brought out a decent console to begin with. The 10 million lead will be a huge burden once those missing technolgies become important ( especially adequate hard disc OR BR - As the article pointed out, because of those 2-3 million core users, the 360 cant use a hard drive - brilliant)
"Much too expensive for the mainstream"
Lets hope the mainstream that bought 360 doesnt need a bigger hard disc, HD player or wifi anytime soon - they might feel a bit unhappy about their final cost
"Inferior online experience"
This is incredible, given your earlier point. Because the "cheaper" 360 has ZERO online experience to begin with (if you dont have multiplayer - what do you do? voice chat? download demos?)
"CELL not particularly well designed for gaming"
If you say so. (The 25-30 titles out till date dont seem to suggest that)
"As Blu Ray player prices drop, the feature will become increasingly less valuable."
Incredible logic. getting a USD700 player for USD100 is not a positive - but if the gap drops, its a negative. brilliant.
"Sony's attempts at social networking in games won't catch on"
If you say so
"PS Store isn't as comprehensive as XBLM"
If you say so
andy @ Mar 28th 2007 12:21PM
why do people keep saying the XBOX 360 is pc like?
Its not!
Its a powerpc based processor just like the PS3 or older Macintosh.
They are both the same architecture.

@12: What's this bull about component video looking blurry on the PS3? That's ridiculous. There's no difference between the component output qualities of the three systems (except of course the Wii only does 480p). Don't fault Sony for taking steps to future-proof their system with a superior connection method. Clearly they were on to something, as Microsoft just confirmed.
OrganicShadow @ Mar 28th 2007 12:28PM

-600,000 Europeans since thursday don't seem to think it's too expensive. Nor did the 175,000 FIRST DAY buyers, which I believe crushed Wii and 360.
-If you actually listen to publishers and developers it seems that all systems will be losing exclusives. 360 will lose it's share of games as well.
-Actually it's ahead of the competition, seeing as the non-handicapped 360 is FINALLY releasing soon.
-Online experience will continue to evolve, and will do so faster than M$ will ever CONSIDER dropping Live fees. Seeing as how they are currently trying to RAPE free PC online gaming with Live it seems highly unlikely.
-As Blu-Ray prices drop so will the PS3, and so will it's value grow. You've got it ass backwards.
-CELL actually WAS designed for such tasks, and seems to be receiving more and more praise from developers on it's power. Notice how the shift has moved from GPU to CPU advantages in PS3 vs. 360 discussions much?
-PS Store will continue to evolve just as the PSN will.
-If you're a fortune teller and know the fate of Home, then why didn't you just use that excuse for your other reasons? Why even state what's going on NOW if you know the future?
haywood jablomey @ Mar 28th 2007 12:34PM
Anybody can attempt to justify it any way they want, it doesn't mean it'll happen.
Sony calls Americans cheap. Screw them. Their piece of crap PS3 is WAY overpriced for a game console, which it is not.
PS3 is a waste of money, plain and simple.
Kagari @ Mar 28th 2007 12:41PM
The PS3 is getting some awesome games this year alone! I have 10 preordered right now and will probably add on another 5 or so. There's only currently 3 Xbox 360 games I own and don't want anything else... as for the 360 having a bigger user base... yes it was out a year early, but so was the Dream Cast and look what happened to that.
Stef Geiger @ Mar 28th 2007 12:48PM
Sony didn't call Americans cheap. They said that our market, in comparison to the EU, is cheap - and it is. We earn more and pay less.
Otsego_Undead @ Mar 28th 2007 1:32PM
I think alot of people are discounting the PS2 sales.. those PS2 sales WILL lead into PS3 sales.... cos they'll want to play all those PS2 games they already own on their next gen system.
Joop @ Mar 28th 2007 2:11PM
Point #7 is a HUGE if, though. People said the very same thing about video games in general back in the day, and it's a billion dollar industry now. You can throw tech specs around all you want, but calling something a fad when it conintues to sell out going on 6 months after release with zero signs of slowing down has moved past the armchair analysis stage and into absurdly naive territory. The main issue with the PS3 beating the Wii is that it all hinges on the hope that the PS3 will finally pull it together combined with the hope that the Wii's current onslaught will eventually run out of steam. That's a whole lot of counterintuitive hope to be riding on.
