Sony admits "lack of new software" to blame for slow PS3 sales
PLAYSTATION 3's performance at retail last month was surprisingly sluggish -- even more so than predicted. So what does Sony have to say about their admittedly disappointing showing? They don't seem too surprised. "PS3 did see a dip in sales in April that we attribute mostly to a lack of new software in the market," admitted Sony's Dave Karraker. The future should prove much brighter, as proven by Sony's incredible Gamers Day (which didn't include other high-profile games that Sony is working on). "For the remainder of this fiscal year, we expect a flood of new games for PS3 totalling more than 100 titles across all genres, including Heavenly Sword, Lair, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, LittleBigPlanet and many more. We feel strongly that this robust library will help drive hardware sales in the upcoming months."
Too bad none of those games are coming out soon. A look at the release calendar for next month reveals a total of eight games.

If the PS3 can survive until summer it will be able to keep on par with the 360 and even the Wii, there are some big games coming out in the coming summer months and some even bigger games coming out in the fall.
Yay I'm getting my Wii in two days. (No need to throw bricks I already have a PS3)

umm. I want some online shooting games for PS3. Unreal 3, Battlefield Bad Company, shoot, even Warhawk sounds good to me right now.

I want some jrpgs, it's what Sony platforms are known for and the whole reason I bought the damn thing. And Enchanted Arms doesn't count, it sucks rather painfully. Man, to think White Knight Story was nearly a launch title... that would've been awesome.

Are any of the games mentioned by Karraker except Lair coming out before this fall/winter (or later)? Lair doesn't strike me as a system-seller. A price drop this summer would be nice.

If there are 100 titles coming and the ones of note are Heavenly Sword, Lair, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, LittleBigPlanet...Sony is screwed.
Not that these will be bad games but none of these are the kind of games that one would call a system seller. Heavenly Sword looks great but it remains to be seen if it moves $600 consoles off the shelves.
The cumulative library on the PS3 is very anemic when compared to the 360.
Sony needs GTA 4 bad and a $150 price cut this fall and even that may not be enough to save them from the dulldrums.

I think "lack of new software" is definitely one reason for slow PS3 sales. However, I don't believe it to be the biggest/most important reason. After all, the Wii is lacking, and supply is failing to meet demand, even with ramped-up production.
There's a lot of factors, but at least Sony is getting better at acknowledging the current issues.
