PS3 sales spike on Amazon after SGD '07 event
Apparently the plethora of triple-A title announcements and jaw-dropping screen shots from SGD '07 drew up a fervor of PS3 interest for UK customers. Amazon.co.uk listed the PS3 as the coveted "most popular item." In comparison, the Xbox 360 Premium console is listed at number six, with the DS Lite "Black" at number five and the Nintendo Wii at number eight. With all the excitement over the last few days, it's good to see the PS3 install base growing with some praise and much-needed attention. So, have you hugged your PS3 today?

wever got this ngs is launching in japan in a few weeks, that will be a boost to worldwide sales, the us ngs, then e3 will be owned by sony this year, then lair a few weeks after that, then september and its all good for ps3 from then on. as long as developers deliver games when they said, ps3 is going to still be a hit.
Paul Atkinson @ May 18th 2007 7:40PM
Sorry to slightly burst the SGD 07 bubble, but I think this sales spike is partly to do with the promotional price-tag of £389.99 (plus free HDMI cable) instead of normal RRP £424.99. I think Amazon.co.uk have proved that people are hungry for the PS3 just put off by the price.
Although, SGD 07 has been very exciting, I'm looking forward to many of the games that have been talked about. This kind of positive news can only be a good thing for PS3 sales.
Either way, everyone who has seen my PS3 has left desperately wanting one, so the more people get on the PS3 bandwagon and impress their mates, the better Sony's fine console will do.
thatpspkid @ May 18th 2007 7:50PM
yeah, people seem scared to get a PS3 probably since they constantly hear people talking about 360 and even wii. every time someone is thinking of getting a system, I just tell the what I think of my ps3, show it to them, and show them a couple of pics of Home, and they are all over it.
convinced like 6 people just by telling them about Home.
Either that or they just told me yes so that I leave them alone.
bootsielon @ May 18th 2007 8:04PM
I've played the Wii, and I can wait.
I had played the 360, but I got it as a gift, yet I don't love it. It's ok, although I'm on my third one with warranty.
The first time I touched a PS3, I played Virtua Fighter 5. I know it's a multi-platform, but it was gonna be out a long time later on 360, so that, in combination with not wanting to deal with backwards compatibility issues, and the fact that I wanted some upcoming games (LBP, MGS4, FFXIII) and services (Home), sold me on it. And I love it.
Tiberius Jones @ May 18th 2007 8:19PM
@bootsielon
The PS3 DOES have backwards compatibility issues. Only a fraction of PS2/1 titles are backwards compatible.
Either way, as someone who sold my PS3 for the simple reason that there are NO GAMES for it, I am sick of Sony, their hype, and their EGO.
They refused to pay Immersion for the rights to use rumble, and instead released a sixasis bluetooth Wii ripoff that doesn't even always stay synced with the console. I don't how many times I got killed in Resistance online because my controller just intermittently stopped working. I returned the console thinking it was a defective unit, but the second one had the same problem. And I'm not alone, MANY people online reported the same problem.
I think Paul Atkinson hit the nail on the head when he pointed out the promotional pricing of the PS3 as the leading factor for the short-term sales spike. The PS3 LOOKS nice and shiny, and I loved the power button (man, that thing was cool) but the graphics were not as good as Xbox 360 games of the same name, and the online (even with HOME) is still going to be inferior FOR GAMING to Xbox Live. When you factor all this in, it is simply not worth $600. No way, not for Blu Ray, not for Ray Ray and not for Sugar Ray. For gaming, it's a $400 GAMING machine. Sell it at that and Sony would start crushing once they get a steady flow of games in the pipeline. But Sony is too arrogant to lower the price any time soon. Besides, they know like me...a price drop won't help them in the long run without games.
Kspraydad @ May 18th 2007 8:57PM
Tiberius why would you sell the system and be SICK of Sony then bother hanging out in a Sony Fanboy site. Sounds like you have sellers regret.
Vince UK @ May 18th 2007 9:43PM
Tiberius...
Shut up!
What a contrived load of drivel.
John @ May 18th 2007 10:55PM
Yeah, Tiberius is a plant. He/it actually said that "only a fraction" of ps2/ps1 games are backwards compatible. Those of us who actually own ps3's know that backwards compatibility is not an issue.
I think he was actually talking about that OTHER game system. The one he gets paid to promote. You know, the one with limited backwards compatibility. Oh, I just can't think of the name of it. I'm remembering, it burns out a lot, it's noisy, it overheats, it scratches discs... think of something that sucks really bad...
Now... what is the name of that system? Something at the end of the alphabet... Z... Y... something, I dunno.
massive_98 @ May 18th 2007 11:19PM
If you look at the multiplatform games most of em look just as shitty or just as nice on either the PS3 or 360. It's not suprising that the PS3 got a spike. Look at Drakes Fortune.
