Japanese Hardware Sales: Apr. 9 - 15
Another week of hardware sales in Japan, another week of dismal PlayStation 3 news. While we're not opposed to admitting mistakes, seeing an expensive console like the PS3 have a dip in sales isn't entirely surprising, especially in Japan where the idea of having a large, HDTV in a small living space is pretty... well... it'll take some convincing. We're setting you up for disaster, here. Without further ado, here are the numbers you love to hate:- DS Lite: 133,325
- Wii: 75,759
- PSP: 24,850
- PS2: 12,872
- PS3: 11,948
- Xbox 360: 2,900
- GBA SP: 654
- Game Boy Micro: 617
- Gamecube: 167
- DS Phat: 146
- GBA: 26
Every Sony product experienced a significant dip into the red, that is, every Sony product decreased in sales in Japan. Sure, this goes against what was reported in the NPD report for March, but this is April. And there aren't any games for the Japanese market to get excited for. Something's gotta give. Something!

As much as I hate Sony consoles, I almost feel bad for them. But then I remember how big of arrogant assholes they were/are, and I go back to hating them!

This stuff is depressing. I'm optimistic about what'll happen to NA sales once big exclusives like Lair etc drop.
lenny0487 @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:30AM
first off, why r u on the PS3 fanboy site then, trolls now these days jeez, anyway, i dont find it surpirsing that the PS3 isnt selling well over there, why, cause theres no games that can influence the Japanese over there, we will probably start seeing changes by the time games like Ninja Gaiden comes out.
seedaripper @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:30AM
@scott 'f' off...
and at least its selling more than the 360 ;)
the PSP and PS2 are still selling well for christ sake??!!! so what if the bloody kiddy DS and Wii(cheaper as well) are selling more??!! (boredom will soon set in) as i said they are CHEAPER...frigging economics for fucks sake *roll*

Something's gotta give. Something!
Dude: You ok.
I know what has to give.
A Price Drop.
I make good money and I just cant see me paying $640. Including tax for a system. I could care less about the Blu Ray Player. I had two 360's and sold both of them. It runs to hot for me. I might look at the Elite since it supposedly runs cooler.
I really tried to talk myself into a PS3 but I'm looking at $700 after I buy 1 game. DAM.
Dolla Dolla @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:31AM
This software drought is devastating the PS3 in Japan. The summer doesn't look much better. HD gaming FTL in the Land of the Rising Sun!
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:45AM
sure it's selling more then then 360 in japan, by like 10-11k. I'll take that over the 60-70k difference 360 is outselling 360 in north america!
12,000 ps3's sold in their HOME COUNTRY, 6 months after launch? That is AWFUL. Microsoft wants to get into Japan, but they know they're fighting an uphill battle. Sony banked on Japan being one of their major selling spots, since the ps2 did so well.
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:46AM
err first paragraph edit:
60-70k difference 360 is outselling ps3 in north America!*
Jesse @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:52AM
Nick, you do realize that week-on-week sales in March were far worse for the PS3 than February. Feb is a 4 week NPD period and March is a 5 week NPD period.
The trend for PS3 sales has been consistent: sales have dropped almost every week in almost every region in which it has been released.
stockstar1138 @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:57AM
i just want to know how many people in japan have held off purchases but plan to buy once titles like FFXIII hit.
Jesse @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:55AM
Regarding NPD numbers:
It's also worth noting that the PSP, despite doing poorly in Japan and not very well in Europe, had traditionally outsold the DS in the states. This is no longer the case, even after the PSP price drop.
Sony needs a lot more than just price drops to start selling these things. It has already been shown that $500 ain't gonna sell the PS3. Sales continue to slide on the device like there is no tomorrow.
Jesse @ Apr 23rd 2007 12:07PM
"i just want to know how many people in japan have held off purchases but plan to buy once titles like FFXIII hit."
It can't be very many because FF sales in Japan are approximately 3 million for the biggest releases. Many of these people will already have PS3s. Many of them will get their FF 13 flavor from the DS-lite.
To put it in perspective, about 15% of PS2 owners purchased Final Fantasy X. That's a pretty good attach rate, but it doesn't suggest that the one game will equate to success in Japan or anywhere else.