Also, point 1...seriously? Home will probably end up being something, but the user generated content is pretty restrictive. It's a fancy pre-game lobby, which is certainly nice, but that's it. Imagine a gimped Second Life minus the corporate sponsorship (or even worse, with it). And calling the Wii a fad while at the same time playing up Little Big World is downright hilarious. If anything is fleeting, it's gamer's love affairs with physics tech demo games.
Naaiif @ Mar 28th 2007 2:36PM
Ps3 has great hardware, but poor software at the moment. Xbox 360 has problematic and some last gen hardware, but it has great software.
But the thing is software can be easily updated and added to, hardware cannot without catering to the original buyers.
Sony's approach may not seem like a good decision to some people now, (Ps2's decision to have a DVD player in it didnt seem like a great idea at first either - when Dreamcast was steaming ahead due to its one year lead) but it will work out in the long run, that is the beauty of having future proof hardware. Where as software can always be updated over the years.
N0M4D @ Mar 28th 2007 3:04PM
Fyi, I am a 360 fanboy
Let’s put things into perspective: this developer has been making games on Sony platforms since the original PlayStation. I’m sure he’s passionate about the system(s) and that’s a great thing – better games will undoubtedly come from this. However, one should keep this in mind and put his statements into perspective.
1 – I'll definitely agree Little Big Planet looks good; Home will have to prove itself though, and I'm just not sure…;
2 – Xbox Live does have an associated cost, but on the other hand what does the consumer get? A stable, standardized online platform which supports every game that comes out in way or another. Case in point, in multiplatform releases thus far it has not been uncommon for the Xbox360 game to have online functionality and the PS3 version not;
3 – The validity of BluRay for games is yet another point that will have to prove itself. Insomniac *would* make a case of ResistanceVSGears… I for one don’t mind having a game on a couple DVDs. As for BluRay as a movie format, I personally think this might be even pointless since it’s already possible to download HD movies directly. I can understand this may not be the most attractive thing for everyone, but it fits me just fine.
4 – Meh. See previous point.
5 – This is one feature I always thought Microsoft should’ve included in their machine from the get-go. It’s absence wasn’t a deal-breaker, but still…
6 – Again, the standard HDD is a good thing, and Microsoft should have stuck with it. Again, a not-so-great choice.
7 – The Wii will sell bucketloads because of its wide appeal: still, I believe it should coexist fairly peacefully with any of the other systems;
8 – Now this is a point of some controversy. It’s pretty much consensual that 360’s GPU has a bit of an advantage and some extra features that the RSX (PS3) lacks. As far as CPUs go, we’ve heard it all. Sony touted its Cell as the be-all, end-all of silicon wizardry… Microsoft retorted with some intricate number crunching that seemed to indicate the gap wasn’t quite so wide (apparently, Sony took some liberties with their calculations and the values yielded were somewhat misleading). After both machines finally arrived at developers, everyone and their mother was stating that the two were equal, with the exception that one might be a little bit better at AI (360) and the other have a slight advantage at physics (PS3). Both are sub-optimal solutions, though.
9 – Is this a valid point, even? I do own a 360, and owned a Xbox (regular one) before that. Most of the old games I have are backwards compatible on the 360 – the only times I loaded them up was to really see if they worked like they were supposed to. My case being that I bought a next-gen system to play next-gen games. On that note, I don’t think the lack of backcompat on the Euro PS3 will harm sales *that much* either.
Delive @ Mar 28th 2007 3:07PM
Connection rate is what will doom the Wii. I work with about 20 people, 10 of which showed interest in or purchased a Wii. Of the buyers (3) they played a week and not again since, Of the ones thinking about it, they might buy 2 games a year because they are not gamers and would not have time for gaming. You can run down and get 1, or you can walk down and get them all.
By the way, there is a neew Beer from Germany for the casual gamer like your Grndma and your kid sister called Wiisenstock!
