PlayStation Eye: Sony's insanely advanced camera for PS3

This is not a toy: the newly unveiled Playstation Eye is one sophisticated piece of hardware. Some features of this new PS3 peripheral include:
- A sophisticated microphone with the ability to reduce background noise and focus on the spoken word for smoother, more accurate speech recognition and transfer
- The ability to capture videos and audio clips directly to your PS3's hard disk drive
- Engineered to perform well even in low-light conditions
- A range of different capturing modes, including slow motion and time-lapse
- Faster frame rate for improved tracking, responsiveness and smoothness
- Two position zoom lens for close-up and full body options
- A range of eye-catching visual effects to apply to photos and videos
- Bundled with EyeCreate™ editing software, which allows users to save and edit photos, video and audio clips
In many ways, this camera is more advanced than most home camcorders. PlayStation Eye features 4 channel audio input and the ability to record at an insane 120 frames/second. The camera supports up to 640x480 video, and can record uncompressed or MJPEG video. Eye of Judgment, a card battling game demoed at E3, will be one of the first titles to take advantage of this revolutionary camera.

Any word if the 3D motion capture Eye is still coming (referred to as EyeToy HD in the past)?
Also coming at launch will be Snakeball that will allow for facial mapping in the the game.

WOW!!!
WTF!!!
Sony is not joking around about this whole next gen thing. Its soo funny... Everything Microsoft comes out with looks like Fisher Price made it, and everything Sony comes out with looks like it came from The Jetsons.

Sonyguy @ Apr 26th 2007 12:29PM
The cam should be cool but I dont know if I would say its some crazy advanced cam. 640x480 on a platform that is suppose to be true HD?
Dreadhead541 @ Apr 27th 2007 2:57AM
what about eyedentify?
Draco @ Apr 26th 2007 12:46PM
I thought the next eye toy was supposed to be HD? mind you 640x480 is plenty for the PS3, I mean that still takes up a fair bit of real estate on your screen.

I guess im the only one that finds that thing fugly? Cool features but WTF?
scott @ Apr 26th 2007 12:56PM
I'm sure you'll all lose any impressions you once had for this thing once it comes out at 99.99

Colin @ Apr 26th 2007 1:24PM

What happended to HD? Do sony every deliver fully on anything they announce at E3?
Colin @ Apr 26th 2007 1:37PM
@mike...
I don't think Sony ever 'announced' an HD eyetoy at E3...do you have a reference?
The other other Colin (man, too many of us!)

@fthis...
Um...this is a GAMING pereipheral. You might notice that 3 of the current consoles already have a camera (X360/PS2/PSP) so it is an accepted and expected product. There are already 5 games expected to use the Eye, 2 of which will be available on launch.
Have you availed yourself of Sony's recent list of upcoming titles? It was posted here recently. Also, Sony just released 25 more PSN games.
alienclay @ Apr 26th 2007 2:22PM
speaking of that, where is my psp camera? i don't like importing.
BrokenDesign @ Apr 26th 2007 2:27PM
Considering you can capture video to the PS3 hard drive, low light capabilities and edit movies with the software, I'm guessing that PS3 Home is going to be a flood of screenings of people's homemade porn. Wonderful. *rolls eyes loudly* Remind me to never step into Home if I ever get a PS3.
Killer @ Apr 26th 2007 4:01PM
:0 It looks like a F-ing gun.
Also how much will this thing cost?
EvoAnubis @ Apr 26th 2007 5:52PM
Looks good to me. Can't wait to buy one.
ZRX @ Apr 26th 2007 6:02PM
So can I set it up as a live security camera that I can access via my PSP over the internet ?
EvoAnubis @ Apr 26th 2007 6:19PM
Interesting
ck @ Apr 26th 2007 6:17PM
BrokenDesign: What's the matter? Don't you like porn? Freak.
datnizzle @ Apr 30th 2007 11:15AM
Hey brokendesign, if the only thing you can think of using this for is porn, you may not be intelligent enough to fully apreciate HOME. I hope you stay away too. By the way, we all know you're never getting a ps3.
Tyler @ Apr 26th 2007 9:38PM
@21
I didnt think people like that existed either.. Whatever it takes to bash Sony i guess..
Nik @ Apr 26th 2007 10:49PM
Theres that word again. "Revolutionary". First yesterday talking about HOME and now here about Eyetoy 2. Now don't get me wrong I love my PS3 and think it is making steps in the evolution of hardcore gaming but a Second Life knockoff and the refinement of an idea from last generation aren't revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination.
James @ Apr 26th 2007 10:57PM
IT'S NOT LIKE THEIR HARDWARE ENGINEERS CAN MAKE GAMES!!! THIS CAMERA IS NOT PREVENTING GAMES FROM GETTING MADE!!! STOP YELLNG!
