Firmware 3.40 now available on Network Update

As predicted, PSP firmware 3.40 is now available via Network Update. The latest update to Sony's handheld includes the following features:

Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
The method of managing certificates under [Game] has been changed.

Certainly not one of the more exciting updates in recent memory. Coincidentally, the PLAYSTATION 3 has also been updated today. The PS3 can now supposedly play downloaded PS1 titles, and by using the two systems in tandem, one can play a game on PS3, save, and then continue playing that title on the go. Unfortunately, as of this writing, we've been unable to make this work.

To download the latest update, run Network Update on your PSP.

Well, this update is only worthwhile if you have a ps3, which I don't*sigh*, so...yay for ps3 owners.

Why would they release the update for network only?

I dont have wireless

Has anyone been able to encode full screen videos from Firmware 3.30?? I know PSP video9 works on a PC, but what about a mac? That update would be more useful than this new one.

no big deal, ill just update. ill ask a friend if he can lend me his memory card,he has wireless internet, and update wit that. Or do i really need 3.40, dont have a ps3? hmmm. dont know, should i?

The same page lists the updates. Note that there's nothing new in 3.40 for non-PS3 users that isn't already there in 3.30. You might as well wait until something useful happens, like Sony gives us all $600 coupons to buy a PS3.

thats cool, 600$ coupon, but last week a clicked sumthing that said i won a free ps3, 1 wit boomerang controler, and i click it. gave em my email, my info and today i got a 60 gig PS3!!!??!!! dont know y? but yes i got one!!!!!!!!!!! gonna go 2 ps3 fanboy now. :)!

@4: Yes I have, and it looks gorgeous.

Unfortunately, though, I've been creating these video files with ffmpeg via custom command line switches. (I also built ffmpeg from scratch from the latest source code, but that isn't necessary to get the video modes to work.)

I'm not near that computer, but I can post a sample command line later tonight, if people are interested.

As for the user-friendly front end programs for ffmpeg, I did create a profile for 3GP Converter. I would assume other programs will update their profiles shortly, if not already. The video format is just another h.264 variation, like the specific iPod and PSP formats.