To be blunt, GTA4 is a much bigger system-seller than Final Fantasy ever was.
kingofwale @ Apr 23rd 2007 12:30PM
PS3 is closing in PS3's number, it might surpass it next month. so that itself is a good sign (because those who bought a PS2, is unlikely to buy a PS3 in the near future)
@1. did you look at 360's number? xbox continues to fail in Japan, and in the home of their owners due to red rings. ;)
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 12:38PM
@13..yea I did look at 360's numbers for north america
I believe it was
360-199k
ps3-130k
Hardly call that failing. 360 is a year and a half old, ps3 is 6 months old, and still getting its ass kicked! Gogo ps3!
kingofwale @ Apr 23rd 2007 12:46PM
ahhh, but you are once again forgetting that the world doesn't evolve only around you and NA.
how about Europe and Assuie? 910,000 PS3 vs 132,000 xbox.
hardly 'ass kicked' right? ;)
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 12:54PM
How about that was a 5 month delayed launch in a major area? Of course it's going to sell well.
How about the numbers after the first week in europe, last I saw they had dropped like 80%
Tere @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:00PM
3. hey seedaripper. Way to be a stereotypical Sony Fanboy. You managed to do this by dissing other systems to make up for your weakening dear Sony.
Listen:
-The DS and Wii are cheap, so. Its not like they were made to be affordable on accident. They are also not kiddy, they're FUN, REVOLUTIONARY, a break from the norm. which is why people like them...ask the bloggers here, i'm sure they have one.
-The PS3 shouldn't be selling so badly in its native country, no matter what, theres no excuse for that.
-At least the PS3 is selling better than the 360, but thats only b/c the Japanese don't seem to like American muscle, we already knew that though.
-Also why are u replying to the news like these sales figures are something new?
I'm not trying to fight with you, just calm down. Wait until the Sony exclusives come out like...Manhu...uh...Devil May Cr....oh sorry...Final ...no...Grand thie....hmmmm...Drangon Que.....crap...uhhh...Well Something exclusive to the PS3 will make people want it one day!
Patience....
justincoool @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:15PM
I have no doubt PS3 sales will pick up...My friends and I (8 in total) are waiting for particular games to be released, I am sure there are millions of others like us......worldwide PS3 sold like 800,000 in March, damn good!
ymmv @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:15PM
The biggest problem for the PS3 is the lack of software. There are hardly t any interesting Japanese titles available for it at all. All I can think of is Virtua Fighter 5, Gundam, Ridge Racer 6 and Genji, all the other PS3 titles (including Motor Storm and R:FOM) were developed by western companies.
Even after the current six month draught, the floodgates won't open for at least another 6 months and even then it will be a trickle for Japanese gamers looking for homegrown PS3 titles. There's going to be Devil May Cry 4 and hopefully Metal Gear Solid. And what else?
Final Fantasy XIII will probably be a 2008 title, I really don't see it coming out this year. With the PS3s current sales, there'll be no chance of it breaking even. For XIII to become profitable, the installed base has to a >lot< bigger.
kingofwale @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:18PM
LOL, US muscle? are you sure that's what they dislike? or more like US products reliability, or lack there of.
if they ONLY don't break down so easily, maybe I will be tempted to get one... maybe
oh, good to see products selling well in their native country, just like how Zune is doing.
Tere @ Apr 23rd 2007 8:53PM
hey Zune is just crap
kingofwale @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:23PM
>With the PS3s current sales, there'll be no chance of it breaking even.
the current sale with NO software?
when FFXIII comes out, PS3 should already have the following big names already:
*Heavenly Sword
*LAIR
*Devil May Cry
*KillZone
*R&C
*GT
by then, I am assuming 2nd Q of 08 and after PS3's first price drop. You will probably be looking at 10 million PS3. then FFXIII 2 games should be able to sell 5 million copies and move 2-3 million PS3s all by themselves
Tere @ Apr 23rd 2007 8:53PM
and i'm sure a Playstation would break before an Xbox does
Dolla Dolla @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:28PM
@justincoool
Actually, worldwide the PS3 sold close to or over 1 million. The 800,000 was only in Europe, it sold over 100,000 in both Japan and NA each. March is their best month, obviously because they just launched in Europe.
ymmv is right. The software drought is pulling PS3 sales down. Its first big exclusive, Lair, won't hit shelves until LATE July in NA, which is ridiculous. All other games are ports, multi-plats, or polished ports with extras (Ninja Gaiden Sigma).
