What happens when a PlayStation 3 dies
Sony's launch of the PlayStation 3 may not have been perfect, but one of the things they've been praised for was rolling out hundreds of thousands of PS3s that actually worked. A bit of a rarity with console launches...Unfortunately, like all pieces of hardware, PlayStation 3s do occasionally shuffle off this mortal coil and go up to the big Fry's in the sky. Games Radar has the tragic story of one such PS3 that not only decided to die, but also decided to eat the poor owner's copy of Oblivion as well. Sony came through though, getting him a working PS3 in fairly short order and even rescuing his copy of Oblivion from ... uh ... oblivion.
It's great to know that Sony will work with their customers to replace broken PS3s quickly and efficiently. Personally though, I hope that is a part of their customer service I never have to experience myself.

What's up with the gruesome picture? According to the story, he heard a pop and it shut off. It didn't catch fire and cause all holy hell.

is the above the 'real' picture?? I question that, a 'pop' doesn't mean 'meltdown'
and I find this quote from the source a bit funny.
>The user is browsing the internet on the PS3 when a loud POP...
See!!! THis would NEVER HAPPEN on xbox. No, not because xbox won't overheat or die of early death, just that xbox can't browse the internet. ;)

My PS3 wifi died and Sony told me to take it to EB and they swapped it for a brand new one the same day...

My nephews, who are 5 and 6, have a PS3 that is on, all day, and has been for the past 3 months. When I was visiting and wanted to play, I asked Sam where the heck the controller was.
Here! He says, from the kitchen. He pulls it out of some mac and cheese and I wipe it off and start playing.
It's also fortunate that blu-ray has that bizarre thick coating. It's like some kind of plastic gravy.
Everything still works.
Of course, the big-wheels in the yard all have holes in the tires...
On weekends, my PS3 goes on about 8 am and stays on until midnight.
Of course, my house being the 'ultimate' bachelor pad, the ps3 is sitting on an empty milk-crate, next to the tv. Talk about air circulation.

The sight of that melted plastic makes me want to vomit. Anytime I see imaged of melted plastic I think of when I lit a G.I.Joe on fire when I was a kid. The smell haunts my dreams...

Also,., does anyone know where I can find a cheap headset for my PS3?

Here's my PS3 exchange story, which, in my opinion, is a little more impressive than that guys story.
After a few weeks of owing my launch day ps2 it decided to start making a hining noise. Theres been quite a few posts about ps3's having the same problem. Its no big deal but its annoying.
I decided to call Sony UK and within 5 minutes they had arranged for a brand new PS3 to be delivered to my doorstep the VERY NEXT DAY.
They would perform a straight swap there and then. My PS3 for the brand new one, at no cost.
Thats exactly what they did.
Customer Service does not get any better! Next day courier delivered ps3 straight to your door.

I do not find that turnaround impressive. I got the same 2 week turnaround when my 360 died last year. Plus Sony did not swap his HD. I would have been pissed to lose 30 plus hours of Oblivion. If the HD dies, that is one thing, I could understand losing your saves but not if it some other hardware failure. These company should be able to do a lot better than this. When I have laptops die, they are fixed in a few days by the manufacturer like Dell not weeks. Both Sony and MS need to do better.

Its so different with the same article from different posts. 360'ers really know how to fight, beg and whine.