Joop @ Mar 28th 2007 3:44PM
@24
Current Wii connection rates are higher than PS3's, and quite a bit higher than the 360's for the same time period after launch. Anecdotal evidence means nothing, especially when flying in the face of unignorable statistics, so your point is the same thing I was talking about earlier: hoping the PS3 gets better and hoping the Wii gets worse. If you're going to pin the demise of a console to a specific statistic, at least pin it to one it's not currently leading in.
@22
Good point, but no technology is futureproof, least of all one that uses a specific, unproven, media format.
Allen @ Mar 30th 2007 12:36AM
Those are very good points, and boast the PS3's strong points. Drop the price and PS3 could catch up to 360 in no time.
Xiru @ Mar 28th 2007 7:26PM
Reasons the PS3 will fail
Losing many exclusives - they've lost DMC4... and maybe Ace Combat, this is not "many".
More difficult to develop for - this is a lie according to Tecmo.
A year behind the competition - Dreamcast...
Much too expensive for the mainstream- Ipod is $300
Inferior online experience- Opinion, I prefer the PS3 online, not as confusing as XBL
CELL not particularly well designed for gaming- says who?
As Blu Ray player prices drop, the feature will become increasingly less valuable. -PS3 will drop too
Sony's attempts at social networking in games won't catch on- opinion
PS Store isn't as comprehensive as XBLM - its free
I added a rebuttal to your comments. I think they are just as valid as your opinions but only time will tell.
massive_98 @ Mar 28th 2007 7:35PM
I own a 360 and the only argument that really makes sense is free online. I hate paying 60$ a year. Its just not worth it.
Jason @ Mar 28th 2007 7:43PM
another reason why the ps3 will fail...
there's higher support for the ps2 than the ps3...
since the release of the ps3, i've seen more commercials for games coming out on the ps2 than for the "360 killer"....
MS at least has the gameplan right by backing the 360 more than the Xbox...Sony apparently thinks they can survive by trying to split their resources between two products...
in all reality....the competition isn't between 360/Wii/PS3....
it's between the 360/Wii/PS3/PS2...
and frankly...PS2 > PS3...

Broadside @ Mar 28th 2007 9:50PM
well I own a 360 and really enjoy it, but I used to have a PS2 and it was great. I think PS3 is going to win this battle, they shot themselves in the feet a few times, the killer games need to arrive...and they will...and most of the MASSIVE existing PS2 user base will have an inherent bias to purchasing another Sony system. XBox360 has a nice headstart but this is only the beginning of the race, they have sold 10 million units? well that is just scratching the surface, there is a massive untapped market for both MS and Sony and I think Sony will have the edge because their console is more future proofed and has better good will from the casual gamer, which they will more readily tap when the price drops (not talking hard core gamers who frequent these sites). As an aside I think Blu Ray will win also, so Sony's stupid strategy if tacking it on and adding to the cost for gamers will eventually look like genius. We'll see. Good to see more competition this generation, it's good for all of us.

Oh my goodness, what an ego this guy has! Comparing insomniacs Resistance to Gears of War is just a travesty. "It has more levels." Yes, but more than half the time I was playing resistance, I was wishing it had less; it was just too straight forward an FPS for me which made it boring. Gears looked better and Gears played WAY better as I felt gears was a MUCH more engaging experience with its cover and reload systems, and it felt like something new, not just run and shoot. And not to mention overall better level design.
stockstar1138 @ Mar 28th 2007 11:52PM
@34 GoW took over a year into the 360s life cycle to come out and lets face it, it pretty much maxed the power of the 360. Lets see whats out next year at this time for the PS3, guarenteed its a lot better than GoW. You forgot to add the fact that GoW maxes at 8 people online 1/5 of what Resistance can do. The only way 360 fanboys can get their rocks off is comparing a launch title to a title that maxes out the specs of their amazing 360. I think you guys are going to have a lot of shit to eat in a few years, but by then your 360 will have the same specs as the PS3. That is by the fifth time M$ has dicked over their fanbase with probably a fifth SKU. Hey who knows you guys might get blu-ray as an add on by then.

