Devil May Cry 4 -- video interview with Hideaki Itsuno
Thursday's update in Games Radar's all-week-long Devil May Cry 4 coverage held a video interview with director Hideaki Itsuno. He talked about his vision of the game and also a few other details we'll give you below. But watch the video. You get to see, pretty much, the entire first stage of the game.- All the animation, battle options, whatever... couldn't be done for the PS2.
- They are fully taking advantage of the space available on Blu-ray as well as the PS3's standard hard drive. Installing the entire game on the hard drive will be possible and they'll compact the game as best they can to make that install as quick as possible.
- 60fps is the chosen option because the characters are so quick. While it makes the graphics nicer, the speed of gameplay is key. Having only 4 frames to choose an action is a much better choice with 60fps. So he says.
- Itsuno says the only game similar to Devil May Cry is Ghosts N' Goblins. The difficulty, twitch timing reactions... sounds about right.
- The Catch-22 of Japanese game development, as told by Itsuno, is that to get the budget to make a great game, it needs to appeal to a worldwide audience. This is probably why we don't see a lot of Shadow of the Colossus games, or artsy/niche games in general.
Along with Hideaki Itsuno, they interviewed Matoko Tanaka, the level designer as well as the artist who thought up Nero, Tatsuya Yoshikawa. Both of those are also very entertaining -- give them your time. If we tried to sum their interviews up, too, this would be way too long. So we'll leave those two to you!

can't wait! I picked up DMC3 just to get into the action- boy was I suprised. Not only is it difficult as hell (how do those guys do that on youtube?!) but very deep if you want to get through all of the missions on all levels. I just hope they give you multiple player options in this one like DMC3SE...

I would assume that because xbox has SKU without harddrive, they can't force xbox version to install, right? Interesting, I do like the 60fps idea, NG is doing it, why can't DMC?
am I the only one confused about the whole 4 frames thing?
still no timeline for the release. *sighs*

So less loading times than the 360 version, and no need to swap discs? Count me in.

The level design looks nothing like DMC 3 goth style which sucks, looks like DMC1 level disigns upgraded.
I'll buy it used for the PS3

With this appearing on a regular DVD-9 for Xbox 360, I'm wondering what advantage they're taking of Blu-ray. 1080p textures? Uncompressed audio? Extra levels? Extra characters? A remake of Devil May Cry 2? The installation option is pretty cool too... I believe that there are no 360 games that allow this apart from Final Fantasy XI, as it REQUIRES the hard drive to function (as it does on PS2). Guess we'll have to wait until the release date gets closer for some answers. The achievements on the 360 version are probably going to be horrible anyways.... "S-rank on all levels on Dante Must Die... 20" You know it will happen.
