EverQuest II on the PS3, or a bad case of the mis-typings? [Update 1]

French website Play 3 Live has upped some scans of, supposedly, a PS3 port of the moderately popular MMORPG EverQuest II: Echoes of Faydwer. The pictures they threw up depiciting the apparent port are all of some pretty freaky-looking fairies with quality not much enhanced from the PC version of the game. This could be because of fears of lag issues for the PS3 version, or because it might end up being a fully downloadable title. The latter speculation is an extreme stretch, but who can be sure?

After scouring the SOE Press Center, we've located what possibly could be the root of this rumor. The listing on Sony Online Entertainment's official site teases readers with the listing of the game as a " PC PS3" release. The pictures aren't in widescreen -- a staple of the PS3 gaming library. We're still keeping this as a rumor, but from the shady speculation surrounding this event, we'd bet our pirate booty that this is all a big error in typing. A mis-type, if you will.

For the uninitiated, just in case this turns out to be true, EverQuest II: Echoes of Faydwer tells the tale of [insert cookie-cutter MMO plotline and gameplay mechanics]. Don't get us wrong, we're not hating on EQ2, but just like many MMO's, FPS's based in WWII, and JRPG's featuring spiky-haired and oddly prepubescent youths, there's not much to separate it from a crowd.

[Update: IGN contacted SOE and as we imagined, the rumor has been confirmed to be completely untrue.]

I wouldn't be surprised if this is for real. Sony loves synergy of product. I also don't think they'd be willing to totally recreate the in-game assets (it's not going to be a big enough seller for that). I think this is a go.

I think we should just never trust the French when it comes to video games news. Remember when French director said that FFXIII is going to xbox?

This is about game update #35 for the PC version, which is the only version of EQ2 currently. While a PS3 port would not be impossible, this press release was concerning, in GU35, the addition of the Arasai, the race of playable "evil" faeries. Marketing types love more playable races/classes in online games.

I don't know what (PC PS3) refers to, but none of the PS3 press releases have such verbiage, and all the platform indicators for EQ2 releases state PC only.

pfft. the expansions are what makes the game run. I quit EQ2 for well over a year and i just came back yesterday. All i have to say is wow. EQ2 is 20 times the game it used to be.

However admittedly that time away from EQ2 was spent playing Vanguard. After Vanguard, a 20 hour schedule of being kicked in the cock on 3 minute intervals would seem like amazing gameplay.
