Rumor: Warhawk beta being hacked by rabid fans
Invites to the Warhawk beta were limited, but that is apparently not stopping the most dedicated of fans from stopping in for a visit. The methods certainly scream fanboy, as they involve tweaking the PS3 linux code to such a degree that only those with copious amounts of patience and an undying love to taste the beta phase of Warhawk could withstand such an arduous process. A simple web search showed at least four variants of this method, some without the need for linux tweaking. Something tells us we're not so sure Incog. Inc would be flattered to see an increase in beta participants from unauthorized gamers at the closed beta event.
Without official word from Incog, there is no way to know if such hackers have had any affect on the beta phase of the project. These guys have enough on their hands with working out the kinks in multiplayer, without having to police their invite-only event. Lest any such intrusive action cause a further game delay, we issue a word of advice to all would-be hackers: stay out of the beta if you're not invited. Let those that were lucky enough to receive a beta invite continue to provide the devs feedback they need to make the final Warhawk experience the best it can be for the rest of us. We'll get our fill soon enough.

You don't need Linux whatsoever, and it's not "arduous". Bar the time it takes to download the beta, it takes maybe 2 minutes of actual "work" to run the Proxy server, put in the correct settings and then change the setting on the PS3 and start the installer. Piece of cake, have a look over at ps3news.

From the no comments/non replies on the Warhawk beta forums, I don't think Incog is looking to ban or search for illegal beta users. They have other things to worry about.
Besides, this is not a surgical beta, just a beta to test overall network use, which can better tested by the general public.
I'm in the beta and don't really care. More people to shoot I say, lambs to the slaughter.

i dont see how u could do that. seems difficult

well, its a good thing something like this was caught early on. hopefully they will have ironed out the workaround/ hacks by the time of release.
this is a much better situation than your average 0-day exploit that wont get patched for weeks/ months. at least they have time to patch/ plan ahead of release time.

hell i cant even get the proxy server thing to download so i can do it. anyone know how to do it?
the drizzle @ Jun 4th 2007 5:20PM
Yeah no Linux required...
That's how I worked around and downloaded it. It's not even any sort of in-game exploit, it's just a backdoor way to download the file from the PS Store without having been invited.
It isn't anything that needs to be patched for release of the game...although there are plenty of things that need fixing...
-Planes taken out with 2 sniper shots
-Pistol more powerful than machine gun? C'mon
-Turrets are far too powerful in my opinion.
Plenty of others, but I'll let you all backdoor your way into the beta and see for yourself.
I noticed on some computers the PS3Proxy program wont run, you open it and the program just disappears. If that's the case for you, don't know what to tell ya.
Otherwise, go onto PS3News and do a little reading, and a little trial and error...once ya get what it is youre doing, it's nothin.
See ya on the battlefield!

As guy who is in the beta all I can say is that this is SERIOUSLY NOT WORTH THE EFFORT.
Screw the bluetooth headset, They should pack in a bottle of No Doze with the retail release.

First off Incognito should have done a better job protecting it.
Secondly people just need to wait there turn with the beta. I heard the second beta will be sometime in July. This is coming from someone who didn't get in the beta but really wanted to.

PS3fanboy, your message did more harm than anything else. I, myself, didnt know there was a method to bypass the beta download... but thanks to you, now I do.
I also find unfair that a person like me, who wanted the beta so much, didnt get a spot... yet others, who claim the beta is boring, got it.
There's a sentence here in Spain that is somewhat like this: "God gives bread to the one that hasnt got teeth"

Not being accepted into a beta does not validate illegelally making your way into one. There are plenty of betas throughout the year, yet people always feel it is their right to be in "x" beta. Sorry doesn't work that way. Get in line and submit an app again.
And also, the people that are in the beta, have access to the features to report bugs found. Those of you leeching are not contributing in any way shape or form because not only do you NOT have access to communication with the devs via private forums for the beta, you also can't submit feedback on bugs encountered. All you are doing is bogging the servers down and keeping the real testers (those invited) from testing the game.
