Gamestop says no Metal Gear Solid 4 until 2008
Uh oh. Looks like gaming behemoth Gamestop/EB Games is sending a dreaded email to gamers who preordered Metal Gear Solid 4. According to an email sent earlier today, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots been delayed from its tenative September 1st, 2007 date and is now expected March 1st, 2008. This isn't the first time a high-profile title hits a sudden postponement, but we were gearing up in anticipation for this title to hold us over through the holidays. Without the hugely anticipated title expected until 2008, it could cause Santa's little helpers to drop off something else under the tree. Lets all hope this one doesn't quite pan out as the email indicates.

Looks like IGN was right then they said they had a feeling this would happen. Plus I have to say that it really is not that big of a shock I do not want a rushed game any way.
Toby @ May 14th 2007 5:00PM
I agree with Joe, im all about MGS being perfect. ID rather have to wait a few more months than have something that looks and plays beneath a previous MGS
jason @ May 14th 2007 5:13PM
360 exclusives expected this coming this summer/fall:
Halo 3
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Too Human pt.1
PGR3
Forza Motorsport 2
GTA IV(with exclusive content)
The next Splinter Cell
blue dragon
lost odyssey
ps3's:
Killzone 2 maybe this year
Ratchet and Clank maybe this year
Lair
Heavenly Sword
GTA IV(exclusive content)
My point is this hurts ps3 if its true
Moe @ May 14th 2007 5:14PM
PGR3 again? omigod!
Hyper C @ May 14th 2007 5:18PM
This is proabably for the better. I don't think they have anymore relative "sub" words to attach to the title, so they gotta get right the first time.
And yeah, Wii will be taking over this xmas. No amount of copy and paste shooters or 250 hour RPGs are gonna knock out Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros., Metroid Prime 3, Nights or Mario Party 8 (and those are just the blockbusters).
Keep on delaying Sony, we all know 2008 is your year anyway.

Dolla Dolla @ May 14th 2007 5:29PM
I wasn't expecting MGS4 to come out until 08 anyway. But this definitely does hurt the exclusive titles coming to the PS3 in 07.
apease @ May 14th 2007 6:00PM
With all due respect, the first rule of release dates is the retailers don't know squat. Evidence: Multiple release dates every year for Duke Nukem: Forever. Further evidence: Any high-profile game ever, pretty much.
Now, this isn't to say MGS 4 won't get delayed, everyone's been expecting it. But this is more likely a cya for Gamestop since they're finally catching on to what everyone else has been saying for a year now. Or, I guess it's possible a Japanese game studio told no one but one American game retailer about the delay... okay, no.
thatpspkid @ May 14th 2007 6:06PM
So what. is just one game. there are plenty more awesome exclusives coming before this year ends.
BTW: Jason do you own a PS3?
MrSkip @ May 14th 2007 6:23PM
Hey #3 even if they had 100 exclusives most people won't be able to enjoy them when you have a system that is broken 2/3 of the year.
kingofwale @ May 14th 2007 6:25PM
never thought the new MGS game is in store for Christmas in the first place, that'd be like me saying that FFXIII will come out this year.
Nothing will get the Japanese market excited unitl DMC comes out.
as for US market, nothing will catch up to Halo 3, Sony will just need to keep pace this year.
acedoh @ May 14th 2007 6:43PM
This should have been pretty obvious to most. This is a high profile title and probably will be one of the biggest releases for the next three years. It makes sense that they are delaying it. To perfect a game it takes time and this game will take time. Don't be surprised if it doesn't release until late 2008.
thatpspkid @ May 14th 2007 6:48PM
Halo is probably one of the most overrated games ever. I play it with my friends online and Its great and all but just because the Halo franchise kept the Xbox alive, it does not mean that it is this great game that will beat and outsell every other game out there. I bet anyone that it won't sell more than those(god dam same ass game as all before) DS POKEMON game.
Spoiler for Pokemon DS: you are going to collect some lame badges and catch like 300 Pokemons. Don't forget to pick between the first three basic Pokemons.
Spoiler for Halo 3: BOOM HEAD SHOT!!! BOOM HEADSHOT!!! BOOOOOM HEADSHOT..........
What does Halo do so great that any other great FPS does not?
P.S. If Master chief took of his helmet and revealed that it was a very hot chick and started dancing with Samus in a lesbo sort of way, then Halo would be the greatest game ever. lol Haloid
Strike Man @ May 14th 2007 7:22PM
"What does Halo do so great that any other great FPS does not? "
Sell approximately 2.4 million copies in a single day (Halo 2).
People can all bitch and moan all they want that Halo doesn't have the graphics of Rainbow Six or the overall awesomeness of Half-Life 2, but the end result is, it sells really well. REALLY well. You may not care for it, but every Joe Six-Pack that owns an XBOX and buys three games each year (two of them always starting with the words "Grand Theft Auto" and "Madden"), will pick up this game en masse.
Back on topic, while I'd LOVE to play MGS4 as soon as possible, I'd much rather see it delayed (assuming the EBGames.com info is reliable) than released in an unfinished state. I have no doubt that it'll be a (flawed) masterpiece, just like the previous titles, and I'll find it more than worth the wait when it finally arrives.
thatpspkid @ May 14th 2007 7:41PM
yes we all know that everyone likes it, and if you own an xbox you probably own halo, but-
selling 2.4 mill in a day was not the kind of answer I was looking for.
I would of accepted:
A. Its like Mario for nintendo
B. There is just something about it that I just can't explain.
or even
C. It just goes great with bear and a couple of buddies.
Sorry, next contestant.
Dahk @ May 14th 2007 7:42PM
Very true. In the end, it doesn't matter if the individual parts of a game make Halo successful. There's a frickin huge fanbase, and that'll be the reason of undoubted success of Halo 3.
And yeah lol @ Haloid.
Again back on topic, MGS4 was never determined to be on September 1, 2007. It was just put there temporarily along with the rest of the games that didn't have any sort of announcement, except that it'd be within 2007. So realistically, that meant late 2007, and again as everyone said, i'd rather them delay it a few months to perfect it. Because really, it IS arguably the most anticipated PS3 title and so perfection is definitely in order.
Craig Ehlo @ May 14th 2007 8:04PM
I haven't touched my ps3 in months for gaming. It's just a Blu-Ray play to me these days. MGS was by far the biggest game I was waiting for on the system as well. Way to drop the ball Sony.

