HELIOS PS3 Linux for fast and easy installation
HELIOS is offering PS3 owners a test server that runs on a simplified version of Yellow Dog Linux. The OS arrives via CD disk image and installs in about six minutes. Terra Soft Solutions, the brains behind Yellow Dog Linux, agreed to allow Helios to distribute this "lite" version, catering specifically to the PS3 crowd through its Cell optimization. HELIOS, being no stranger to server development, says this modified Linux test-drive server will offer full DHCP network settings, support for Java 1.5 and AppleTalk enhanced kernel. Interested parties should head to the HELIOS website here, which provides detailed instructions on how to download the client and set it up. Let the game hosting officially begin!

is it possible to run Linux on the ps3 from a live cd without having to format my hard drive?
for example i just put the cd in, use Linux like an application or something, and then just take it out.

Yes. But all the features aren't running and its slow as molasses.

I have HELIO
I have a PS3
But I have no idea what this means for me. Is this something I should even bother learning about and applying? Sorry I'm not really a tech guy when it comes to Linux and servers...

@Geoff: Just ignore this blog entry. Helios Linux has nothing to do with your Helio phone.

To re-ask Geoff's question (phone aside) why install Linux? After installing does it show up as as option to start running or does it replace the existing PS3 interface?
If I install this can I run applications from the PS3, and would it allow me to access sites on the internet through the PS3 with Linux that have Flash or WIndows Media embedded in them?
thx.

@Sean,
It shows up as an option to start, and I think you can tell the PS3 which OS to boot into by default. It does not replace the XMB (Cross Media Bar), nor can you start PS3 games from within Linux without rebooting your system into the XMB first.
If you install Linux you can do everything that Linux can do on your PS3. Flash and Windows(!) Media probably won’t work, as I doubt that Adobe and Microsoft have made plugins available for PS3 Linux (as they both only provide binary code, it needs to be compiled for the PS3 CPU). Although maybe it can run binaries compiled for PPC machines, Adobe might provide those. Somewhere. Be prepared to look it up and manually install it with a lot of configuring hassle, and nobody to hold your hand.
But er, doesn’t the PS3 built-in browser have Flash support? I heard you could use Youtube in it...
That said, I am not a Linux user nor have I got Linux installed on my PS3.
