Devil May Cry 4 week continues with an interview from Tuesday
Tuesday held an interview with Devil May Cry 4's director, Hideaki Itsuno and its producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi. They talked about this and that, those and these, them and they. We'll summarize the interviews because that's what's so darn fun about video games. What's up with the Devil Bringer?
Itsuno: It's a new way to fight. Can't shoot 'em or slice 'em? Throw them around a bit. It adds a third way to deal out destruction! (I'm paraphrasing, clearly) Also, there's a lot more to it than we've seen. It can stop attacks, deflect, etc. A super awesome shield, of sorts.
Is there anything specific that you were able to do with the PS3? Anything... stylish?
Itsuno: There's stuff we thought we'd be able to do, but the time element kind of got in the way. There was a lot that we could do with the PS3 -- it's not the hardware's fault, but... we just don't have the time to implement everything we wanted. But don't worry... the gameplay is still pretty much the same. (I don't mind getting a new fix of the familiars)
Devil May Cry 2 sucked. Did anything that you learned from the other games carry over?
Itsuno: Sure. We want to fit in more enemies, better AI. But as far as games go, we're proud of Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, so we'll probably use that as a frame of reference. Because it was freakin' awesome.
So what's the relationship between Nero and Dante? Will we be seeing any sexy slash in the future?
Kobayashi: "Dante is an enemy of Nero as he comes in and fights, but Nero doesn't know that Dante is actually a devil hunter."
The trailer yesterday wasn't true to the final product -- Dante will be in different places. So where will he be? Will he show up often?
Kobayashi: "...As the story progresses and there's a need for you to use Dante, you will be able to use him and it's pretty much well interlaced into the progression, the switch, between Nero and Dante. So you will be able to use Dante." Awesome!
Will you talk about the philosophy behind choosing Nero as lead instead of Dante?
Basically, Kobayashi said that Dante was so powerful at the end of the PS2 titles it wouldn't be enough to just play as him again. Enter Nero. Nero also serves as a new face for a new generation and audience -- so people can grow with him. But the veterans still get their Dante fix!
So, will this game do well on the PS3?
Kobayashi: "DMC4 will be at the top of the charts for a long time - at least two years, we expect. There won't be a game in two years to come along and be better than this game." Wow! Big words!
What do you feel about the PlayStation 3 as a platform?
Kobayashi: "Personally I like the look of the PS3 over the Xbox 360 - the external look and the sleekness of it - but that's just my personal preference." Hmm... sort of a dodgy answer, but we'll accept it. Our PS3's are very, very sexy.
Wednesday's news was released, so we'll type that up lickety-split. What a gross saying. Anyway, there's a ton we didn't cover, but seriously. Two gigantic interview summaries? You can look around and see if there's anything that interests you!

... he likes the look when asked about the PS3 as a platform?
wtf?
Would this be the Kobayashi from the Usual Suspects?

Anyways cant wait to play this.

I am still pissed at capcom for releasing this game for the 360 and then not giving PS3 owners Dead Rising and Lost Planet. I can not afford to buy both systems, so I will not be able to play those games, but the 360 guys can play DMC4. The game does look good, but I plan on purchasing it used from either Gamespot or EB, cause I think when you do that capcom will get no money, all the money goes to the retailer.
I hope this games sales poorly on all consoles!!!

Way to let your rabid inner fanboy delude your rational thinking process. Us PS3 owners should go out and buy DMC4 in droves and hopefully the same won't be done by the 360 owners (although this is doubtful considering how well other Capcom titles have done on the big white box). That is the only thing that will "show that nasty capcom" what a mistake it is to go multi platform. With you're logic, knowing the 360 owners most likely will buy this Capcom product, a piss poor showing by PS3 owners will only REINFORCE they made a sound business decision.
I love my playstation as much as the next guy, but the rabbid responses like yours are only going to hurt our cause in the long run. Wake up and smell the coffee.

This interview made me laugh... come on now seriously... they didnt do ANYTHING with the ps3 version because of time (they want to release both versions at the same time)
And the statement about the PS3's looks.. come on.. wtf. It seems to me like they dont want to take the "time" to learn the ps3... so they pump out a half decent game on 2 consoles. i really think this will turn out to be a crappy game... on BOTH consoles.
When Capcom shut down Clover... i lost ALL respect for them.
Cagalli @ Apr 25th 2007 7:35PM
I agree with you, Devils Advocate. We PS3 owners need to get over the anger for Capcom and support this games when it comes out. Sure, I was upset at first too, but now I just want to see this game succeed on the PlayStation so that future sequels will continue to be on it. This is just speculation, but if the 360 version doesn't sell well, maybe Capcom will rethink their strategy. I really don't see them sticking to their "multi-platform philosophy."
Luke @ Apr 25th 2007 8:21PM
@ Devils Advocate
I see your logic devils advocate but maybe you did not understand mine, I am dissatisfied with capcom for not bringing those 360 exclusives over to the PS3. Usually a logical dissatisfied customer will stop supporting the company that he is dissatisfied with. So I am still not buying this game new.
sicklesdawg @ Apr 25th 2007 11:37PM
@ LUKE
IM with you on this one f capcum i have almost all their titles and sequels on ps2...they were born on ps2 (onimusha, devil may cry,Okami) and they shell them out to Microsoft wheres the respect! I'll wait to buy it USED
jorma @ Apr 26th 2007 1:30AM
Devils Advocate: I agree with your conclusions but.. seriously... "our cause"?
I just think that if a man is to have a 'cause' in life, its pretty sad when that 'cause' is a console-war between two corporate giants who wouldnt piss on you if you were on fire, unless there was something in it for them.
Oh well. This game will own regardless, and i really pity the fool who would rather miss out on it just to make a 'point'.
Adrian vG @ Apr 26th 2007 8:49AM
No offence to PS3 fanboys, since I'm a PS fan, too, but I think that DMC4 will be just another game that sucks on the PS3. When will the high quality games arrive? Spiderman 3 doesn't look good enough either. Too plastic.
TheSh0wstopper @ Apr 26th 2007 9:13AM
Arghhhh,
I was soo much happier when this was an exclusive. Now it is coming out on both systems and I dont know which one to get it for. I was looking foward to getting it for the PS3, but if I get it for 360 I get achievements and rumble, not to mention wat other things they might do with it on LIVE like downloadable content. This is not good for Sony... If big name games keep going multiplatform and there is no incentive to get it for PS3 then they can lose a lot of sales. So far most multiplatform games even look better on 360. Im not making a decision yet, but it seems like the 360 version might be the way to go.