Halo 3 in my point of view and many others has the best online set up matchmaking and clan party matches that are ranked which I am not sure if you have tried all the online gametypes cuz there are alot and played online using matchmaking cuz you can get into games very quickly. Also there are still many hundreds of thousands of people playing halo 2 online still. Right now though I am mad at bungie cuz I can't play online matchmaking since the new maps came out cuz I can't redownload them to fix the bugs in it. From what I am reading in your post you haven't played through both the campaigns of HALO 1 AND 2 cuz it was a single player game first and multiplayer game second cuz it is a trilogy. The HALO 3 multiplayer is only going to get better it will get online co op and i believe now you have the option to look for people in your rank zone to play an oline match with which sounds pretty sweet, also you can veto a matchmaking gametype/map if you and others don't like it which is cool. I don't own a ps3 but I have played a couple of games for it and I will buy one way way in to the future cuz the price is just so high right know and I don't see them lowering it dramatically since they lose so much money from it.
kingofwale @ May 14th 2007 8:16PM
@Craig Ehlo
yeah, because apparently Sony is responsible for anything Konami does with its OWN game, right?
Way to pretend to be a PS3 owner. nice try, because NOBODY ever done that before. ;)
Ben @ May 14th 2007 8:18PM
This is good, at least for me. Now I can save for my 360 this summer, and then next summer I'll save for a PS3 and MGS4.
thatpspkid @ May 14th 2007 8:25PM
Yeah I played trough the campaigns, and they are all right, not the best story (MGS's story is pretty kick ass if you get into it), but whatever the game is fun. But like you said what keeps them coming back for more is the online. That is Halo basically.
If they pulled a Warhawk on Halo after the 3rd one would anyone care? I could see it. Online is its best selling point if you ask me.
Same thing for MGS. The online is great and all and I would be pissed if they did not added one for 4, but would it really matter as long as the single player kicked ass?(It always does btw)
You know... I guess what I am trying to say here is that if penguins could fly, then why couldn't birds swim, you feel me???
Faraz M. @ May 14th 2007 8:27PM
oh wow, to me (dont own a PS3) MGS4 for ps3 is like halo 3 for 360... i am a fanboy but buy like a average person. i jus wanna say that i am glad that i don't own a ps3 cause to be honest... from what my friends tell me, it is just a shiny box in the living room because all of the games suck.
LET ME TELL YOU GUYS SOMETHING... cut your losses, get a 360, and reserve halo 3 and anyother game that you want...you won't be sorry cause everntually MGS4 will come out for 360... they need to make money somehow haha
thatpspkid @ May 14th 2007 8:33PM
lol @ 21.
you know it ain't true when they pull the ol' "its only a blu ray player" line.
Hilarious
mccomber @ May 14th 2007 10:06PM
That hurts if true, no two ways about it. Heavenly Sword and Lair will HAVE to deliver at that point, with Home and Ratchet&Clank running a pretty good race as well. There are a handful of other titles that may deliver as well (uncharted seems to be under the radar for some reason), but we need games for the holidays that will get the attention of the public and make them want a ps3 under the tree. If the 360 has a huge holiday season but the ps3 doesn't, it will be damn hard to get out of that hole.
Then again, several sites are still listing a q4 2007 date, so we'll have to wait and see. Fingers crossed...
massive_98 @ May 14th 2007 10:20PM
I would rather have a rushed game then a late game. Sony needs to sell consoles over the holidays. Even a shitty version of MGS will do that.
Ben @ May 14th 2007 10:38PM
But massive_98, what happens when everybody realizes that MGS4 is bad? No good press, or good anything could come from Sony pressuring Konami to rush it. It is arguably going to be the system seller for the PS3, as Faraz. M said, it's like the PS3's Halo3. And to rush it would be idiotic. And to be happy that they rushed it just so you could play it earlier, even if it sucks more, is even more idiotic.

