Jack Tretton says PS3 cost levied by abundance of planned content
Jack Tretton admitted the high price point of the PS3 console can prove a worthy "challenge," but he firmly believes the content lined up will justify its cost. A quick viewing of hot titles shown at Sony Gamers Day '07 should easily solidify his claim. He also projected a boost in PS3 sales over the next few months, stemming from the upcoming releases of a few stellar triple-A titles. While no specifics were mentioned by Mr. Tretton, we've got a pretty good idea what those triple-A games might be, judging from the mass of excellent footage from titles we've seen coming from SGD '07. We're most excited about the implementation of Home and titles like Eye of Judgement, Heavenly Sword and Uncharted. After checking out all of our extensive SGD '07 coverage, what triple-A titles are you looking forward to the most?

"Triple A" titles? Come on. These games hardly deserve that, these are just the games we get till 2008.
Killzone 2, GTAIV, MGS4, GT5, VF5. Those are triple A titles.
Sony's "Gamer's Day" just reminded me how far off 2008 really is.
jas @ May 17th 2007 6:01PM
All gameplay previews but Drakes looked meh.
1) Socom looked like a XBOX 1 title (bad textures, animation and character models.. no self shadowing, etc.)
2) Ratchet & Clank was Kameo all over again.. not bad, but how many years have you had to get it right?
3) Heavenly Sword has reported framerate issues
Killzone and MGS4 are nowhere to be found. Good luck surviving '07 PS3!!!
If Sony didn't have any other revenue to fall back on, it WOULD BE TODAY'S DREAMCAST.
Vincent060 @ May 17th 2007 6:19PM
@jas
What was wrong with Ratchet & Clank? It's WAY better then Kameo. All the unique weapons allows people to play any way they want. Kameo is nothing compared to Ratchet & Clank.
WhackMushroom @ May 17th 2007 6:23PM
i was going to say femme of war 3 but now after seeing the footage for uncharted i cant wait to have my mind blown to bits.
Tyler @ May 17th 2007 7:42PM
@4 Agreed Ratchet and Clank wins their games are always great
As for the Jack Tretton thing...just cut the price I dunno.. I agree that the PS3 is getting some good stuff but for the love of god, dont make excuses, we all want to see a price cut