It has a robust and colorful world
Shooting action as well as some Prince of Persia flair
Really sharp character models
Interesting storyline (looks like the team at Naughty Dog has been working on the idea for quite awhile)
Forget about Lair and MGS:4 for a second(THIS WILL BE THE SYSTEM SELLER!)
WebMaster @ May 18th 2007 11:54PM
@ John
The one you're thinking about...is it the one with the install base over 3X that of the PS3? Or the one with taking all the PS3 former exclusives? The one with the huge steller library of games? Or is it the one that is consistantly outselling the PS3?
Just curious.
I am an early adopter, but sure as hell am not a fanboy of any console. After being sickened by the lack of games and Sony's BS factor, I purchased an Xbox 360 Elite. I have no intention of selling my PS3, and quite truthfully, the only area the PS3 has the 360 beat, in my opinion, is hardware quality. I suspect Sony learned their lesson with all the defective PS2's.
Lastly, are you being reimbursed for promoting the PS3?
Stellarpimp @ May 19th 2007 3:25AM
So much fanboism its unreal. Let's travel back in time and really think for a second. When has any videogame system ever had an assload of games within the first year? NONE. 360 didn't have anything worthwhile until Gears of War and that was over a year after its release. Sony has been out for 6 months and all the 360 fanboys are shouting victory. Seriously don't be n00bs... Its cool to cheer on the underdog (360) but seriously enough is enough. I'm the proud owner of a PS3 and a Wii... I truely wish success to all the companies. More games to play for everyone is the end goal!
naruto007 @ May 19th 2007 6:10AM
stop the gay fanboy train dudes every console has their good and bad points
sony's software isnt good for now
ms hardware isnt good for now
so thats it instead of blaiming sony's lack of games worry about your 360 and same to sony fans
everything was right after MR.Tiberius Jones come and start trolling
bootsielon @ May 19th 2007 11:17AM
Why are you all flaming Tiberius? He is right. ONLY a fraction play on PS3. You know what that fraction is? 98% of the games. BAD SONY.
Anyway, Tiberius, the whole validity of your argument went down the drain when you said that you sold your PS3 because there are "NO GAMES!11!!1!!1". Well, if there were no games, why did you even buy it in the first place, lemming?
rainerlagstyle @ May 19th 2007 12:27PM
I kiss my ps3 everyday, as a matter of fact. Sometimes we french, and I clean her b-spot
rainerlagstyle @ May 19th 2007 12:37PM
Oh yeah, and whoever said PS3 games look worse or something than 360,:
A) 360 has the same hardware standard used for the company's previous gaming venture. PS3 has a new processor whose power is daunting to a lot of developers at the moment, and it presumably takes a lot of new work.
B) The games don't look worse, PS3 shouldn't fear multiplatform games, it should simply deter the shitty ones from coming to the glorious XMB. Why? Because the PS3 version of the 360 game will always play better, look better, and feel better.
C) 360 has been out for a year or so before the PS3 - OF COURSE THE GAME LIST IS BIGGER!! Name one innovative game the 360 produced. Halo and Gears of War are the only two I can actively think of, and they aren't what I would call 'innovation', minus Gears' somewhat stellar implementation of the hide mechanic.
D) the PS online network is nice. XBox Live is nothing amazing, but what gets me is that they charge for it like they do everything else. And people pay for it like they do everything else.
E) lol have you seen the 360 controller
John @ May 19th 2007 10:43PM
RE: 18
A) Sorry kid, but the original Xbox used a Celeron variant, not a PowerPC variant. You're thinking of Nintendo.
B) I see wishful thinking is commonplace on PS3fanboy...
C) 360 has been out for a year yet all of its games except Gears of War have basically sold extremely well for one month and then fallen off a cliff. It's Sony's own damn fault that the PS3 doesn't have more than the terrible lineup it has right now.
D) You get what you pay for, and in Xbox Live's case it's PC-level online gaming for the price of one new last-gen game. In the PlayStation Network's case, it's an inferior experience overall as it's still not unified.
E) Haha, have you seen that PS3 controller? You know, the one that looks exactly like the Dual Shock and Dual Shock 2 except it doesn't have rumble and it's wireless?
seedaripper1973 @ May 20th 2007 6:32AM
@john
prick...
John @ May 20th 2007 11:16AM
Yeah, I'm totally being a "prick" by not being a neo-Nintendrone (ie, PS3 fanboy). Nice logic.
John @ May 20th 2007 11:20AM
Also, this joke of an article is completely inaccurate for just two reasons:
1) The "sales spike" is entirely due to the damn thing being £389.99, nothing to do with the Gamers' Day
2) The Wii isn't even readily available there
