Introducing the PS360 controller! I want one!

As I've mentioned on a couple of occasions, I'm not a huge fan of the SIXAXIS controller. Sure, it's attractive and it's functional... but, it's lacking in a couple of important areas. First, it is a bit on the light side. Second, it is not as "ergonomic" as it could be. And, third, I prefer the off-axis thumb-stick layout much better. Yeah, all of this is completely subjective... but the bottom-line is that I prefer the Xbox 360 controller to the new SIXAXIS (not that the X360 control doesn't have it's own issues).
Well, it appears that some PS3 owners agree that the SIXAXIS is not perfect and are paying big bucks to freelance uber-modders to balance both form and function to create the world's first PS360 contoller. It's got the classic candy shell of a 360, but the caramel-filled center of a PS3. I might have to order up a couple of this bad-boys. I would only make one modification: paint the whole thing piano gloss black. Awesome. Here's the step-by-step creation of the controller. And here's a clip of the thing in action:

wtf @ those random shots of that nerd and the folding@home project.
I think this is fake
Justin @ Apr 15th 2007 11:01AM
okay...well not fake but i don't even know what to think. if its just a ps3 controller inside a 360 controller case, all that improves would be the supposed ergonomics...it still wouldn't support the rumble function. or would it?
also, its the usb connection that throws the genuine factor off.
humpty @ Apr 15th 2007 11:06AM
Was that a joke.. someone took the time to cut those scenes together? Anyways, that video doesnt prove anything. And, he's using composite cables (!), wtf, hes got bigger issues than the sixaxis.
massive_98 @ Apr 15th 2007 11:54AM
That person really gets into their gaming.
dancingtosirens @ Apr 15th 2007 12:20PM
Of course its not fake guys.
Thats Ben Heck. If he can make a 360 and a Wi into a laptop, I think he can turn a 360 controller into a PS3 controller
Taylor B @ Apr 15th 2007 1:11PM
Am I alone in saying that I don't like having the off-center joystiq? I like the Playstation controller for being so symmetrical.
Tom @ Apr 15th 2007 1:29PM
The only thing wrong with the X360 controller is the d-pad. It's too soft, not clicky enough. Other than that it is the perfect controller, the best controller that has ever existed. Before that the best was the Gamecube controller, and before that the Dreamcast controller. The Playstation controllers have always been crap. By the way, I own a PS2 and play tons of games on it all the time, so I'm not just flaming; those controllers seriously suck.
Will @ Apr 15th 2007 1:51PM
Tom: i think you need to stop smoking...the gamecube controller was horrible, i mean not even close to being the best controller ever...the only generation of consoles that it would've been better than was back in the days of NES and atari. the dual shock was and still is the best controller...the perfect weight and size and it's symmetrical, not to mention the buttons have the perfect feel
Xiru @ Apr 15th 2007 2:18PM
Best Controllers ever = Neo-Geo, SNES, Xbox 360. Dreamcast was nice also but bad for fighting games. This is a nice mod and I'm trying to find out how much he charges to do the mod. I want a black 360 controller so bad.
Dreadhead541 @ Apr 15th 2007 2:30PM
i like the playstation controller

"The only thing wrong with the X360 controller is the d-pad"
And the shoulder buttons, they are too thin, put too much pressure on your fingers, and hurt to use for extended periods of time. (You get "Crazy Taxi" finger)
And lets not forget the shape sucks. Where the wings join up with the body, should've been thinner.
Oh, and the charge connector should've been USB.
The thing collects dirt like a mofo.
"Before that the best was the Gamecube controller, and before that the Dreamcast controller"
Both of those were horrible.
Cube had nothing good about it.
The buttom shoulder buttons had a lip at the top which hampered use of the Z button.
There should've been a Z button on the left side.
The dpad was horribly small.
The top of the analog stick sucks. N64 style groves? Did they not learn from the "Mario Party" blisters? Where is the click-in? (L3/R3) And why does the c-stick suck so much. At the very least it should've been the same as the other stick.
Where is select?
The bean buttons sucked hard, even Wii went back to the diamond formation (classic controller)
The only things Cube got right was the start button, and the B button.
Dreamcasts controller was garbage. No dual analog. It invented "Crazy Taxi" finger with it's horrible triggers. The shape made you angle your wrists painfully. The start button is too far out of the way. Where is select? The dpad is garbage.
The only things they got right was the VMU slot, second slot, and the diamond buttons.
SIXAXIS is the best controller I've ever used.
Though it too has a mistake. Rumble, obviously. Where is it?
I love that it uses USB. I love the new triggers (no "Crazy Taxi" finger) I love how clicky all the buttons are. The dpad is the best this gen.

That video was funny. But I LIKE the new ps3 controller. I like how light it is, it's like there's nothing in my hands, I'm in the game.
That said, I do appreciate the superior plastics of the 360 controller. But many people have pointed out, it's digital buttons can be painful.
I haven't experienced this with the ps3 controller.
My main complaint with ps3 controller would be L2 and R2, they need something under them to rest your finger on.
Motorstorm uses R2 just fine, since the only other button I have to push is X for boost. So I can use my index finger on R2.
But God Forbid I have to press R2 with my middle finger, and access R1. It's just painful. I imagine a flange, below R2, so that my middle finger has something hard to press against, instead of nothing, while I'm working that button.
John @ Apr 15th 2007 2:53PM
@Tom, the gamecube controller? That thing hurt my hands, and it felt so cheap. The playstation controller felt better to me. The original xbox controller was goofy and large, but the 360's controller, from a Playstation fan, felt really good. I still prefer the playstation controller, but I have no problems with the 360 controller. Great materials, great feel.
Charl3z523 @ Apr 15th 2007 3:15PM
That guy scares me.
andyscout @ Apr 15th 2007 7:03PM
I've always liked the Playstation's controllers, since the PS1. I'm glad it hasn't changed much. I think its just about the right size, the buttons are well laid-out and it just works well.
The original XBox controller was horrible. I'm a small person, so I've got small hands, meaning the thing was just too big for me. The redesigned, smaller ones are better, but they still feel a bit big to me.
The gamecube's analog stick sucked ass. Especially after the rubber part on top fell off. Then, not only was it hard to control (like before) but it cut into your finger while you played.
The Wii controller is also a bit annoying, in my opinion. I'm sitting there, playing Zelda and my hands are out in front of me and I feel like I should be doing something with them. Using a typical controller feels natural to me, but the Wii feels a bit unatural. But I do like the nunchuck, its pretty nicely set up.

