Rumor: Full list of updates for firmware 2.00 released?
One of the regular posters on the official PlayStation Boards recently posted a supposed leak of the full list of updates for the PlayStation 3 release of firmware 2.00. The poster has a pretty high-level of 'forum street cred,' having released information on previous firmware releases that turned out to be valid, but we're still a little skeptical. After the initial posting, she and SCEA edited her post to nothingness - but SCEA has allowed the quoted firmware update features to stay up in the replies. The source of the list was suppose to have come from a Sony Press Site which required credentials - info not there anymore. Unfortunately, no time frame given for release of the update, but it's implied that it's soon.Major updates:
- XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is now accessible during gameplay. [No further information given.]
- Wallpaper feature has been added.

sucks for Sony now because not only do they have to deliver this update but they have to deliver it soon.
Although if they deliver it, I'll trade my 360 in.
alphaVI @ May 14th 2007 6:47AM
Most of these changes make sense, but some sound too good to be true!
ck @ May 14th 2007 6:47AM
Why would you trade your 360 in for this update? Some of that stuff is cool, bot nothing there is a dealbreaker.
frankenwookie @ May 14th 2007 6:58AM
The method of selecting an output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
Does this mean that we can now choose multiple resolution like 1366 x 768, 1680 x 1050 etc...........
Macrike @ May 14th 2007 7:02AM
Fake. I said it on the official boards, and I say it here.
- There is no sign of the press release on that extranet.
- The original message of Leah has gone.
- If it was true, all the press would have recieved the press release.
- I've never seen SOny doing a press release about a firmware.
- The list is just too good to be true.
ck @ May 14th 2007 7:09AM
Sounds more like a leak that was quickly (and badly) hushed up, than a fake.
All I want is the ability to stream off an SMB share instead of off a USB device. That other stuff can wait.

A lot of those things make sense.. its crasy that Zoom isnt even a function in the photo viewer.. PSP has had that from the get go. And, hope they add a more self contained audio plater.
apease @ May 14th 2007 8:20AM
The only thing that really excites me is the hint that ps/ps2 games will get some enhancements... if it's anti-aliasing and better texture filtering at HD resolutions, then I'm VERY excited indeed.
And if this is a fake, someone is fluent in Sony pr-speak, it's a first-rate job. And it's got the random "Why the heck did they spend time doing that" features that I've come to know and love from Sony, such as secure delete and zero unused disk space. Why? Is one of the firmware developers downloading a bunch of pr0n on his ps3 and doesn't want anyone to find out? The list really isn't all that hot... the only really big thing explicitly listed is something that was promised before the ps3 launched, xmb access during gameplay.
As for the rest of the press not getting this, sometimes people accidentally post stuff ahead of time. I'm not saying this firmware update is for real, but it's not unlikely at all. The final feature list might even have a couple changes by the time it's released.
dontlikeitmodit @ May 14th 2007 8:33AM
I think they have been doing a great job with the updates. If this one turns out to be true I will be happy. I like to use my PS3 as my living room browser and with reso changes, RSS feeds, and XMB in game this will mean less trips to my computer room.
It does seem very strange the items they choose to implement with the updates as 'apease' has stated. I can only speculate that some things we would really like to see are being reserved for the "home" release.
Also if you drop down all the features that just means that you are giving your competition a chance to implement them quickly too.
If it is fake the original creator needs a poo taken on their head.....
Macrike @ May 14th 2007 9:17AM
@Anthony,
The news is from this morning. I'd like to know what you consider "fresh news" if this is already old news for you.
Maybe you can do it better? I don't think so.
Nav @ May 14th 2007 9:26AM
Hm... I don't even own a PS3 yet, and I'm sorta' excited about this. Even though they've just lifted a lot from the PSP, it seems like this just makes the PS3 more desirable. The RSS feature means that you can use the PS3 as a pod/vodcast catcher - you could even then copy stuff to your PSP to take on the go. I was hoping they would add a feature to rip music in lossless to further the idea of the PS3 being the media centre of your living room, but no dice. The rest sounds like minor but cool improvements that won't make any difference individually, but seem beneficial as a whole.
Now, how to scrape together $700 on a TA's salary?
Noshino @ May 14th 2007 9:30AM
mm...Leah...as stated by Colin she does have forum cred, she has gotten "secret" info before which ended up being true, so I guess I ll also go ahead and believe her this time...
Tim Parsons @ May 14th 2007 9:50AM
Sweet, PLAY B3YOND!!
OrganicShadow @ May 14th 2007 9:50AM
To look at this from a pessimistic standpoint, they DID say that a good deal of these features would be in the 1.5 or 1.6 updates, so some of these features have been pushed back a few times, and may not even make v2.00.
Then again, it IS a big round number, so for all we know they could bide their time with more incremental numbered updates and whenever they get the meat of this list done they just call it v2.00.
A lot of these features get me excited because I didn't really see any need for them until I saw the list. Like the file sort options or the playing video files sequentially. Those are pretty cool and at least show that Sony isn't going to just sit and let a lot of smaller features be awkward and dumb. Sure, there's a whole lot more in that respect that they need to fix, but at least we know they're paying attention to all of the PS3's aspects instead of just a few. If they only focused on gaming-related bugs/features/etc. then it would make a lot of people feel like the other features were a waste.
I just pray to my many norse scandinavian heathen devil she-bitchin' gods and godesses that they make the Wallpaper feature happen this time....for realsies.
alienclay @ May 14th 2007 10:26AM
bout' time they got that file sorting done. anyone with sizeable music collections on their ps3 knows the issues there.
as a big psp user from launch, the very first thing that bugged me about the ps3 and the xmb on it was that it didn't measure up in many respects to the way the psp took care of things over a year ago. i know gettign the console out in the wild was far more important than say, photo zoom but come on. how hard was that to implement? really?
hope this comes soon. even if this is fake, these are all things i'm sure sony will be putting out int the near future (like 3-4 months, and before home).
i do have one question though,... will we be able to listen to music during gameplay like on 360? or will the xmb have to be up to enjoy it?
jaysins @ May 14th 2007 10:32AM
Updates have done added a ton of more value to the 360 and made it a better system and more capable system and media hub overall. It's good to see Sony not content with being out done. This Sony MS competition in my opinion is the best thing to happen to console gamers in a long time. Because let's face it, neither company would be letting the consumer rape them like they currently are if it wasn't for the stiff competition. We buy the consoles for less than it cost them to make it, get lots of free content in games and console enhancements and even more innovation out of them as they duel to the death. Even though I prefer xbox, I like what Sony is doing and what they are starting to do. Keep the heat coming Sony.
bxbailey @ May 14th 2007 11:00AM
because I haven't played my 360 since 11/17/06
Kspraydad @ May 14th 2007 11:52AM
Anthony...
Did you not promise last week in another thread to start your own blog instead of posting here? What is the URL please.

