RUMOR: Next year may see release of PS-3lite
Do you get it? The 3 is like a backwards "E"... a PS3 Elite might be in the works. Ken Kutaragi hinted that he's not quite done with PlayStation yet, already having envisioned the fourth, fix, and sixth PlayStation consoles. However, another one of those tricky anonymous sources, some kind of Sony insider, has reported that the fourth PlayStation may appear as early as next year. This new console won't exactly be new... it's got the same chip set as the PS3, but will feature modifications in the "drive bay" and "attachment areas". We've got no idea what that means -- perhaps a second HDMI port so you can separate the audio and visual signals? Maybe a 5-disc Blu-ray player so you never have to change games? We've got no idea, but if it's some kind of PS3+, we're going stand right here and look at it... we're not prepared to drop another $600 clams.

let's be clear before fanboys flood in:
the news is from: " an unnamed "Sony insider" has reportedly claimed that a new PlayStation could be available next year"
That's as credible Barry Bonds on Steroid hearing.
now, what are we talking about again?

Cable/video in ports
Larger drive
Faster Blu-ray
2 hdmi ports
kingofwale @ May 3rd 2007 6:16PM
@Colin
if we are going with what I want for PS3 Lite in 2 years.
*Rumble feature added
*2 HDMI port
*bigger harddrive (I know I can replace them, I jsut don't want to, just throw in a 256 please)
*some kind of FF series branding would be awesome
*upscaling for all DVD movies and PS1/PS2 games

I wouldn't mind this. My PS3 is staying here when I go off to college so getting a better one in a year wouldn't upset me.
Dreadhead541 @ May 3rd 2007 6:49PM
i thought you meant ps3-lite like the ds lite
Geoff Gibson @ May 3rd 2007 7:03PM
Just make it smaller!
In terms of video game consoles, larger not does equate to better.
Also with the smaller part, lets hope its also cheaper. :)
massive_98 @ May 3rd 2007 7:31PM
Faster loading times would be great but imposible.
All I want is GTA:IV and MERCS:2
Jeremy @ May 3rd 2007 9:24PM
I also read the title as PS3 lite instead of PS3 Elite. That makes a big difference.
I'd say the Elite probably features a second HDMI and maybe a BluRay burner.

Why do people want a smaller console? Are you guys holding the things while you play them?

Small console most likely implys small processor, which implies less power/heat.
so yeah, I wouldn't mind having a 65nm there. save me some money while I help save the world with Folding@Home. ;)

If an updated PS3 comes out with AppleTV-like functionality and a larger hard drive, count me in. It seems that would make it the ultimate 'must-have-device' for both gaming and home theatre. My guess would be that, if there's any credibility to this rumour, Sony will wait until the prices of PS3 components drop before trying to release something like this for nine-thousand dollars.
recon @ May 3rd 2007 10:32PM
Nick, dont ever associate anything PS3 with anything Xbox. ever! Now have a good day.
Lithium @ May 3rd 2007 11:50PM
here's my predictions / guesses:
rumble will be added when they want. you don't need an newer version of a ps3 to do it. just new sixaxis'
faster bluray drive
probably a bigger HDD, 150gb+
a smaller ps3? maybe slightly but I doubt it. they will more likely fit in more input or output connections and maybe another drive bay or whatever they can to make it better.
2 HDMI connections... I don't think so. Am I missing something or what, but why would you need 2. The quality is pretty darn good, why bother to split the A and the V? It's already pure digital and they don't interfere with each other when only using one cable.
IR port would be good and cheap to add. one more way the psp could connect/control the ps3. regular remotes could work too.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is no new version anytime soon. At least a significantly new version that is actually different to the end user and not just a chip change. They should be working hard on dropping the price.

All this second edition thing is really annoying. I mean we who are the early adopters and who helped Sony to establish a consumer base for PS3 will face the tough dilemma of being deprived of some goodies or buying another console if we want to have some really good enhancements? The faster blu-ray would be great, the second HDMI is a must if you want to buy a hdmi enabled amplifier at some point in the future. And of course we would like a smaller processor! But how? Are we supposed to buy 2, 3 consoles in this PS life cycle?
sam-evans @ May 3rd 2007 11:56PM
White and Silver?
Bigger Hard Drive?
More USB Ports?
Wireless n?
h0mi @ May 4th 2007 12:50AM
Why would you want/need 2 HDMI ports?
I'd like to see this result in a price drop but it wouldnt be significant enough to convince me to pick one up, unless those additional features
Steven Kreschollek @ May 4th 2007 1:18AM
This rumor was already debunked by Sony this afternoon. They clearly stated "Obviously, this is garbage." Linky - http://www.n4g.com/industrynews/News-37669.aspx
Havic @ May 4th 2007 4:20AM
IT wouldn't be a NEW Playstation just a smaller PS3,
We saw it with PSone and the Slimline PS2, only logical the same will happen with PS3.
Carlton @ May 4th 2007 6:13AM
"I'd say the Elite probably features a second HDMI and maybe a BluRay burner."
Second HDMI? Sure. BluRay burner? Are you tripping? What possible logic could there be for making it easier for people to rip games? Not to mention the fact that they cost a fortune, there is no real demand, and I can't see any benefit for sony.
"Small console most likely implys small processor, which implies less power/heat."
Sorry dude, but why would a small console imply a small processor? The cell really doesn't take up much space inside the unit. Half of the space is taken up by the internal power pack.
And I agree, it does look like it says PS3 lite.
haywood jablomey @ May 4th 2007 10:00AM
@20. Agreed.
blasphemizer @ May 4th 2007 12:35PM
no blu ray = cheaper price = sony climbing out of the toilet
Hatch @ May 4th 2007 8:44PM
what's the fix playstation??
