HGZine mag scores exclusive Wipeout Pulse preview

And everyone benefits. HGZine's latest issue is filled with some incredible features, but the one that tops it all is their cover feature: Wipeout Pulse. Reading through the media-heavy PDF can cause some older machines to chug, but we have to admit that we were impressed with this month's offerings. Learning more about the subtle control changes to Pulse is certainly worthwhile, and their feature on "the 10 best games you've never played" is certainly appreciated. Best of all? It's free.

Just to point out that the Magazines from Cranberry Publishing (like this) are advertorials meaning they feature paid stories (ie Wipeout paid for the 'feature').

That being said...I'm buying.

No, just to clarify, our magazines aren't advertorials. They are funded by advertising, as in fact are all magazines, digital or print. If we have a piece of editorial that is funded, then we mark it as advertorial (see amBX in issue 4 of PCGZine).

WipEout, for example, wasn't paid for as it is not marked as such. We aim to be as transparent as possible with readers, as we have all got a lot of experience in print magazines, so we translate that need to be clear with what is funded and what isn't into our digital magazines.

The 'Wipeout paid for the feature' was an EXAMPLE of what could be in your magazine, not a statement of fact, that is why it is in brackets. More important to what I said is: "they feature paid stories" which is absolutely correct.

Any magazine that creates/accepts advertorials is a bit rubbish.

OK, maybe I am not being clear or I am misunderstanding, for which I apologise. Editorial is editorial in the magazines, just as it is in a print magazine. It is not paid for.

Advertising in the magazines is advertising - it's easy to spot, as it's the pages that are adverts. These pay for the magazines, just like the ads on web pages pay for the web pages and the ads in print magazines pay for the paper.

In the middle ground, both online and offline, is something called Advertorial, which is basically a piece, normally a page, written in the style of the magazine and paid for by a company. It's a very popular advertising method in Women's magazines, like Marie Claire and Cosmo. Advertorials do also exist in specialist press (games, technology, etc). GamerZines have to date featured 2 advertorials if memory serves: 1 for amBX and 1 for Creative Labs, both in PCGZine.

By contrast, we do feature more advertising, roughly 4-6 ad pages a month out of total of about 36 pages/issue. This is actually a considerably lower ad/ed ratio than print magazines.