"3) Heavenly Sword has reported framerate issues"
What? Where did you read this? It looked pretty slick in the gameplay videos I just watched.
Stef Geiger @ May 17th 2007 8:36PM
Ugh, would people stop assuming Killzone 2 will suck because the first one wasn't that good? Think about it, it's on a new console with a new engine. Aside from the main premise and art style, the game has just as much potential as any other FPS. It's pretty stupid to assume that the game is going to be bad just because the first one was. They practically have nothing to do with each other.
Bored @ May 17th 2007 9:05PM
Not to mention, the first KillZone was rushed, not this one. Harrison was even careful enough to tone down on the hype before E3'2007.
Breeze @ May 17th 2007 9:09PM
Why are the xbots posting on this site again? Are they so pathetic that they must defend their POS system by infilitrating a PS3 site and criticizing every PS3 game that's reported on. Here's the facts:
Forza 2 looks like Ass. Halo 3 looks like Halo 2 and they still have no dedicated servers. Xbox live games are just filled with lag because Microsoft is too cheap to spring for dedicated servers, but they have no problem nickel and diming their sheep into paying a yearly fee for an inferior service they perceive to be superior.
As for comparing Ratchet and Clank to Kameo, well, here's the thing. Kameo was a POS on the 360 and R&C isn't. As for Heavenly Sword having framerate issues, you're just an xbot spreading rumors for games you've never seen, played or will buy. So please do us all a favour, xbot, and kill your pathetic self. You're a loser. Try and make something out of your life before it's over because, as we both know, it's not looking good so far.
Breeze @ May 17th 2007 9:13PM
#6,
He has no source. He's a 360 fanbot that has nothing better to do then spread FUD because his 360 and its games just don't inspire this douche bag to play them anymore. The 360 has only 1 game, Gears, and when this tool played it, he then returned to his true love, being a loser on a PS3 site.
popozao @ May 17th 2007 9:33PM
Has everyone here already forgotten about the game that made me buy PS3? Lair? That game looks like a scene from Lord of the Rings, and this is FIRST F'KIN GEN SOFTWARE!!!!111!
Kxpuc @ May 17th 2007 10:06PM
I'm being to wonder about Uncharted i might pick it up if it continues to peak my interest I'm almost to 10 physical PS3 games and at 10 if you include the PSN downloads i think i have too many PS3 games to play in any given time
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 17th 2007 10:15PM
"Ugh, would people stop assuming Killzone 2 will suck because the first one wasn't that good?"
Would people stop assuming? I'm tired of hearing "it will suck", but at the same time, I'm tired of hearing everyone else claim that the game is set to be some amazing seller on the PS3. There's only two ways to look at it. The game COULD be bad, simply because GG's track record isn't good, OR the game could be good, because after making so many bad games, GG probably got a wakeup call from Sony.
"Could" sounds a lot better than "will".
Now if you want to talk about what might happen to Killzone 2, then yeah, I think we need to be a tad realistic. This company has made one decent game, and that was KZL on the PSP. I don't think we should count the game out, but it certainly shouldn't be considered a killer app. at this point.
I still stand by my claim that the only reason Killzone gets attention is because Halo exists. Of course, when you consider how much hype the first game got versus how good the game actually was, then you have to give credit to Sony. Calling it a "Halo killer" was the smartest thing they ever did for that game. Did it fail? Yes. However, it got the name out there, and now here we are, one crappy game later, and its being hyped.
As for other games, I think we need to hold off on Lair and Heavenly Sword. As I said in another entry, the general concensus coming out of Gamer's Day is that Heavenly Sword is somewhat generic, and Lair isn't very good at all.
Let's just chill on the "this game sucks, this game rules". All we know is what's being reported.
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 17th 2007 10:22PM
P.S. I don't know about any Heavenly Sword framerate issues, but Uncharted was cut down to 720p for "framerate stability". This has been reported a few places, and if you want a source, here you go.

Hey NGG, you got a source other than Kotaku for your lair suckage tales? I know they didn't like it, but the way you state it makes it sound like a lot of people (whose opinions matter) are saying that right now... just like to see more of the comments on it, because it's one I'm looking forward to.
John @ May 18th 2007 12:17AM
I seriously doubt that all these xbots crying for a price cut are actually going to buy a ps3.
Obviously, what we're seeing here, is the moaning of people who can't afford both systems.
Some of us bought an xbox360.
Some of us bought a ps3.
Those of us who bought the ps3 do not go to the xbox site and troll it, we like our ps3, we will play the games as they come out.
Those of us who bought an xbox360 have:
1) Turned it in numerous times because it broke
2) Played fps games
3) Trolled joystiq and ps3fanboy hoping for a price-cut of Wii-proportions
I want to buy a xbox360. I want to play Forza 2 and I want to see the graphics of Gears of War, even though the storyline will be nothing like that of Resistance (which was brilliant, but you would have to be literate to understand that, you would have to have some concept of anthropology and history-- so xbots are left out-- still, though-- if the xbots would start with something simple, like say, Golden Books (they're available in the children's section of your local bookstore)-- you xbots could start reading, and when you've accomplished that, you can move on to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew (4th grade reading level) and then you can even move on to Harry Potter (8th grade)), because Resistance, like the very successful Ratchet and Clank before it, actually appealed on an intellectual level. A well-developed story-line, perfect gameplay, and a great story. Now, if you can't sit for that, please, join the army and kill people. We need that. Please supply the CEO's of this country with more dollars for their yachts.
Think I'm full of crap?
READ A BOOK.

Summa does, in fact, love the game. That being said, the reason I'm posting this link is because he also makes mention of others' complaints about the issues (namely, controls).
------------------------
Oh, and whoever said Heavenly Sword had framerate issues was actually correct. I didn't see it at first, but both Destructoid and Joystiq mentioned it. Summa (of Destructoid) said that the game actually locked up multiple times during his demo.