@Devil May Cry Guy
I see why you would want to buy it for the 360. But do you really think it would be better on it? I mean, who still notices rumble? I don't even notice it when I'm playing DMC3, I forgot it even had rumble on. Making a decision based on rumble is unbelievable. And what rumble features are you talking about? The controller just vibrates alittle when you hit something. It isn't neccessary for gameplay, which what it is all about, right?
Now the 360 controller, I can't imagine busting out combos on that thing. The triggers are good for FPS but for an action game like this, it would be pretty awkward. Choosing something like rumble over ease of use is preposterous.
If you were a true fan of the series, you would get it for the system it has proven to be good at.
Dolla Dolla @ Apr 26th 2007 11:58AM
@Vincent060
Actually, a true fan of the series will play the game regardless of where it ends up. Would you say he wasn't a true fan of Ninja Gaiden if he decided to pick up Ninja Gaiden Sigma, even though it's just polished up with new additions from an original Xbox game?
And, God forbid someone actually enjoys rumble! I mean, Sony took it out because it's useless, right? And and and ... Phil said it was so last gen, so there's no reason for rumble to exist on a Playstation platform anymore, right???
Or, are they adding it back?
God forbid a gamer enjoy a game on a system it wasn't originally intended for. Blasphemy!
TheSh0wstopper @ Apr 26th 2007 12:33PM
huh? Did someone say BLASPHEMY??
WHERE IS THE BLASPHEMER!!!
LETS STONE THE GOD-LESS BASTARD!!!
HANG THE NON-BELIEVER!!!
UNCLEAN UNCLEAN!!!
Jon @ Apr 26th 2007 1:23PM
I can't believe you actually asking "Does anyone notice rumble anymore".
Your living in Sony's dreamworld. Rumble is awesome and continues to be usefull in most games. How the hell would you know when your getting shot in a n FPS? Or when your slipping offroad in a racing game...or how do you pick locks in Splinter cell...and on and on and on.
This game is going to sell like hot cakes on the 360 which has had a 5.7 games per console attach rate for 6 months. Transaltion: 360 users buy games and lots of them!
So good luck with your phony protest which will have the exact opposite effect of what your hoping for.
Will you also boycott Metal Gear when it's eventually released on the 360 as well? Yes that's right...the other Metal Gear games came to the original Xbox and with the huge install base lead the 360 has over the PS3 you better believe that that game is most likely going to be on the 360 sooner rather than later...still doubting...hello have you heard of GTA4 on the 360 day and date as PS3 release???
mccomber @ Apr 26th 2007 1:33PM
As for graphical differences, this may be the first of many exceptions to the "rule". So far, and as reinforced by developers, it would seem multi-platform games that have suffered a downgrade on the ps3 did so because they were built as 360 games and then ported over... given the games past, unless the 360 build was planned all along, and the game was built for that system, we have to assume it was built with the ps3 in mind and as such, should look at least the same on both, or perhaps even be a bit worse on the box.
We've seen from first-party titles that ps3 games can look great, so I see no reason why third-party titles built for the ps3 won't continue that trend. Ninja Gaiden is looking pretty damn sharp... looking forward to seeing the differences in the Darkness, the next big multi-platform title being built for both at the same time.
As for online stuff, I bet that in the future we'll see the same content released on both systems, achievments will be on both in their unique forms... if you own both, it will come down to the controller, and your own personal console preference.
I hope Sony brings back rumble to shut people up about that. I'd personally argue that if you don't have surround sound you are missing out on more immersion that a shaking controller offers, but that's just me. I don't miss rumble at all, but I would miss having the rear speakers filled with gunfire and explosions in Resistance.
Cagalli @ Apr 26th 2007 2:12PM
Why don't people understand that the PS3 IS IN FACT GETTING RUMBLE BACK. Several higher-ups in Sony have already confirmed this, so stop making excuses.
Vincent060 @ Apr 26th 2007 6:24PM
@15
I guess you're right about the 'true fan' part. That was ignorance on my part and I apologize. I actually don't see anything wrong with buying the 360 version if you had a 360, just like I don't see anything wrong with getting the PS3 version neither. I'm not saying people should not buy it. Far from it. I believe people should buy it for whatever system they have. In fact, I believe people should buy it for both systems, regardless if their own the other systme or not. I think it's good to see 360 owners experience a game as great as DMC4.
But I still see how having or not having rumble could possibly be the deciding factor for buying a game. I mean it's good and all that they are adding it back in, but only after people started crying about it.
@17
I thought that's is why they have the screen for. You know when you are losing health, that usually means you're getting hurt. And when you see your car driving off the road, you should probably turn to get back on. Do you wait for the controller to rumble to do something? If you have to wait for the controller to rumble to know when to shoot back or turn while driving then you must be blind. (Of course no offense to you if you are blind. My apologise.)
And as for MGS4 going to the 360, they already said that it won't, since they built it from the ground up for the PS3. They might release it later for the 360, but it'll be much, MUCH later.