Extinction, you are an idiot.
"SIXAXIS is the best controller I've ever used"
your quote here proves it.
You were dissapointed when the boomeraing was dropped.
The Ps3 controller is one of the most dissapointing things about this gen. (among many others)
Hoffer @ Apr 15th 2007 5:11PM
Put the sixaxis d-pad on that controller and it would be perfect.
bearattack79 @ Apr 19th 2007 2:34PM
Hoffer is honest.
AL7AIR @ Apr 15th 2007 5:42PM
Perfect controller crossover imho:
- Symmetry: Playstation
- D-Pad: Playstation
- Sticks: Xbox360 (PS has good sticks too, but I like the indentation on the top)
- Upper shoulder buttons: Playstation
- Lower triggers: Xbox360 with the "end zone buttons" of the Gamecube pad
- Ergonomics: Xbox360
- Charging: via USB and therefore getting rid of the bulky battery bay
SKI @ Apr 15th 2007 6:07PM
Saturn has the hands-down best traditional controller ever.
KiraXD @ Apr 15th 2007 6:23PM
id like to see the sixaxis modded into a 360 controller. (D-Pad is such a piece of crap for the 360 controller) not sure you could stuff the 360 controller into the sixaxis though... its huge.
Tom @ Apr 15th 2007 6:58PM
When I praised the Gamecube and Dreamcast controllers I was comparing them to the competition at the time of their release. So for all the faults each controller had judged by itself, I say they were the best because:
Dreamcast vs. N64 vs. PS1: Dreamcast wins by having the LEAST number of faults.
Gamecube vs. Xbox1 vs. PS2: Gamecube wins, again fewer faults.
It's all subjective of course, but the GC controller fits my hands perfectly. I still find it more comfortable than the 360 controller, but the C-stick is unforgivably craptacular. Still the best FOR ITS TIME though.
Jak @ Apr 15th 2007 7:27PM
I'd just like to point out that the sixaxis controller will eventually have vibration included. Sony and Immersion have settled their lawsuit.
According to this site, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immersion_v._Sony
Sony and Immersion have agreed to "explore the inclusion of Immersion technology in PlayStation format products."
alex @ Apr 15th 2007 8:28PM
I honestly think that the 64 controller is the best ever! I cant believe no one else has said it. It rarely made my hands sore and the only faults i can see is that it lacks a second stick and the bulky add ons for rumble/memory. I mean come on its pretty much a combination of a gun and a controller ( shame it didn't work as a gun/pointer).
But the dualshock was great if less comfy ergo wise but i gotta agree i love the symmetry plus the pressure sensitive buttons and l3/r3.
Gamecube controller felt nice but after a few hours of zelda the index fingers PAIN.
BTW the link for the step by step just gives me error 403 forbidden when i try to use it.
mccomber @ Apr 15th 2007 8:35PM
I'm another person that likes the playstation style of controller. One of my favorite things about the sixaxis is the light weight, I hated that about the otherwise perfect Logitech wireless for the ps2. Guess I've never been one for the "heavy = expensive" mindset.
I'll admit that I've never used a 360 pad for extended periods though, so it may very well be that much better; I've just never had a problem with the dualshock or sixaxis. I figure that considering how many people flipped about the boomerang and cried "keep the dualshock, if it ain't broke don't fix it!" it can't be that bad... hell, look at how many knockoffs on the general shape were produced for PCs as well.
Ghost @ Apr 16th 2007 2:58AM
I bet the 360 dpad is so lame and soft because when Microsoft got into the game business, and they thought of the controller. all the good dpad designs were already patented so they had to go with a generic circle type.
Just a guess. :/
WTangoFoxtrot @ Apr 16th 2007 10:36AM
the best of both worlds eh :)
keep up the good work !
Wonderflex @ Apr 16th 2007 12:41PM
@Tom
I actually agree with you in saying that the Gamecube is one of the best controlers - even by todays controler standards. I honestly thought it was going to suck with the lima bean buttons and what not, but they proved not to be an issue at all for me.
And as for the comment against the c-stick, it works great. Ever played Smash Bros.? Quick smash attacks work amazingly well.
bootsielon @ Apr 16th 2007 3:14PM
Ed Stasick, you should go back to writting on Xbox 360 fanboy, but just exclusively.
Hasn't anyone realized that he usually writes something Xbox 360 related on PS3 fanboy? It's no wonder he was writting for Xbox 360 fanboy. This is PS3 related of course, but oddly enough he always writes something about 360 (unlike Nick). I don't want a half assed PS3 fanboy website filled with xbox 360 fanboys writting for it; that's what Joystiq and perhaps Xbox 360 fanboy are for. Nick Doerr and Dan Choi are much better for PS3 fanboy than Ed.
Ed, go buy a new 360, or pay 130 bucks to get it fixed, since you seem to love writting 360 related stuff.
