Low install base to blame for no Eidos titles?
Eidos is, of course, referring to itself in the subject line. See, most of their PS3 titles aren't planned for release until 2008. That sucks. Why? They blame the low install base of the new console. Eidos may have new Tomb Raider, Hitman, and a possible Just Cause sequel in the works for the mid-2008 fiscal period.Eidos CEO Jane Cavanagh made these comments: "We believe that PlayStation 3 will be a successful platform, and are developing technology and products for this console...However, as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date."
To me, this says that Eidos doesn't have much faith in its games. They don't think they'll sell well, or they don't think they'll be nearly enough to move systems. Granted, they shouldn't think too highly of themselves, but no game developer should be complacent enough to make games that are "just okay". They need to work on something that will move systems! Something every dev should strive for! Revolution! ...Or, you know, get pumped up and stuff.

I think there is only one that I have heard of. Kane and Lynch: Dead Men? I believe. Looks like it could be funny, and pretty twisted as well.

Do you think evolution studios will make a sequel to motorstorm, but with totally different vehicles?
I mean instead of offroad cars, how bout boats?
Even the name still works.(boats have motors)

Eido is right not to release their games on PS3. As a PS3 owner I wouldn't care less about their games anyway. Eido you can dump all your 3rd class PC ports to 360. Even Lara Croft's boobs can't save you from your failure, that's how hard your games suck.
scott @ Mar 31st 2007 8:44PM
Haha. Nice responses from the ps3 crowd. If tomb raider was going to be a ps3 exclusive, you'd see nothing but gloating from them, and taunting the 360 fanboys. But since they aren't getting it at all, they just shrug it off and say the games are garbage anyway. Classic! Even if they don't make omgamazing games, tomb raider and hitman do sell fairly well, and it's just more and more games going to 360 that will hurt ps3.
silence @ Mar 31st 2007 9:01PM
I agree that if this deal went Sonys way all the fanboys would be singing another tune. Eidos does not have the best games out there but this will still cause some pains for Sony. I do recall PS3 Fanboy talking about Kane and Lynch though... so some of you fanboys might not like what Eidos is doing. You should have bought a 360 when it came out and bought a PS3 later this year or early next year. That's what I'm doing and I glad that I did do it. By time the PS3 has some good games I can jusify buying another console because it will have been a couple years since the 360 purchase. Best of both world fools! Not writing petitions to boycott dev's. That shit is weak and will do nothing for future 3rd party exclusives.
snyper831 @ Mar 31st 2007 9:41PM
To me eidos is right on waiting till 2008 because it simply aint profitable for any company releasing games on the ps3 as of right now with such a low installed base unless more than 50 percent of ps3 owners buy your game wich would be nearly imposible with one exception (resistance). every one knows how expensive it is to develop next gen games specially for ps3 thats why you havent see a AAA game been released on the ps3 and the few that have been ok have been from sony.
So regardless if eidos games are good or not, one thing is clear you wont see developers releasing their AAA games on the ps3 anytime soon unless they come from sony but expect more and more 360 exclusives and once ps3 exclusives heading over to the 360.
mccomber @ Mar 31st 2007 10:08PM
It's been pointed out that looking at Eidos former release cycles, their big franchise games (Tomb Raider and Hitman) probably wouldn't even hit until then anyway. Hitman I could take or leave, but the last Tomb Raider was actually pretty good, and I'd miss that if it didn't come to the ps3 as well, and also continued on the upward swing of Legend.
From what I've seen of Kane & Lynch, it looks interesting, but I think it's trying to pull of the same mechanics as Army of Two, which to me looks better in a lot of ways. Eidos isn't huge, but no Sony releases, and this announcement of such, does hurt the image of the ps3 for sure.
Killer @ Mar 31st 2007 10:37PM
@ mccomber
I know this is my opinion:
Eidos > EA
Even though Eidos does make alot of graphically horrible ports. EA sucks at what they do now, because they're completely all about MONEY.
Also, Kane & Lynch was put in development before Army of Two. So really its Army of Two that is copying Kane & Lynch. Besides, Stupid military guys shooting people or Insane, drug addict guys kill and murdering people. I think Insane sounds more fun. That's my opinion though.
mccomber @ Mar 31st 2007 11:18PM
@Killer
The way I worded what I was saying wasn't how I meant it to sound; I wasn't implying that K&L was copying Ao2 (yahoo acronyms!), just that they both seemed to have the same idea in mind.
From what I've seen, and I'll admit I've followed Ao2 closer since it is coming to the ps3, I personally think it looks better. I love the cheesy dialogue and whole atmosphere they have going for it; it reminds me of True Lies style in some ways, and of course the old Lethal Weapon and other buddy/action movies. It also seems like the whole two people team idea is pushed more from what I've read. I wouldn't argue about K&L coming to the ps3 though, and when I pick up a 360 in the future, I'll probably look into that title because it does look good, and it's made by the same team as Hitman so there is a chance it will be a pretty decent title.
I do agree about EA sucking in a big way, but I hope that they are big enough to hire talent, but able to let that talent do it's thing. Also, I have to say, I'm glad it's Eidos and not EA that made this announcement—not because I don't want to play Eidos games, but because EA does make some of the biggest sellers for either system, and if they decided not to back the ps3 that would be a major hit.