@26
You're right, it is a Blu Ray player, but it also plays DVDs, where the 360 only plays DVDs.
Jon @ May 15th 2007 1:27AM
PS3 really cannot afford to have no established major AAA title to carry it through the winter. Both the Wii and Xbox 360 are unleashing some of their top titles this year. The 360 is growing an amazingly impressive library and all of the "side features" like Xbox Live video marketplace and Xbox Live arcade are blowing Sony and Nintendo out of the water. If the Xbox 360 has a $50-99 price cut I think it's the beginnings of the death toll for the PS3.
The Wii is canobolizing the PS3 in Japan and both Nintendo and Microsoft are having their way with Sony here in the states and Europe.
I really think Blu-Ray may be in some serious trouble as well if the PS3 continues to fail as a gaming platform.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 15th 2007 2:53AM
"Way to pretend to be a PS3 owner. nice try, because NOBODY ever done that before. ;)"
You would know. You're the same guy who spent entry after entry getting bombarded by me and other people for talking about something you know nothing about, aka Wii, and after finally catching a huge amount of flack and flames for doing so, you miraculously start talking about how you bought a Wii for your girlfriend, and spent a lot of time playing it. Funny how it never came up until things reached a breaking point for you.

Obviously you have not played Rainbow six. The graphics are HORRIBLE!!! What makes that game great is the gameplay and teamwork.

I understand why Xbots troll this site, I guess. No, I take that back. I have no idea why they're here.
Spring of '08?
That sucks, big time. Sure, it'll be a better game, sure, the programmers are wrapping themselves around how they're going to get this thing to meet Sony's standards...
But why not give a great game experience in 720p/1080i (for those whose monitors are either 480p or 1080i) by holiday of '07? And then come out with a new one, having learned the system, in spring of '09?
Having seen what they've shown us, it's hard to care.
So I get a game that is various shades of green/brown.
I got that with Resistance, which is cool, because it works, the storyline is great, the online is amazing...
But if you're going to make us wait, why are you just giving us more greens and greys, in higher definition?
I think this is a dumb move, on Sony's part. It's only going to appeal to hardcore gamers.
That said, I've barely played any of the Metal Gear franchise.
So maybe I just don't get it.
John @ May 15th 2007 11:39PM
oh, btw, faraz m is a plant. Planted by Microsoft, watered regularly. Must be nice. If I didn't have a regular, good-paying job, maybe I'd be a HO too, like him/her.
Tiberius Jones @ May 21st 2007 2:37PM
The Halo series is no more overrated than the MGS series. Set aside your fanboyism for a moment and admit that MGS from the beginning is more movie than game. It's always been that way since PS1. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because the storie is usually interesting enough to at least keep you engaged, and sometimes downright enthralling. But there are always points in every MGS game, where you go "OK, I just want to skip all this movie crap and get back to actually PLAYING!"
Halo single player is overrated I think. The ending of Halo2 was about as disappointing as any game ending ever has been. Halo 1 was better because it was so new and it was so much better graphically than ANYTHING on the planet at the time; even the most jaded Sony fan couldn't play Halo without being impressed, and at least a little jealous.
Online though, Halo sets the standard for matchmaking. I LOVE GRAW2 online as well as Gears of War, Dead or Alive and most of my sports games (especially MLB2k7) but none of those games makes it easier and more intuitive to get in the kind of game I want with the kinds of players I want than does Halo.
Honestly, the one thing Microsoft could do to make Xbox Live even better than it already is is to require all online games to have a matchmaking system as well-designed as Halo's.
There is something to be said for Halo's mechanics too. When you play online and you run head to head against someone and you bash him in the face with your weapon, something about it just feels right. It's hard to explain, but no other game I've ever played online (and I've played 'em ALL) quite does it as well as Halo.
BTW, I won a 360 and Owned a PS3. I sold my PS3 a couple months ago. Got sick of waiting for games to come out in 2008. I liked it the first couple weeks I had it. The GT demo and Resistance kept me occupied for a little while. But then they got old, Motorstorm was utterly disappointing and anything else worth having (LAIR? blech!) won't be out until at LEAST 2008.
At that point it actually made me angry to look at the PS3 console everyday. This mammoth black box sitting on my desk taking up space without delivering anything to make it worthy of it's place next to my Xbox 360. I bought one Blu-Ray movie - Invinceable. Honestly it didn't look much better than regular DVD. Not enough so to make it a selling point, that's for sure. So, I listed on EBAY, sold it for $800 with the games and movie and put the money towards a new gaming PC.
Holidays 2008, when (if) the PS3 finally has some compelling software AND a significant pricedrop, I will consider buying one then.
But right now, you ahve to be a major Sony Fanboy or Sony Drone or just plain stupid to think the PS3 is a btter gamning system than the Xbox 360 RIGHT NOW and for the remainder of 2007.
Beyond that we'll see. But right now Xbox 360 is the clear best of class. The Wii doesn't even count...it's not in the same class as either the PS3 or 360.
Scott @ May 22nd 2007 5:22PM
Did everyone forget about War Hawk?