April NPD is going to be a wake-up call for Sony. With only 4 weeks, the PS3 will likely see less than 100,000 sold, while the Wii has a spike due to extra shipments, and the 360 will see a minor increase due to pre-orders of the Elite console.
This is frickin' painful. E3 and Home Beta can't come soon enough.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:30PM
@ kingofwhale
Your numbers are wrong. It wasn't 910,000 in Europe. It was 910,000 in "other" regions. Those regions being everything BUT Japan and the Americas. Furthermore, the 360 is currently at 3,270,000 in "other" regions.
360
----------
Japan - 380,000
Americas - 6,030,000
Others - 3,270,000
PS3
----------
Japan - 880,000
Americas - 1,370,000
Others - 910,000
Wii
----------
Japan - 2,160,000
Americas - 2,420,000
Others - 1,960,000
I understand that the PS3 broke records in the UK, and sold well in Europe. However, sales have significantly dropped in both areas. Furthermore, to imply that the 360 is NOT selling well in it's "native country" is absurd. Despite the hype of and launch of two new consoles, the Xbox 360 dominated the 2006 Holiday season.
Until the PS3 puts up significant numbers for more than a week, there shouldn't be any talk of it catching the 360. The Wii is widely believed to overtake the 360 by early 2008. The PS3 isn't widely believed to do anything but boost a few sales when FF13 and MGS4 release.
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:33PM
Keep dreaming kingofwale, ffxiii will not SELL 2-3 million ps3s. I can almost gaurantee 360 will drop it's price before q2 of 2008, meaning their lead over sony will be a LOT bigger. Square may have some historical loyalty to sony, but they are a company out to make money, they are not going to stick by a console that's losing quickly. It's the same reason they jumped from nintendo to playstation. Going by your completely unrealistic logic of being able to sell 5 million copies with 10 million systems available, we'll guess that 360 will have around 20 million, so that means if they put it on 360 they could sell 10 million copies?
Final fantasy is a big title, but not 5 million people big. Gears of war was huge, and only sold like 3.5 million copies out of ~10 million consoles available. And you know how the stereotypes go, ps2 is rpg'ers, xbox is all shooters!
Next-Gen-Gamer @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:39PM
@ kingofwale (again)
10 million by Q2 2008? Everyone is starting to debate whether or not FF13 and MGS4 can boost sales significantly, and you're already talking about 10 million? The 360 is sitting on roughly 10 million now. If the Wii overtakes the 360 by Q2 next year, you'll be looking at about 12 million from both. If that many people are buying those consoles, do you really think the PS3 is going to catch up?
And the games you listed don't seem likely to boost sales at all, save for FF13. We can't say one way or the other with Heavenly Sword or LAIR, although I'm confident that they won't be doing much as a PS3-seller. Devil May Cry, while a decent franchised, has NEVER been a system-seller, nor was Killzone. The same can be said for Ratched & Clank. Good franchises, but anyone who does NOT own the console to play it on will NOT go out and buy said console for those games. Gran Turismo is definitely a great franchise (I'm obsessed with it). However, racing games don't sell consoles.
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:48PM
I Agree with next-gen-gamer, out of that list you gave there's not many games that can be called system sellers
Off the top of my head, I think the major ones are:
Pokemon
Mario
Halo
Final Fantasy
grand theft auto
Super smash brothers
Those will actually make people go out and buy consoles
For people who already own the console, the biggest ones are:
Gears of war
Zelda
Metal gear solid
god of war
resident evil
Kingdom hearts
devil may cry
Gran turismo
Ratchet and clank
TheSh0wstopper @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:50PM
@kingofwhales,
you might be right about a lot of those games not being system sellers... on their own. But when you put them together someone might say "gee that ps3 has a bunch of good games, i want on of those". And Final Fantasy is "THE" system selling franchise. If you remember Playstation 1 took its huge lead over the saturn after final fantasy 7 came out.