next time read the whole article not just the parts that anger the xbox fanboy in you. if u would read the whole thing then u would see that he doesnt come off as arrogant or having an ego at all.
On another note, he clearly said that gears was a better game but mostly cause of the graphics, they used texture streaming in gears which allowed the developers to make it look better than it would normally look with the available ram, the reason resistance didnt look as good is because that technique wasnt available yet for the ps3.this technique also is what caused gears to have so few levels as texture streaming requires alot of disc space.
I own both systems and both games, and i play gears quite a alot so i know that it is more engaging than most other shooters out there, but i would much rather play a very good game that is long than an "arguably" great game that is too short. but of course that is MY opinion. but if anything is a "travesty" its comparing two completely different kinds of shooters..

"From history, superior hardware has never "won" a console battle on its own, so the PS3 would have to buck that trend for most of this top 10 list to matter."
I'm pretty sure the SNES ended up beating the Genesis, right? I doubt anyone will claim the SNES wasn't superior hardware.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ Mar 31st 2007 5:18AM
And yet again, everyone on IGN (aka those of us with decent brain power) laughs at something the PS3 Fanboy crowd looks at as great points. I'm not joking about the laughing. Go watch their latest podcast. There's even a panel of people discussing how god-awful this list actually is.
1. He says Top 10, and then crams two things into one spot. Regardless, there's a little thing called XNA. Not only does it give you vastly more tools, but you're not confined to a specific game. Furthermore, XNA games can be put up on the Live Arcade. Talk about giving people their chance to shine.
2. You get what you pay for. Leave it at that.
3. There's no disputing that Blu-ray holds more. That being said, by the time developers can take a real advantage of the format, this generation will be coming to a close.
4. The PS3 is helping the Blu-ray format a lot more than the format helps it.
5. Raise your hand if HDMI makes or breaks a console purchase. I'll let you figure that one out on your own (although it should be obvious).
6. I'll give them that.
7. His reasoning on the Wii "fad" is probably the worst part of this list. He says that no one will go to Wii parties...because everyone will own one. How does this help?
8. Just because you have a CPU advantage doesn't mean you'll win. And just like the Blu-ray format, by the time developers are able to take full advantage of this, the generation will be ending.
9. His theory is that PS2 owners will eventually buy the PS3. If that was the case, the PS3 wouldn't be hurting. PS2 sales may be topping the 360, but it's completely crushing the PS3. Good ol' canibalism.
10. A guy on IGN's podcast made a great point. Their library of games may evenly range from E to M, but most of the games that are out, no one gives a shit about.
These PR moves are just like the hardware they're attached to. No one is buying what they're selling.
Mr Khan @ Mar 31st 2007 4:50PM
@ Chris
then by your logic, Neo Geo should've beat the hell out of both of them
If the best hardware won every generation
Atari 7800 would've beaten NES
Neo Geo would've crushed Super NES
Saturn would've beaten PlayStation
Xbox would'nt have been outsold 4.5 to 1 by PS2
As for this whole article, i think it comes kind of naturally to expect a Sony-owned Developer to lend facts to support their cosnole, this argument would be more credible if it was, say, a dude from EA or Konami saying this (If 1st party confidence was all that mattered, N64 and GC would've crushed the competition in their days)
scott @ Apr 3rd 2007 12:55AM
It's pretty ironic how sony fanboys are.
Do you know why ps2 sold so many systems and continues to? Because of it's software library. That is what makes a machine sell, not it's hardware specs. You guys all loved your ps2s, even though the xbox was technologically superior.
Now that ps3 came out, all you can do is claim that your system is the best because it's all about specs? Specs specs specs, thats why you'll win? Not how it's happened in the past?
You really think the ps3 adoption rate will be so high from ps2 players? Personally, I don't. Almost all my friends have 360, and none of them play or even mentioned wanting to play original xbox games on it. We did buy a next gen systems, there's very few games that warrant going back and playing. I hope you ps3 players are enjoying your guitar hero by the way :). Don't forget the adapter was cancelled :)
Also, like others have said, this entire article is stupid since it's coming from Insomniac.
It's like an article on why the 360 is better coming out of bungie, it's extremely biased.
