Issues playing Dragon's Lair on Blu-ray?
Here's a shout out to see if anyone else out there is having issues with the newly remastered Dragon's Lair classic for Blu-ray players as well as the PS3. Here's what someone said they were dealing with: "I put it into a Philips Blu-ray player and it didn't work at all. I put it into the Sony PlayStation 3 and it worked fine, but without any sound. Somebody smart tells me its a Java problem. Anyone know?" Somebody smart, eh? Hmm.Well, with the recent talks about tightening the requirements for Blu-ray players, our guess is that this guy's got an older model with, possibly, lower specs than other BD Players out there. Why there was no sound on the PS3 is anyone's guess. Maybe he didn't change the audio cable settings. Anyone else thinking along those lines, or having similar problems that'll debunk our conclusion?

I thought I saw the street date for this title changed to 4/17?

The audio works just fine on the PS3. The thing that does not work so well on the PS3 is the menu backgrounds of the Features menu. They flash in and then go black. Menu items are still there, just with a black background.
Otherwise it works on the PS3.
Digital Leisure told me this when I contacted them on the issue:
"The game was coded to the BD-J spec, however, some players have certain difficulties handling the code. The PS3 does not hold the image as you mentioned and does dip to black, however on the Panasonic and Samsung players this screen hold perfectly. We hope the future PS3 firmware updates will correct this problem."

"Java sucks."
Ahahaha.
Yeah sure.
It’s an interesting thought though, that as movie playing hardware and software gets more complex, it may get to see the same interoperability problems as say, web browsers do. Let’s hope that the BD-players manufactured from now on will not have too many of those.

"Somebody smart tells me its a Java problem."
If so, that wouldn't surprise me. Java sucks. Sounds like an update should fix it though.
Can they really screw up Dragon's Lair? That doesn't seem possible.

I didn't experience any problems with the sound on the PS3 release. The menu issue mentioned was there, but I was able to play through the game fine. I had a chance to interview David Foster, who worked on the the BD-J. He did mention it was tricky to publish in BD-J with little support. They are actually holding back on the HD DVD release until issues with that firmware get sorted. a new firmware for BD-J is going to be out soon as well. I just got the Dragon’s Lair Blu Ray, and while the overall quality of the gameplay and video / audio mastering is outstanding, the problem I’ve encountered with in in a PS3 (updated with the current firmware as of April 29th 07) is that there is NO way to get the limited lives feature to work. Once you get down to ONE life, it switches over to the UNLIMITED lives gameplay and no matter how much you die, you never see the crumbling skeleton of Dirk and the “Game Over” screen.
Anybody else have this issue with the Dragons Lair Blu Ray and a PS3??? Email me! Lupin003@aol.com
(I’ve emailed Digital Leisure, and they responded that they’ve alerted development to this issue.)