TheSh0wstopper
ymmv @ Apr 23rd 2007 1:54PM
My argument was that if Sony wants to compete in the Japanese market it needs big titles from Japanese companies. I'm sure that Lair, Killzone 2 and Ratchett & Clank will do great business in the US and Europe but I'm not so sure about Japan. They will sell ok, but not sell great.
So what else is coming out this year from Japanese companies like Sega, Konami, Namco, Capcom and of course that Japanese gamers will be excited about? I alreay mentioned Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid...
rfom @ Apr 23rd 2007 2:05PM
I can understand if Nintendo fans come and gloat but 360? 200k monthly sales in US after a year and a half, which is no wonder - just two good exclusives in the entire 1st year (Gears, Dead Rising) and three in 1.5 years (Crackdown).
While it looks like the wii has it sewn up for now, these numbers are VERY worrying for MS because they show 2 things:
1. the wii has destroyed the 360's price advantage. IF you want to save USD200 on defective, no multi-player, no backward-compatibility 360, why not save USD150 more and go for wii?
2. MS has blown its 1-year lead. If they released Mass Effect and Halo3 last year - they would have a big lead. Now, their biggest titles are coming out at the same time as a host of non-exclusives (which reduces the impact) - GTA4, Assasins, Army of 2, UT3, etc.
And they have given the PS3 breathing space to bring out 4-5 exclusives of their own.
And of course, one small factor thats brushed over by 360 fans - the massive library of PS1 / PS2 games.
Want to play FF7-12, GoW1-2, KH1-2, Vagrant story, MGS1/3, DMC 1-3, Suikoden, etc etc - only one console can do that.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ Apr 23rd 2007 2:23PM
I agree, TheSh0wstopper. However, by the time the PS3 establishes a list of good games, so will the Wii and 360. As excited as I am for MGS4, I'm also excited for Mass Effect and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (which will feature online play). For every good PS3 game, there's a good Wii game, and a few good 360 games.
DSR7997 @ Apr 23rd 2007 2:23PM

To quote Willy Wonka "...that my children is called cannibalism and it is frowned upon in most societies".
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 2:31PM
I disagree with rfom's comments that 360's year advantage has been blown. Exclusives coming out at the same time as non-exclusives does not hurt the system. If you know you are going to get halo, and you know you can play assassins creed/gta4/army of 2/UT3 (which by the way was delayed until january for ps3, september for 360), you will still buy a 360. Hell, it might even help their sales since people will have possibly 4 titles coming out they are dying for all at once, for 1 system.
I know alot of people who are very excited for at least 3 of those, and then adding Halo on top of it just takes the cake.
The other thing I don't think alot of people think about is the fact that regardless of how bad 360's original launch was, people are continuing to buy them because their friends have them. I bought my 360 to play with like 3 guys from work. Me and a separate group of friends just persuaded a buddy to buy a 360, even though he's never owned a console himself, always been a PC guy. People will keep buying 360's to play with their friends and the huge gathering mass of people known as Xbox live.
Army of two is a predominately COOP game, and which system has the best multiplayer?
Little Jimmy thinks he wants a ps3, but realizes all of his friends have 360's. He wants to play gears of war and halo with them! So he decides to get a 360 instead. It saves his mom 200 bucks, and Jimmy gets to play with all his friends now. And the cycle continues...
ymmv @ Apr 23rd 2007 3:00PM
Scott, you're making the point that MS hopes everyone makes. If your friends are on Xbox Live, you're going to buy an Xbox so you can join their games. And because you're on Xbox Live, your other friends will get one too.
At a certain point this process reaches a critical mass and it could eat up the market of the other consoles and in particular the PS3. This happened with MS' own Messenger program. It became so popular that anyone who wanted to chat with anyone had to have Messenger installed since the whole world was using it. There were plenty of other free and more powerful IM programs out there but all those additional features didn't matter since the only thing that counted was the number of users. And Messenger simply had the biggest audience.
