Firmware 1.70 is available for your downloadationism
We're not sure if you can really engage in downloadationism, but without the downloadation, there is no -ism to -ation and there cannot, nay, shall not, be any PS3 firmware version 1.70 for you. You may be wondering what has changed in this surprise update -- we were, too. Luckily one of our tipsters saved us the research and let us know directly.- You can now download the PlayStation software from the PS-Store and play them directly on the PS3, if you don't have a PSP.
- You can use saved data for the PlayStation software on the PSP (so, saves from the PS3 transfer over to the PSP?)
- You can use the vibration function of accessories that are for use with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software.
This addresses two very big issues many people have had with the PlayStation Network and the PS3 as a whole -- downloading the PS-Classics and being able to play them on the PS3 and utilizing that old school vibration. So, if you've got a USB connector for the Dual Shock 2, let us know if it works. Because I'm too poor to go get a USB connector and would probably not be able to find one.
[Thanks, sullyj!]

"You can now download the PlayStation software from the PS-Store and play them directly on the PS3, if you don't have a PSP."
Apparently you still need to have a PSP hooked-up to your PS3 in-order to download PSOne games, so non-PSP owners don't have the luxury of playing PSOne games on the PS3 without a PSP yet. Hopefully this can be changed with a future firmware update, so all PS3 owners can play these games with or without a PSP.

The fw updates now include a short blurb on whats new, before you do the install.

I'm not surprised that Sony didn't trumpet this, like many of the minor things it updates regularly. It's not like they have a full time PR whore like Major Nelson to gush about every 25 yr old arcade game that gets released on XBLA. I have a few original XBLA titles, but seriously, stop releasing the old games that really show their age after a few minutes of play.
Kevin @ Apr 19th 2007 1:57AM
@5
apparently you're wrong.
3 is right.
I just updated my ps3 and then purchased MediEvil.
then when i tried to download it, i was told to connect my psp.
WTF!!!
:[
i'm pissed
Extinction @ Apr 19th 2007 2:37AM
The store is being updated tomorrow to let you download PS1 titles without a PSP connected
danchico @ Apr 22nd 2007 2:17AM
Can some1 with a usb->ps2 controller adapter check if the update fixes any GH controller issues?
I am praying for the update that it will work with.

This is a PS3 site, why are you going off on a rant about 360? And bashing them? Nobody even mentioned 360 in the thread, and you start with your fanboy attitude? PR Whore? Because he's got a PR job? His job is to communicate with Microsoft and customers. Don't see why you're flaming him for doing his job, all he does is interviews and regular updates to his webpage. I'd love to see Sony implement something like him, so we had a clue what was coming and what was going on, isntead of having to read news sites to find out what's been updated.

Skating games are all garbage... What kills me most, however, is that everyone keeps saying this is EA's 1st venture into the genre and it's not. They did Street Sk8ter back on the PS1 and it wasn't that bad of a game... easily more enjoyable than Tonhy Hawk games.
Beano @ Apr 19th 2007 3:52AM
And when will it be possible for EURO PS3/PSP owners to download PSone titles from the PlayStation Store?
andy @ Apr 19th 2007 4:11AM
Yeah Beano,
What about us frogs?
XDamage @ Apr 19th 2007 5:06AM
Ok, now we Europeans just need to be able to buy and download the PSOne games in the first place... And where the crap is Mortal Kombat II?! US gets MKII, and EU gets Sudoku... Maybe after they've fired the top executives etc, they can get someone who can work with the EU PS Store, it's so irritating to always be a few months behind all the time!
IanC @ Apr 19th 2007 5:21AM
I just hopew this fixes the game stopping bug when you play Kingdom Hearts 2 on a PAL PS3
cheese @ Apr 19th 2007 7:01AM
@#14,Scott, Major Nelson is a ‘Xbox Live Director of Programming’, and I can bring up the 360 if I damn well like to, because he takes every opportunity to bash the PS3 and the PS3 community with smartass postings and innuendo.
KJ @ Apr 19th 2007 7:34AM
@ 16, 17, 18 : Indeed. Where are our PS1 games?
@ cheese: Justifying stuff with "someone else did it too!" is forever childish.
Colin @ Apr 19th 2007 8:07AM
From what I understand the games will start to work (without the PSP) as of April 26th... Ass backward way of doing things but...it is SONY.
Beano @ Apr 19th 2007 8:36AM

ThreeSpeech?
Personally, I'm pretty sick of Major Nelson and his one-sided and uninformed Xbox 360 PR. I'd rather read news stories and articles which have a fair chance of being objective.

Little update on the PAL PS3 front - this update has added mroe games to the BC list. Not sure what ones exactly (since they havent updated the FAQ), but Naruo Ultimate Ninja, Dirge of Cerberus and Warhammer 40000 Firewarrior work, and they didnt before.
Nate @ Apr 19th 2007 1:11PM
Lets get some comfirmation on weather the usb connected dual shock 2 rumbles with this. I'd love to send my ps2 packing
Alistair @ Apr 19th 2007 1:49PM
Has anyone tried the guitar hero 2 controllers....finally gives me the chance to use the 100$ discount(trade Ps2 and 2 games) from EB games so i can get the ps3
Paul @ Jun 4th 2007 10:05PM
The usb-connected Dual Shock 2 does rumble with this new 1.70 firmware, as I noted here:

I have a Kiky X-Series PS2 to USB adapter (http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=193) and was able to test this update out today.
Note that when you boot a PS2 game you no longer have to "press the PS button" to get the game started, although you are still prompted to.
I verified that my old dual shock controller works and my Guitar Hero guitar works.
However, while my Dual shock does work when playing PS2 games, I'm not getting any vibration coming through.
Kiteless @ Apr 19th 2007 2:14PM
Hey and now I can play You Tube videos in the browser! Anybody else have this problem is 1.6 and now works in 1.7?

@ 27 Billservo : Cool thanks for checking guitar hero 2 out...the only reason i kept my ps2 was for this game...quick question, is there any probs with the game like graphics and so on?

106.8MB
Aaron @ Apr 20th 2007 3:58PM
Updated last night, and GoW2 rumble worked, sweet!!!
But I would like to know if GH and GH2 will work now...
Billservo @ Apr 21st 2007 11:35AM
@ 33 Aaron : What brand PS2 to USB adapter did you use? I also tried GoW and could not get rumble to come through...
Billservo @ Apr 21st 2007 11:38AM
@ 28 Alistair : I did not notice any graphical issues but then I tried it on a standard def set. At any rate I don't think there were any updates related to graphics in 1.70.
wiyot @ Apr 21st 2007 6:01PM
Guitar Hero worked for me with the USB adaptor from Radio Shack. The Whammy Bar does not appear to be working correctly howerver
Alistair @ Apr 23rd 2007 8:00PM
Quick question does the xbox360 controller work on ps3 since its usb?
Wonko @ Apr 28th 2007 8:01PM
This may not be the best place to post this but...
I can't browse PS3Fanboy on my PS3! I can access all other websites but engadget sites do not seem to work.
Oh the tragic irony! Is this a deliberate thing?