"shit or get off the pot"
You don't even know what that saying means do you?
My 2 cents? The features look legit but the version numbering seems suspect. I have it on good authority that the next update will in fact be 1.8 then 1.9 and then 2.0 rather than jumping straight to 2.0
I doubt a list of 2.0 features would exist until they'd got the other 2 out of the way...
NATO_Duke @ May 14th 2007 1:31PM
I dont see anything here to get really excited about. Those who are that excited - are you desperate for anything at this point? All I want are som nice games damn it.
Titty Pink @ May 14th 2007 2:24PM
I dunno Duke, people have done some pretty amazing things w/ PSPs and the basic Xbox. The media system is so good on the 360 because of updates, BUT the original build copied so much from "homebrew" stuff that it was ridiculous. It took about a year before the 360 could compete w/ a good hacked Xbox, but someone at MS was impressed by the underground scene, at least enough to build some of the concepts into the 360. I guess the bottom line is there are many known limfacs to the PS3 OS that seem like they should have come out of the box, this is exciting because the improvements listed here are very feasible...

Still no upscaling?
tibbar110 @ May 14th 2007 4:51PM
I hope it finally upscales from 720p to 1080i.

WENS THE UPDATE COMING OUT
Mark @ May 14th 2007 5:16PM
I just want upscaling for PS2 games and Dvds.
Toby @ May 14th 2007 6:40PM
The girl who posted that originally came abck and said someone hacked her account and the whole update is a fraud. =(
Laurens Holst @ May 14th 2007 9:49PM
Could…
* The method of selecting an output resolution has been changed in [Video Output Settings] under [Display Settings].
* Support for PLAYSTATION®3 format software titles has been expanded.
…mean that I can now play all my PAL software on my NTSC machine and vice versa?
That would surely be really nice.
EvoAnubis @ May 14th 2007 11:06PM
This is badass, if true. i wonder when it'll be come available?
vizunary @ May 14th 2007 11:23PM
Like 30, I really want DVD and PS2 upscaling more than anything else. I can't stand watching reg DVDs anymore, but I can't bring myself to buy another DVD player(I've got 4, plus the PS3)... rest of this stuff looks pretty cool though.
Jon @ May 15th 2007 1:47AM
Wow that's allot of updates for just a few months. They sure rushed this thing out the door. PS3 seems to be getting closer and closer to Xbox 360 features every update.
Now if only they released some good games sometime before the fall.
grass @ May 15th 2007 6:22PM
Gotta believe this info, it's pretty monumental as well. If it is a lie, that would be an extreme dissapointment...but like someone said, now Sony HAS to to an update of this nature lol. The theme settings are necessary, photo customization, photo avatars, backgrounds/wallpapers...shit, and the XMB access. If it is true, how restricted will the XMB be, if it's restricted at all. I find it hard to believe I'd be able to go from the motorstorm game lobby, to a chat to invite some folks on. I dunno, maybe it is all possible. ps3, woot woot.
ekbigpimping @ May 15th 2007 10:10PM
finally i can play mp3s while in gameplay