If connectivity becomes as important for gamers as IM users, than MS has a big advantage. The upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update combines the separate worlds of Xbox Live and MS Live and joins the biggest IM community with the biggest online console community. In the near future they will also make it possible for PC games to match up with Xbox Live gamers. MS' ultimate goal is to have such a big online community that console gamers who want to play/ compete online have no other choice than Xbox Live because that's where everybody else is.
Add to this a very strong line up of forthcoming games plus an excellent online movie store, IPTV and Media Center functions... The Xbox 360 is in an excellent position to defeat the PS3. Sony is trying to fight back with some innovative concepts and blockbuster games but it could be that the quality of the PS3's games and the PS3's hardware features won't matter when people start to buy an Xbox 360 primarily because that's where everyboy else is playing.
Azorean @ Apr 23rd 2007 3:24PM
The longer ppl hold out on buying a PS3 because they are waiting for games like Metal Gear 4 and Final Fantasy 13 the more likely you will see those same games jump ship to the 360 because the install base is to small on the PS3! Something needs to happen fast(MAJOR price drop) or the problems for Sony will become alot worse!!

LOL, ROFL, Jesus Christ on a stick, would you look at all these xbots, what?, you people had nothing to do while you're waiting for your 360s to get out of the repair shop for the fifth time? so you come here to troll?.....LOL....
@scott
It amazes me on how everyone keeps saying "look how the ps3 is failing in Japan" while jumping right over the fact that it's still 5 times greater then the 360 sales "but the 360 have the best games and better online" who are you talking to me?....I don't care and neither does Japan....
Remember that weird thing with that Gundam game in Japan that caused a massive surge in sales?....it wasn't really that long ago, so I would say it's safe to say all the ps3 needs a this point some good games and of course price cut...........
it's funny, a system with no decent games, weak online, and expensive as hell, still manage to get to roughly 4 million units sold, how the hell is that even possible? with the negative image of the ps3 people somewhere are still buying them and that's good don't care how you xbots try to spin it
No matter how you try to spin it the ps3 isn't going to roll over and die.....in time it would be neck to neck with the 360 and that would be the real race
"but it could be that the quality of the PS3's games and the PS3's hardware features won't matter when people start to buy an Xbox 360 primarily because that's where everyboy else is playing."
seeing as how the wii have roughly 7 million units sold is just nothing short of amazing, I mean who the hell is buying this thing? based on what game they must have?..........Zelda......Zelda.....and more Zelda?....Don't get me wrong I am not bashing the system, I am just say that maybe people care about a little bit more then "LIVE PWNSSS and HALO".....just saying that for a system that been on the market for over 18 months with the "better" games and "LIVE PWNSSS" seems to be closing the gap by Zelda and the wiimote in just 19 weeks...
My point is that the 360 has been on the market for a year with no competition, it sold well (if you want to call it that) by default......your blind to think the ps3 and the wii haven't taken a huge bite out of potential 360 sales, again look how insanely the wii have been flying of the shelves, much quicker then the ps3 and especially the 360, could it be it's cheap price? or nobody hasn't seen anything great about the 360 expect "LIVE PWNSS"
It's sad really, to think " the 360 will sale because of LIVE PWNSS" is just sad
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 8:13PM
Roughly 4 million sold?
http://www.nexgenwars.com/
I count just under 3.
The only reason I brought up Japan is because it WAS supposed to be a high selling area. Japan, North America, Europe. Supposed to be the highest selling spots by far. Microsoft knew they were going to suck in Japan, but they keep trying. Sony planned on doing well. They are doing AWFUL there. Don't even compare it to 360 (doing even worse), 11,000 systems a month is TERRIBLE. Don't use 360's abysmal sales in Japan to justify how bad your system is selling. That "5x more" doesn't mean as much when the numbers are so small. If gamestop sells 10 wii games and 1 ps3 game in a day, they can't go around screaming "omfg wii games outselling ps3 games 10 to 1!!!". The numbers are too small to justify using multipliers like you did.
