Our good friends at gamevideos.com have unleashed a pair of uber-cool videos of Lair in action. This is the closest look we've seen yet of the game's actual gameplay elements. Verdict? This thing looks great!
With a SIXAXIS in hand, this may be the PS3's next killer app.

What do you mean by NEXT killer app? The PS3 doesn't have one yet and this certainly isn't one.

just so everybody knows this is only the alpha build. go check out the article on ign. and might i add that we aren't watching it in 1080p. Final product is going to kick ass.

im sorry how long did it take to beat gears of war. 6 hours. we are talking 32x32 km maps in lair. thats over 1000 squared kilometer. huge.

As for gears well... God of War 2 is less glitchy better looking and more fun.

i'm waiting for a killer app.
Lair looks gorgeous...
but the combat on the ground looks horribly boring
and the sky combat at times dragged on.
but it looks great and there's still time to make it play great.

Beautiful! This will be the next ps3 game I purchase. I love how people are saying it looks bad even though its a horrible quality video. Just wait till you see the game in HD on your PS3. This looks like it was taken with a webcam lol. Anyway, this is a killer app if i've ever seen one.

How about some intellectual honesty here? Even if you don't think Lair is going to be a 5 star game, at least give credit where credit is due. Console brands aside, this is one of the more interesting action games I've seen on the next-gen consoles.
It's not perfect, I don't think anyone has said that. I would personally prefer less machine-gun type fire breathing, and a richer color palette. This game looks like a pretty solid 8/10 at this point.

as for halo looking crap ..them pics are from the alpha build----- Still halo is a killer app.....just as FF13,MGS4 are to the Ps3 .....still one thing there not 1st party! killer app for me has got to be a 1st party/only on one system game

I am an xbox fanboy but i am not here to tell you lair SUXXORZ.
Lair looks ok it certainly doesnt look like it will appear to the masses im getting a ps3 and this game look like a rent flying a dragon sounds cool im sure but after 2 hours of flying a dragon lets get real.
As for Halo 3 graphics suck its in alpha and so is this game so dont judge the graphics of either yet im sure lair will look toop notch and halo 3 will be there to kick its ass (my fanboy remark =)).

Gotta love it, the game hasn't even been played by anyone outside of a select few, and already we have people claiming the gameplay sucks. Truth is, we have what should be an ORIGINAL gaming experience here. Panzer knockoff? Yeah, I remember the first two of those games, loved em too. I'd be happy if that was where they were looking to for inspiration, but if you'd actually looked at this game at all you'd know that it goes WELL beyond anything we ever saw there. Only common element is a person riding a dragon. In that case, Gears is a Castle Wolfenstein knockoff and nothing more. It's some guy running around with a gun, right?
All we can do is look at the videos (and do yourself a favor and find some hires versions) and comment on how it looks, and the elements we see. So far, it looks pretty damn good, and most of all looks like a hell of a lot of fun. It may not be a system seller, but between this and all the other titles on their way, the ps3 is definitely going to have a solid library in the near future.

Wow. I had assumed this game was going to be like that ps2 dragon game, only in hi-def.
The dragon models are amazing, the fluid movement, the look of the flesh. The huge dragon bosses remind me of that old arcade Sega game... Space Harrier, these huge worm-like structures moving around the entire screen.
Also notice when that serpent rises from the water, there is a huge amount of water particles trailing off it. I've never seen videogames do this, the sense of immersion and attention to detail is notable.
The backgrounds look nice, with good fog effects, and the water is so gorgeous I think I'll probably have some crashes at first wondering how they did it.
My only complaint is the inconsistent framerate. I don't care if it's as low as 24 fps (that's all film is) as long as it's LOCKED. Any change in framerate immediately brings the user's attention to programming issues, and breaks the immersion. You can see this especially in the first video when the dragon is fighting minions on the ground. I hope they make the framerate steady throughout. You can also see some pause on scrolling, when the background moves quickly.
Oops, didn't know it was an alpha build, assumed beta. If this is an alpha build, this game is gonna kick ass, and anyone seeing this in a store display or at a friend's house or whatever is going to be impressed, because of all the liquid physical movement of the beasts. No other game is displaying biological creatures at this level, and it WILL turn heads. Just fix the framerate-- even some non-gamers are going to notice this, and it will be categorized more in a game/niche/hobby realm rather than a film/whoa/that's interesting realm.

Of course the post above me is a different John. I'm the original john and still say this game is a sleeper.... not sleeper hit.
Looks like starfox, panzer dragoon, drakan, all wrapped up into a boring overhyped dull fest. I don't care about the graphics so much as the gameplay. You can be the most beautiful game in the world... but if you play like this game does in those videos... that's pretty shallow.
Halo 3 on the other hand is going to have longevity just like Halo 2 still does. Is Lair a system seller... hell no!! Factor 5 has a history of great graphics in their games with little replay value. The only reason people bought the rouge squadron series was because of the star wars license. Otherwise... they got old REAL FAST!
I don't care if this is an alpha build or not. The gameplay looks boring and linear. Just like a Michael Bay movie... it's a special effects carrier with no substance. Have fun with this title. I'll pass as will many others.

Umm, nice of yourself to make yourself known OTHER JOHN. I'm the original John and nothing has changed.. this game still looks boring. Halo 3 is a game that will be fun for YEARS to come...just like Halo 2 is still getting played online. This game will get old in about 2 hours. NEXT!!!!!

i think my opinion of lair just went down. i like how the waves are actually 3d and not some effect mapping like practically every other game out there. i don't like how the flame breath is either rapid firing lame fireballs, or a low texture sprite for the actual constant flames. i want the dragon breath to look like it did in that first trailer, where it actualy looked like a flame thrower.