Can we all just get along?
I mainly a PC and Xbox360 gamer but the PS3 does have some good looking future games.
I was planning on getting a PS3 when Lair launched but I haven't been impressed by it enough to warrant a purchase of the console by itself.
FFXIII is the only other PS3 exclusive title I'm interested in ATM but I'm sure there'll be more in future.
I think I'll just wait until the games come, it's not so much the price but the lack of compelling exclusive games that puts me off buying a PS3 ATM.
mccomber @ May 18th 2007 2:41AM
Well, it sounds like Kotaku doesn't like lair, and neither do their commenters, who haven't played it. In fact, Summa seems to contradict the others; he mentions their complaints about the controls, but then says "I actually had no problem picking up and playing the game."
Then follows with these damning statements:
"And, as far as the good looks of Lair are concerned, I've never seen the game look better. The water and environment effects were nothing short of the most stunning video game graphics to date.
I was just happy to see the gameplay had finally caught up with the eye candy."
Some are hating it, others seem to like it. A lot. Guess we'll have to wait to play it for ourselves then.
As for HS... how many months are we out from release? The demo locking up sucks, but framerate issues "from time to time" in a non-final build will (hopefully) be a non-issue. Considering that was half a sentence from out of 7 paragraphs, I'd say Joystiq wasn't too put off by it. Again, Summa there seemed happy with it, once he was able to play at least.
I hate to constantly play counterpoint to what you are saying, because I do respect the majority of the comments you make here since you obviously think when you type, and often make a point.
But right now you are saying in several posts that the "general consensus" is suck, when reading about the games from more than a couple of sources seems to indicate otherwise in both cases. Not saying that they everyone is falling all over themselves about the titles, but I'd hardly call a fair amount of what's being said about these titles as anything less than positive.

"Some are hating it, others seem to like it. A lot. Guess we'll have to wait to play it for ourselves then."
Well, believe it or not, I do have some integrity to admit that I'm wrong. I mentioned this on another entry. It seems like, judging by a few other sites that were mentioned, that this could be more 50/50 than 80/20. Maybe I just happened to talk to all the negative people. Regardless, you're right. You, I, and many others won't know until it launches (unless of course its at E4A, in which case, I'll know soon enough :P).

Very true. I just wanted to give that guy/girl a source, because I know there were a few people thinking he was just being a douchebag and making up problems.

Completely understandable. I even went back to re-read what I said. But like I said, I'll admit that I'm wrong. As for the counterpoint thing, I think its fun to a degree. I mean, why else would I still be commenting if it wasn't? I like a little discussion with everything. Sadly for every few people willing to have debate/discussion, there's someone ready to attack just because they didn't like what they read.
Debate/Discussion = Good
Random Belligerent Remarks = Bad
Next-Gen-Gamer @ May 18th 2007 3:06AM
Heh, just realized something. Heavenly Sword launches prior to E4A. Well, I feel stupid.

@ #10 and #17
Whatever you may feel the PS3 lacklustre performance is of interest to more than a PS3 fanboy. This site is good place for information and discussion.
The painfull truth is the PS3 is to expensive the game development is happening to slowly and the sales are actually going into reverse.
Not fanboy comments but the current situation. Yes, it may well change but that is the deal now.
The Wii is cheap but it is last gen and a half but it has dropped by during the next gen battle and doing nicely thank you very much.
Both the 360 and PS3 have merit. Save yourself a bloodvessel and wait you will see it will all come good in the end.
My only complaint about the PS3 is the price and force feeding blu ray and trying to convince me that I need it. It is the arrogance of the PS3 not the console itself.
Alex @ May 18th 2007 12:32PM
typical of Sony during the last year "we charge you now for content/features coming out.......ummm.....sometime in the future".
Howabout you give me a rebate until you get some friggin more games out??? Or PSN working decently???
Or all the Blu-ray stuff finished???
Gereral Lysis @ May 18th 2007 1:58PM
Wow there are people doubting the next potential Socom for PS3?! That's crazy! That's blasphemy!
