Sony and Immersion start working on a rumble...axis
Keeping with the palindrome name of SIXAXIS, we'd like to invite you guys to think up a palindrome for a PlayStation 3 controller that rumbles. Let's see... RUMBLBMUR? Terrible. That's my offering. Anyway, Sony and Immersion are officially in chats to discuss how to incorporate their technology into the SIXAXIS and other such peripherals. This is coming from Sony PR honcho Dave Karraker, who replied to some curious people on a Killzone fansite. Asking about rumble and whatever, Karraker responded thus: "We are currently in discussions with Immersion on how we can incorporate their technologies into our products. No word on when that will happen." By "no word" we are of course going to take that as "announcement coming soon. E3? TGS? Sure." Thoughts?

It'll happen... the PS2 rumble with 1.70 was the fist step in the post-lawsuit relationship.

This is what I see will happen.
announcement soon, but with combination of PS3 120GB version that will include
*Silver version
*Rumble feature controller
*HDMI cable
*upscale for regular DVD and games.
and it will sell during Christmas for 599.. the current version (60GB) will be lowered to 499.
now, that'd be sweet.

"ShockAxis" controller, there I said it, done, that should be the name of the controller...

yeah, but how soo do we have these controllers in our hands. and how soon will developers use the funtion? will mgs4, and heavenly sword use it? will popular games like motorstorm and resistance be backwards patched to support it?
is this the same "weights on a cheap motor" form of rumble or will we see something more advanced? if it's a gyroscopic force feedback than a name like "spinaxis" might be more appropiate. perhaps "mo-shock" for a more rumble centered name. will the price of an already expensive $50 controller go up? gamers want to know!

Yet another company that says something else, but does it anyway. It's not a bad thing, it's actually good for ps3 owners. Just saying i'm getting tired of BS of companies saying one thing and doing the oppisite. That goes for any company anywhere, (not just sony). Also if you are one of the people that said that they hated rumble and that it was past non-needed technology. You're a hypocrite for being excited over this. (Not saying anyone that posted here before this, is. Just saying if you were one of them don't even say, "OMG, I'm so going to buy it.")
End of rant.
Good news though.
Patrick @ Apr 26th 2007 8:17PM
Apparently PS3 fanboys aren't aware of what a palindrome is, if you didn't catch on to Nick's attempt, I'll help you out.
A Palindrome is spelled the same way forwards and back. Hence his RUMBLBMUR.
SonYnoS .. ShocKcohS
Things like that. Both are horrible, but at least when you go to bed tonight you'll know what a Palindrome is.
Your welcome.

@kingofwale
Man, that would kinda suck for me since I just now brought 60gb version.
I hope that they just make another sixaxis with rubmble built in. They can start shipping the new 120GB versions with the new controllers.
Brad Hodson @ Apr 26th 2007 8:30PM
It'll probably end up being a jazzed version of SixAxiS 2. Probably something like:
SixAxi2
or 2ixAxiS
So the '2' matches the S on either side. This would most likely be the case, as they wouldn't want a whole new brand out of nearly the same device.

Well, as someone who keeps tabs on most things that go on in the gaming world, I can tell anyone reading this that the PS3 already has the capability to upscale DVDs, and this will NOT be an option in a future version of the console, as it's standard. Not to say that it has been IMPLIMENTED, just that they're all capable of doing it already. Word on the street says May firmware will unlock the scaler, which means all games should play in any resolution, and Blu-Ray should do the same (goodbye 1080/480 Blu-Ray problem)... Also look for some kind of implimentation of IPTV before christmas. The future is looking kind of bright...
mccomber @ Apr 26th 2007 8:53PM
Does this mean that we can stop hearing complaints about lack of rumble, and move on to complaints about buying a new controller now? In that vein, how about the "flamemagnet"; not a palindrome, but it's an appropriate name.
As for a "new" ps3, I hope Sony was smart enough to see the reaction to the xbox elite overall, and just drop the price on the 60gb to $500. Add anything you want to that package (cheap hdmi cable to placate complainers?), just get the price in line with the elite.
...actually I sort of like 2ixAxiS...
Jason B. @ Apr 26th 2007 9:35PM
Dualshock SA or SixAxis DS should be fine. They would probably go with the latter since it puts more emphasis on the SixAxis name.
Naaiif @ Apr 26th 2007 8:59PM
Six-BIG FUCK OFF RUMBLE-AXIS
Stef Geiger @ Apr 26th 2007 9:16PM
Andrew: I'd love to know whoever you get your info from. There will be no firmware update to "unlock the scaler" - because the PS3 doesn't HAVE hardware scaler. So unless they completely change how the PS3 runs (and make the last SPE do nothing but scaling operations instead of running the XMB), games will NEVER get scaled like that. It's a completely different situation for DVD playback though, because there's so much free processing power. For what it's worth, I really think Sony (after pushing all this "1080p is the only HD" crap) insist that all developers code their games to output at at least 1080i.
My suggestion for the new Sixaxis - SomanydynamoS. Hey, it almost makes sense, since a dynamo is basically a backwards motor.

