Blu-ray movie releases for the week of May 28th

This week's Blu-ray release list is looking a little bare -- only two movies, a TV show, and one concert. The most interesting releases are probably the Chinese epic The Curse of the Golden Flower and the Showtime dark comedy, Weeds: Season One (which also happens to be one of the first TV shows to be released on Blu-ray). Check out the full release list below:

The Curse of the Golden Flower
Basic Instinct: Director's Cut
Weeds: Season One
Chris Botti: Live with Orchestra and Guests

Though this week was a little underwhelming, next week looks like one to look forward to. We'll be getting ten new Blu-ray releases including Hellboy and Trading Places. Mmm ... remember when Eddie Murphy was still funny?

I'd rather have season one of Dexter. Any idea of when that's coming out?

I cannot wait until Blu goes mainstream. An entire sesason of The Office on one disc.

If only other networks started to release more shows on BRD. Movies barely take up all the space blu has to offer (even with HD bonus features).

How about all three Pirates of the Caribean movies on one disc? Even with xtra stuff it should be under 50 gigs.

#2, that's not how it works. See, high definition video means it takes up a LOT more room than standard video does. You could fit all 3 pirates movies onto one blu-ray if its 480p, but the studios are putting full 1080p transfers onto their discs. Not just that, but multiple audio tracks, like PCM and 5.1. Some, like warner, are now including TrueHD as well. That's at least 3 audio tracks on top of 1080p video. There's a reason blu-ray is seeing more and more 50 gig discs being made over 25. There's so much content now, it can't fit onto a 25 gig.

In short, you will not be seeing all 3 pirates movies with extras on a single blu-ray disc for a long time. At least, not until they start making those rumored 300 gig discs STANDARD.

Also, The Office is made by NBC Universal, so it'll show up on HD-DVD.

Too bad the show "Weeds" is not actually an HBO show, it's a Showtime show.

Curse of the Golden Flower is a pass. I watched it last night and no amount of HD can make it interesting. They don't start fighting until about the second to the last scene, not what I was expecting when buying a kung fu movie.

ARGH not terrible but when are they going to release LOST season one and two on blu-ray?

I refuse to buy a 1080p HD television until they release LOST in all of it's 1080p glory.

RAWWWR, anyone know of any dates they've set for this?

Weeds is a fun show with a great soundtrack that I don't feel really benefits from 1080p much. Not like Planet Earth or LOST at any rate. Also, with the discussions of fitting whole seasons of shows on one disc, like with X-files for example, these were originally broadcast in standard def at 4:3. Would you all rather they try to get the original film and jack up the price having to remaster it all at 1080p and fit a couple episodes per disc? I wasn't real big into the show, but in general I'd like to see 4:3 shows done at 480p and just cram an entire 20+ episode season on one disc for $20. Otherwise these companies are never going to bother going back and trying to remaster old shows, but lots of cheap seasons of shows on one disc could help boost interest in blu-ray.
