Sony offers up a $100 PS3 price cut!
The fine folks at Sony have a nice promotion going on that could make buying a PS3 a little bit easier on the old pocketbook...Sign up for (and use) your new Sony credit card and you'll get a $100 credit applied to your card after your purchase. Of course, this credit can be applied to any gear you might want, but the PS3 is clearly begging for this. It makes the PS3 "Elite" a steal at $499 bucks!
Take that Xbox 360 Elite. You'll also get:
- 0% Introductory APR and No Annual Fee
- Full Platinum Visa benefits
- 5 Sony Rewards Points per $1 spent at SonyStyle.com, Sony Style stores, and ImageStation.com
- Exclusive members-only deals on Sony products
[Thanks Colin]

Can I buy an Xbox360 Elite with my Sony card? Wocka wocka wocka... I mean, if I've got a credit line, what the hell? And can I get a Wii with that thing while I'm at it? I wonder what the cap is on that thing... $1000. I could squeeze in a PS3 and an Xbox360, or a ps3, a Wii, and some games or an extra controller or two...
Oh, the possibilities.
If that thing had a $4000 credit line, I could get all three consoles with all the cables and even subscribe to that Xbox thing, I could get a game for each, and a HD tv...
Who cares if I'm paying 22%? Who cares if I decide to keep my 100,000+ mile car? Gaming heaven!
Question: spend $4,000 on all three new consoles plus a high-def tv and some audio, or... GET A NEW CAR?
Oh, wait, I know:
With $4,000 I could probably still squeeze in about $300 for a new bicycle, in case my car breaks down (and then, there's always the bus).
The choice is obvious!

Hey, I didn't post that at 10:32! It's 7:32 here!

John...unless you can get those Xboxs or Wiis at the Sony Style store then...no.
LR @ Mar 28th 2007 11:04PM
According to Sony's website, this offer expired Jan 31, 2007, but you had until March 31st 2007 to make your first purchase via that offer.
The credit to your account occurs 3-4 months later if you account is in good standing.
The APR rate on this card is 14.24% or 18.24% or 23.24 variable, depending on your credit standing. Yikes!
LR @ Mar 28th 2007 11:07PM
Oh wait, they changed the terms...
You have until March 31st 2007 to sign up for the card (about 4 days) and you have to make a purchase by August 2007 to qualify.
Colin @ Mar 28th 2007 11:12PM
@LR...
From the site:
1 Offer subject to credit approval. Card credit will be applied to your Sony Card account 8-12 weeks after your first purchase. Offer expires May 31, 2007. First purchase must be made by August 31,2007.

Ok guys, come on. I'm a Playstation fan too, but seriously, let the Elite thing go. Just relax.

Does the PS3 Elite come with a 120GB HDD?

Simon @ Mar 29th 2007 10:40AM
You really shouldn't advertise this as a PS3 price cut... I bet most people'll use it to get themselves a Wii at 50% the price.
Mike @ Mar 29th 2007 10:58AM
So..... stooping to credit card ads eh? Slow news day? 360 elite gotcha feeling blue? I hope you're at least getting commission for this post.
Mike @ Mar 29th 2007 11:54AM
oh damn, I gotta change the link here, thanks for reminding me.
Long story short, that used to be a legitimate site until godaddy sold my domain name from under me to a spammer. Don't click my name, don't go to whatthegeek. it's garbage. Sorry for leaving that as my link, and as soon as I figure out where to change it on here it won't be there anymore. Thanks for pointing it out DC

Hi Mike...I'm Colin...I submitted the story to PS3 Fanboy and received no commission (I don't live in the States and I don't work for MBNA or Sony, in fact, I work for a competitor to MBNA).
I submitted the story because someone looking to find out more about a PS3 MIGHT stumble onto PS3 Fanboy...as a service to them I thought it would be nice to let everyone know how to score $100 off the price of it. (I also submitted to PSP Fanboy - you can get the PSP +1GB + Game + Movie for $150 with this deal).
Have an awesome day and stop being so cynical.
Colin @ Mar 29th 2007 12:02PM
You'll notice that I posted the info 1 full day before PSP Fanboy decided to bring it to everyone's attention:

SuicideNinja @ Mar 29th 2007 12:46PM
Wow...the comments on this article are ridiculous.
360 fans...just be quiet about the Elite. You know these guys are just going say, "But we get Blu-ray!" Yeah, Blu-ray. Sarcastic "woot".
http://suicideninja.blogspot.com/2007/01/its-official-dont-waste-your-money-on.html
I got a $50 gift card from Walmart and 1 year no interest on a 360 I bought. I didn't need it anymore since my room mate brought his upsairs and we didn't need 3 of them. Walmart let me return 360 two months after the purchase. And I got to keep the $50 gift card. That's a deal...making money. LOL
For my PS3, I got rid of one of my 3 useless PS2's I collected over the years to save $100. Then $500 went down the toilet. At least I paid cash...no interest.
*sigh*.
Mike @ Mar 29th 2007 12:59PM
It wasn't intended so much as a potshot as criticism - although you're right - it did come off more like a low blow.
The headline "Sony offers up a $100 PS3 price cut!" followed by a post that reads like an ad for the Sony card is lacking in journalistic credibility IMHO. I'm not trying to suggest that you shouldn't have written about it or anything like that - it's a good deal (if you have the credit score to get the good apr at least) and it's good to fill people in on deals like that - hell, cheapyD has made a career of it. Just watch the wording on headlines like that - when I saw it in my aggregator, I almost spit coffee on my monitor.
It's a shame about whatthegeek, and I'm glad to hear you liked it. It was picking up steam, and I had brought on a few new writers when this all went down. I'll be launching a new site in the next few weeks w/ a whole new layout that'll be focused more tightly on gaming.... it just sucks to have lost all the work (and the traffic associated with it) that went into wtg. Learn from my mistakes - don't trust godaddy to execute a domain transfer for you.
seedaripper @ Mar 29th 2007 3:04PM
er....fuck it...anybody who buys the premium 360 has to be a fool when dissin the PS3 on price...?
yes...go out an buy the same console twice(elite?)...cause its beefier
....mate....give up on micro$oft!!!!
Mike @ Mar 29th 2007 4:53PM
Heh, yea, mostly I was trying to poke fun at the fact that you brought the elite up at all in the post. I should avoid fun poking when I'm running on little sleep.
Here's the thing: you're right, I do like my 360. I'll also enjoy the hell out of my PS3 when I get one, but for entirely different reasons. Same goes for the Wii. The fact of the matter is that in this console cycle, all three companies have taken unique approaches to their hardware. Ninty put all their chips on an innovative controller, and a low price point. MS bet the farm on Xbox Live, and the concept of "choice", as in "I choose not to get the HD DVD drive - I get my Hi Def on through video marketplace". Sony took the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach, which has resulted in a higher price point, but incredible bang for your buck.
The point I'm getting at is this: comparisons between the three next gen consoles are useless. Everybody has a unique strategy, and they're all valid for their own reasons. I'm tired of fanboys on both sides of the fence slinging mud (yup, I'm aware I'm saying that on a site w/ "fanboy" in the title) because at the end of the day what it's going to come down to is games, plain and simple. Xbots need to stop playing the "we were here first" card - that didn't save my beloved Dreamcast in the long run. Sony fanboys need to stop playing the muscle card - the original Xbox had more raw horsepower than the PS2, but Sony still dominated the last cycle.
Furthermore, all three consoles are going to succeed. While the PS2 did outsell the Xbox, Microsoft still considered it a financial success, or else there wouldn't be a 360 to discuss today. Currently the Wii is outshining the 360 and the PS3 as far as sales are concerned, and with such a strong start, it's possible that Nintendo will outperform the competition in terms of long term sales.
All of that aside, do any of you really want to live in a world where there is just one console? It's competition that drives innovation, and that means that with three strong consoles in the market, the winners of the console war are the gamers.
Mike @ Mar 29th 2007 4:58PM
As far as that contest is concerned, I will be carrying it over to the new site. The new name is Check Your HUD, and checkyourhud.com is currently up - it just displays a broken version of wtg. We need to do a LOT of work to get things in order, but it will be worth it. All of the wtg articles and content will still exist at checkyourhud.com, so any hints I may have dropped (and there were a couple) about what my all time favorite game was will still be there for people to see.
hey alex @ Mar 29th 2007 7:21PM
This is the stupidest, most pointless article to ever grace PS3fanboy. You hawking credit cards now? What's next, service contracts?
Way to stoop to a new level of low.