Regarding the wii flying off shelves "much quicker then the ps3 and especially the 360", when did the ps3's every fly off the shelves quicker then 360s? I work at a Gamestop, so don't even try to pull that BS on me. We had about a 3 week period after launch when everyone was asking, then mid-december we actually had them in stock, and nobody bought them. I love watching the ps3 flop, and I've checked how many we sell each month. We average about 3-4 a month, in a very populated area. We average 5-6 360's sold a month. Oddly 360 has been out how much longer? And still selling better?
Regarding your ignorant "LIVE PWNSSSSS" part of the response:
I love how you use the wii as an example, since it's a totally different beast then the ps3/360. That's like comparing ds sales to 360/ps3 sales, they are totally different.
My argument was not about LIVE itself, more of the fact that people buy consoles to play with friends. I don't care if its ps3s network or xbox's network, people still buy consoles to play online with their friends nowadays. And 360's jump out the door got consoles in alot of peoples hands, and perpetuated the selling because anyone who has played online with people, knows how fun it can be, and tells their friends. They bring a friend over to play a game, the friend gets hooked, wants to keep playing with his buddy, so he buys a 360.
As your own captain jackass Phil Harrison just recently said, word of mouth is far more powerful then what any PR firm can do. Ps3 is not getting any word of mouth, and the overall opinion of most customers is that it's too damn expensive, no games, lousy online. 360 is getting positive word of mouth, since it's cheaper then ps3, looks as good, has a ton of games, and amazing online.
Andir3.0 @ Apr 23rd 2007 9:49PM
Your still here trying to justify your 360 purchase "scott"?
And by the way. nexgenwars is by far the worse of all the "numbers" sites. The guy that runs it estimates the values based on favorable numbers. He then applies a "rough estimate" on pieces sold per time frame and auto-increments the count even though they may not have sold.
The entire time I've watched the site, he's changed the numbers about 6 times to meet the demand of the forum members who scream and cry if the PS3 gains a percentage point. I'll just assume your one of those members.
For anyone else reading. Head over to the forums and see how bias and one-sided the whole site is and you'll see why the numbers are horribly inaccurate. You can't count the number of whiny "your numbers are wrong" threads in which he goes and adjusts his numbers to.
scott @ Apr 23rd 2007 11:07PM
Nope, wasn't actually aware the site was the inaccurate. I don't check it that often, it doesn't seem too far off. My apologies if my numbers were horribly off though!

Hey, I've got an Xbox 360 and a PS3 so I want both systems to succeed. It's just that the 360 is the better system to own at the moment and will be for the foreseeable time unless Sony starts cranking out great games real soon now.
rfom @ Apr 24th 2007 6:33AM
Scott, dont agree with you-
"Exclusives coming out at the same time as non-exclusives does not hurt the system."
The problem is, you have 7-8 great non-exclusives and 2-3 great exclusives - people dont count "4-2 to 360 vs PS3 in terms of exclsuives" they count "11-9 to 360 overall" - thats why Gears made such an impact - there was NIL other great games around for months!
"people are continuing to buy them because their friends have them...huge gathering mass of people known as Xbox live."
Thats the problem...if 360 had a 25mn base, it would be a killer..but 11 million (shipped, not sold, and includes replacements) is not even 10% of the market.
And I can understand the networking effect of Live...but MS lost the plot by charging for it...as a result only 2-3 million Gold users is my guess which is just too low, though obviously those 2-3mn would be strong users with a strong community.....

I own both systems and love both. But I think people are blowing this pay for Live thing out of proportion. It is only $50 a year, less than a game, and IS INCREDIBLE!!! I dont even play single player/campaign mode any more. I just jump right online everytime I turn my 360 on. I would much rather pay $100 a year for LIVE than take what Sony is giving me for free. If I had to review 360 as a console as a whole (including LIVE) i would give it a 9/10 (the only reason not a 10/10 is because they break soo much). If I had to review it without LIVE I would give it live a 6.5-7/10, thats how big of a difference LIVE makes. If you have a 360 YOU HAVE TO HAVE LIVE!!! or you really dont know what your missing. so for $50 a year everyone should stop complaining about the price... SERIOUSLY!!!
