Why don't those PlayStation games work on my PS3?
Sony answered the above question after a problem arose with the 1.70 firmware update. See, the update allowed you to download PS-One titles and play them directly from your PS3 instead of generally needing the PSP, but something was wrong. The downloaded games wouldn't work. Oops. Sony answers why that is as we pull out our hair in aggravation. It seems for the games to play on the PSP, it has to have the ROM itself and a certification key -- the PS3 doesn't need a certification key to play the games, so there's no reason for it. It needs to be removed. Sony is on the case right now and will have everything cleared up "sometime in May". If you downloaded anything, don't worry -- you won't have to pay for the games again. Kind of annoying, but hey. Sony should have thought about that being an issue. Now we have to wait to get our Crash Bandicoot on.

Boooo!! But at least they are fixing it, and May is just a few weeks.

Maybe if they released a PS1 game worth playing this would matter.

That sounds weird, if the PS3 only needs the Rom itself, whats stopping us from mass piracy of PS1 games?

Ya know, i just wish that they would have just waited till the ROM problem was solved before releasing this funtionality. Because now the process looks half-assed and it's another thing for the game media and gamers to harp on and continue trashing the machine. I mean does no one over at Sony realize what these mistakes do to their image? Is no one testing out these updates to see if something is missing? It's just fustrating for me, as an owner of the console and fan of the brand, to continuously see the mishandeling of this system and the lack of response or concern by the company to remedy the problem...because it really is a problem.

Hmmmm, did they not test this function at least ONCE before they put it out? One instance would have told them something was wrong. Weird.

What are you talking about? There are a ton of awesome games on the PSone. So now are you going to ignore the entire success that Sony had in the past just because they aren't doing so well right not? That's just wrong. I for one am happy that they are doing this and hope that the PS3 will allow faster loading times like the PS2 did.
Draco @ Apr 20th 2007 1:20PM
I think the problem lies not in the fuctionality of the patch, but the wording of their upgrade text.
they say
-now you can play your downloaded PS1 games on the PS3
instead of saying
-now you can play downloaded PS1 games that are marked PSP/PS3

#9, I'm not sure I follow. So right now I can play any PS1 game marked "PS1/PS3"? But if it is only marked "PS1" it can't be played till a new patch?

@Vincent060
Have you looked on the PSN to see what PS1 games are offered??? Have you been itchin' to play JetMOTO or Cool Boarders lately? I haven't. Of course there are great games for PS1, but Sony isn't releasing good ones on the network, just crappy ones. This is probably due to the fact that Sony would have to pay royalties in order to do that. Still, it's annoying.
Draco @ Apr 20th 2007 4:16PM
right now on the playstation store the PS1 games are marked with (PSP) (not sure the exact wording, but it clearly says PSP)
if Sony told us to wait for the games to say (PS3/PSP) then there would have been no problem. my guess is there is a hardware PS3 department and software Emulation department that just arent completely in synch.
