Phil Harrison answers your questions again...
If there's one thing we love about Sony's Philliam Harrison (what, you mean Phil isn't short for Philliam?), it's that he's always available to answer questions for whatever reason. These are interesting questions, so we'll go ahead and summarize the Q's and the A's below. Enjoy! If you could go back in time, what would you tell your past self?
Phil said: "the professional advice I'd give myself is to "think bigger"...I would have encouraged him to be more ambitious, bigger scale, more aggressive in changing the way games were made and also to have invested more heavily in creating online experiences - however experimental, however unsuccessful."
Where do you see gaming, socially and culturally, in 20 years?
Phil responds thus: "I hope that videogames and electronic forms of interactive entertainment continue to expand to new audiences, all the time. Linked to that, I want to see videogames given more credibility as a mainstream form of entertainment through appropriate cultural commentary and criticism." We all do, Philliam, we all do.
So... encouraging or discouraging "homebrew" games?
Phil? "Let me first say that Homebrew is sometimes a misused term and so for the purposes of this answer I will exclude pirates and hackers with illegal intentions from the definition." He goes on, "I fully support the notion of game development at home using powerful tools available to anyone. We were one of the first companies to recognize this in 1996 with Net Yaroze on PS1...we will do our industry a service by providing opportunities for the next generation of creative and technical talent." But remember, guys, piracy isn't allowed and Sony will do what they can to prevent that.
Does SCE grow concerned over the loss of multiplatform titles?
"We have the widest selection of meaningful exclusives on PlayStation 3 - by virtue of our own investments in our development studios and strategic support of independent developers and publishers...Within SCE Worldwide Studios we have the largest platform-dedicated development resource in the industry - with more people, and more teams, dedicated to making games exclusively for PlayStation 3."
What're you going to do about all the negative Sony press?
Phil replies: "We absolutely have a lot of work to do but I'm convinced we have the right strategy - and recent announcements like Home and Little Big Planet have resonated very positively with our audiences around the world, including some commentators who had been previously critical of us." He also goes on to discuss the mistakes Sony has made and apologizes for them. He also mentions that positive word-of-mouth is far more impressive than any PR firm can do. So as people enjoy the system, they'll grow comfortable in talking about it and recommending it.
So... price drop?
We're not even going to quote. Because the answer is no. What'd you expect? Feel free to drop some comments on what you think of all this -- we feel he's a pretty competent guy and answered all these reader-submitted questions with the greatest of Sony style. Take that as you will.

I love my PS3 too.

some good answers there... pro homebrew and even suggesting 'apologize' for mistake?
Wow, I'd thought he'd say something like "negative press? what are you talking about"? ;)
So, Kudo to Phill.
I think at this point, Sony is pretty pissed at software companies inability to meet their deadline for games. but what can you do? *shrugs*, just give Enix as much money you can to secure FF series.
shase @ Apr 23rd 2007 2:01PM
I didnt like how he responded about multiplatform.... He kinda shrugged and said "we will make exclusives people want to play". Some Sony's games are great but imo sony doesnt really have many franchises that can compete with the "best out there":
FF series is still the best RPG.
Resident evil still one of the best survival horror.
I think Phil shouldve made the 3rd parties sound more important... it would be great if Sony have "must have franchises" but right now they still need 3rd parties..
Arawn @ Apr 23rd 2007 2:59PM
Sony needs more 1st and 3rd parties. Also I'm not buying a ps3 until MGS4 and/or FF13 comes out at least.

"2. some good answers there... pro homebrew and even suggesting 'apologize' for mistake?"
He didn't say that they'd support homebrew. He simply dodged the question and made it /sound/ like Sony supported homebrew. But they'll continue to stifle it, as they have, because they believe homebrew = pirates.

I highly suggest reading the whole article. Although Nick did a good job with his summary, there is a lot more in the full answers.

Phil Harrison is the only "higher ups" that I respect within the SCE branch. Everybody else seems to be way to self-righteous or arrogant especially in terms of its customers.
Phil legitimizes the PS3s price.
The others (Ken Kutaragi) EXPECT consumers to pay.
mccomber @ Apr 23rd 2007 7:32PM
I wonder how the ps3 would be different, both as a piece of hardware and the overall current atmosphere surrounding it, if Krazy Ken had been pulled from the project a couple of years ago. The more we hear about his choices (spiderman font?) the more it seems like an ego trip for him and now the company is trying to make what really is a great piece of hardware actually viable to consumers. I'm glad we're hearing more from Phil, he seems to be a pretty good spokesperson for Sony at this point.
"First of all, I would not take credit for designing the machine."
I may be one of a few who thought this, but depending on how he actually spoke those words I'd read a lot into the use of "would not" instead of "could not".
Andir3.0 @ Apr 23rd 2007 9:41PM
Hell, If nobody else will, I'll take credit for the design... It's a damn fine piece of machinery if you ask me. Build and feature-wise.
Zta @ Apr 24th 2007 9:35AM
"He also goes on to discuss the mistakes Sony has made"
This is interesting. Did he just say "we apologize of the mistakes we've made.", or did he mention anything in particular?

Do yourself a favor, and if you read the slashdot article, stop when you get to the comments. I used to read slashdot all the time, it's still a great place to see tech headlines, but the people who comment on that site are just a bunch of asshats.
Of course there were some questions that Phil dodged, and others he didn't fully answer, that's what's expected when you interview someone representing a company as large as Sony.
Reading their comments was like watching CNN give commentary on anything George Bush says. It doesn't matter if ANYTHING good or positive was said, they will just tear it apart.
I'm not even a Sony fanboy, the only system I own is a wii, but I feel slashdot, and the rest of the internets need to cut sony some slack.
So Phil, if you read this, you did a great job. You answered most of the questions, you only put some slight spin on things, and most importantly, you didn't say anything outlandish that might hurt Sony further.
That's exactly what Sony needed, and that's exactly what people should have expected.