Didn't Sony say something about free replacement controllers for life (when the battery stops working)
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=20528
So perhaps they could have a free trade in program and drop the free replacement guarantee. That way those that swap get it for free and those that don't still get their free replacement down the road.
WINWINWIN
Nick Boyd @ Apr 26th 2007 10:25PM
i would be kind of pissed off i spent money on buying, say multiple controllers from launch and then realized that i would have to by a completely new set of controllers to be able to experience the "rumble" effect.
just a thought
humpty @ Apr 26th 2007 10:42PM
PS3 DOES HAVE A SCALER...
The downloaded 720p videos from the PSStore play at 1080p on my 1080p panel... how is that? Its being FREAKIN SCALED by a SCALING chip... if PS3 can scale 720p to 1080p then it can do the same for 480p to 1080p and everything in between.
Sony hasnt enabled the same for DVD to protect the BD movie sales, since some people will just stick with upscaled DVDs (eg. if they dont have an hdtv or are usig composite).
Zach @ Apr 26th 2007 10:55PM
GO HANG A SALAMI IM A LASAGNA HOG. THATS A PALENDROME.
Btw i think shoxis is good or ShockAxis
Otsego_Undead @ Apr 26th 2007 11:45PM
Welcome to marketing. If its a variation of the SIXAXIS its going to be a line extension. So instead of renaming it there is going to be a model number. Kinda like the Accord EX, or the Civic Si. So my vote goes for:
SIXAXIS Type-R
Now you know. and we all know, that knowing is half the battle.
mccomber @ Apr 27th 2007 12:13AM
Didn't think about that Colin; I like it though, and that would be great if they did that, even if it cost a few bucks. Doesn't mean we won't still hear complainers, because... well, I don't have a reason for it, but I just know it will happen. Sun rises and sets sort of deal.
Of course, the original ps1 controller was replaced by the dual analog (arguably a much larger step), and then the dualshock, and it wasn't like there was an exchange/replacement program, we just said damn and bought them.
Gamble20 @ Apr 27th 2007 12:32AM
I bet it will just be something plain...
like SIXAXIS 2, or maybe they will make it a little cooler and say, SIXAXIS II.
It would be awesome if they could make one though. all this good Sony press is coming out, they have to deliver on these new expectations or the media will lash out hard. Thats how they work. When you do something good they stay quiet, they don't compliment you, and then when you screw up they yell about how terrible you are.
That said, I think Sony will deliver on MOST of their promises and be able to keep up the positive press.
Stef Geiger @ Apr 27th 2007 12:36AM
Wow Humpty, you're really wrong. When you play a 720p video and it plays fullscreen in 1080i/p, it's not using hardware to do the scaling. It's using software. And using software to scale stuff just isn't feasible while running a game because the system is taxed so heavily. Look, if there was a scaling chip in it, this problem NEVER would have existed, and at the very least, Sony would have said "Don't worry, we'll fix the scaling chip in a firmware update." But what have they said about scaling issues? "Most people have TV's that can do 720p and 1080i."
I even remember reading an article about the 360 about how the developers made a smart choice by including a scaling chip - the article was basically slamming the PS3 for not having one. I know, it's Microsoft propaganda, but they're right.
sam-evans @ Apr 27th 2007 12:42AM
@kingofwale
Sony wont release a 120GB PS3, if they were going to release a high capacity one, it would be more than 120GB as the Xbox 360(not so)Elite has a 120gb Hdd
scott @ Apr 27th 2007 1:08AM
Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it's not the next-generation feature.

Is this the rumble they were talking about with the slight hum like holding a light saber to a near-kick?
If so, that's next-gen rumble done right. We better get this soon, and that's why I haven't bought a second controller yet - I knew they'd come through.

Hey stanj. You know what else is loyal - a dog. And id have to say my dog is more loyal than you. If i say wanna go in the car and he gets real exited- but then i remember i have an something more important to do, he gets disappointed.
But the next day when i give him what i promised he glady accepts and doesn't whinge and moan like a bitch! So unless youve got a time machine and some pals high up in sony management STFU. Now i go to pat my dog, HE deserves it and appreciates it.