"GO Wii60!"
Yeah! Wii60 is THE best for the gamers!
We'll get an endless stream of generic FPS titles, an occasional driving game (360) and a bunch of shitty PS2/PSP ports with craptacular graphics and unplayable controls!!! Oh, and a "new" Mario game once in two years!
Yeah, Wii60 FTW!!11!
Eric @ Apr 1st 2007 7:33AM
WTF? Your arguement doesn't work on any level. Eidos makes MULTI-PLATFORM games. It is not their job, or intent, to move systems, just units of THEIR games. Why waste the money to port over games to the PS3 which they will they have to try to charge full price for (to cover the cost of the conversion) when not enough people will buy them because A: They are already available cheaper (and probably better) on the 360 and B: There simply aren't enough PS3s to bother with. After the bath EA took at launch by betting on the PS3 and against the Wii, developers are in no rush to port to the PS3. Be happy you get as many multi-platform games as you do. All it says is that Eidos has no faith in the PS3, at least not at this time, it says NOTHING about the faith they have in their games. No amount of BS fanboy spin can change that. I have a PS3, and I like it, but Nick Doerr is full of horse shit, or an idiot, depending on whether he actually believes that last paragraph or not.
Tim Goodchild @ Apr 1st 2007 8:14AM
Erm, just want to point out that you imply that the financial year is the same as the calendar year...not so. 1st Arpil 2007 - the 1st day of FY08...so mid-fiscal 2008 would be from 1st October 2007 onwards...the same time as a lot of games are due out on PS3. If Eidos are saying mid-2008 calendar year, then that woukd be different!
mccomber @ Apr 1st 2007 11:48AM
@eric, I would argue with you that by saying a company has no faith in their games, it states that they don't think it's good enough to sell a million copies without having a huge install base. Resistance has sold over a million with the current "paltry" number of ps3 owners, because it's a great game. Ps3 owners have already shown that they can and will support a developer who makes a good game for our system. I agree that it's a safer bet to release multi-platform, or to the larger install base. But saying it's not worth it because of the lower number of consoles out there just shows exactly what Nick, and also Yosuke Hayashi, the director for Ninja Gaiden Sigma, said is true. "I think developers who use the hardware sales numbers as an excuse, it's because they don't really have faith in their product. They want to wait until the hardware has enough units... because they know that their software can't stand on it's own." When you have other developers saying that... I guess you'd just say he's full of shit or an idiot as well, right?
The reason EA got hosed was because they released a bunch of inferior ports for the ps3 as quickly as they could. Who wants to buy a half-assed version of another system's games?
Mr Khan @ Apr 1st 2007 12:59PM
Uhh, duh?
Its basically the same reason Eidos declared it was ditching GameCube from 2003 to 2006...
low install base and poor software sales (although its a bit too soon to call on that, this Christmas will tell the tale as to how this generation will end up)
Captain Obvious: Away! (runs around like Freakazoid, holding arms out and going "fwissssh")
