Square confirms FFXIII isn't going to the 360 (nor is any other FF game)
Square Enix is just laying down the smack this week. After confirming yersterday that FFVII isn't being made, they've come out and stated that they are not working on a single Final Fantasy game for the Xbox 360. In an interview with the Japanese Business website Nikkei BP, Square Enix executive Hashimito dropped the bomb. When the site asked if the Wii or The Xbox 360 are going to get any Final Fantasy games, Hashimito responded, "For the Wii, we have FF Crystal Chronicles in production. As for FF on the Xbox 360, it's currently a completely blank page."
Ouch -- well that pretty much debunks the ongoing 'Final Fantasy XIII OMGZ Xbox 360' rumors right there. While it seems unlikely that the Xbox 360 will never get another FF game, it appears that for the foreseeable future the PlayStation 3 will be getting all the big name Final Fantasy love. This is fantastic news for Sony and the PlayStation 3, since not only is there a 'slight' dearth of big name third-party exclusives, but also both Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X both helped skyrocket the sales of the PlayStation systems that they were on. And it seems very likely that the same thing will happen with PlayStation 3 sales once FFXIII is released.
Mmm ... the idea that FFXIII is being built exclusively around the PS3 and Blu-ray is pretty exciting. That just makes the wait until next year that much harder though!

to paraphrase from a joystiq post yesterday...
OUCH! 360 just got BURNED! Thats sick...lol.
So... can we quit hearing about this and MGS4 now? I realize we haven't quite gotten a "blank page" quote from Konami, but we've gotten everything short of it from Kojima.

I just think it's funny that lemmings actually go to ps3fanboy

This should cool the fire about 360 stealing FF13 for a bit. Of course people will forget about this later and it will pop up again. All I can say is i'm very happy this is true as it justifies my purchase of a PS3. I have both 360 and PS3 and there wouldn't be much of a reason to own both if all games were available for both systems.
mat parker @ Jun 5th 2007 7:22PM
I still expect a PC version though

Isn't it kind of late to say "no FF on 360?"
there was FFXI, after all, although some consider that to be a noncanon FF
unless they specify the future tense
Azorean @ Jun 5th 2007 7:35PM
Last time I checked this was PS3 Fanboy so why report on what the 360 is or isn't getting? does someone feel threatened by what the competition may or may not get?
mat parker @ Jun 5th 2007 7:35PM
Mr khan
we tend to ignore it it kind of sucked
TK00 @ Jun 5th 2007 7:38PM
12 - bkvalheim - They're not a series. Barring a few reoccurring themes each FF game is completely different. (OK except for x-2) There awesome games, in my opinion. They also sell a ton, thats a fact. Kinda hard to call them dead, maybe?
I don't where the hell you got Madden from; every sports game puts out a new version every year. Sorry you don't like them. I'm pretty sure Madden sells more then any game on the planet, so I guess it's dead as well huh.
Colin.Torretta @ Jun 5th 2007 7:43PM
Azorean:
The article is relevant because FFXIII is a massive title that has been rumored to be going multi-platform since the day it was announced. Just like how we report on the exclusivity status of DMC4 and Metal Gear Solid, we report on the exclusivity status of FFXIII.
We aren't trying to sling mud at the 360 with this post. If you notice, we didn't make fun of the 360 at all in the post. But this news is important to both the PS3 and the 360 and is something that a lot of fans will want to hear, so that is why we decided to run this story.
Hope that is a satisfactory explanation. :)

who cares...
kingnick @ Jun 5th 2007 8:06PM
I'm not surprised in the least for a number of reasons:
1. The 360 is selling pitifully in Japan,
2. A linear game with lots of FMVs better suits the PS3's Blu-ray and its audience,
3. I don't think it would have been high on Microsofts list as I doubt they'd be prepared to outbid Sony,
4. Never heard SE say it was coming to Xbox360.
kingofwale @ Jun 5th 2007 8:11PM
>18. who cares...
apparently cared enough to read the story and replied.
That shot itself is enough for me to buy the game. :)
Champloo @ Jun 5th 2007 8:18PM
I personally consider this a non-event, they didn't say it wasn't coming to Xbox 360, they merely said it was a blank page. Meaning nothing has been decided yet. I personally believe The Last Remnant is S-E's way of testing the water to see if there's a viable Japanese, and ultimately Global, market.
Personally I'd like them to bring the game to the 360 so I can buy it, but if they don't they lose my business, and that's THEIR problem. They need my business more than I need their game. Now don't take that the wrong way, I think the PS3 is a phenomenal product, I just can't afford one. Let me do some math for you:
I'm Canadian, and therefor the price of PlayStation 3 is $699 +tax. Add on the tax, and that comes to roughly $800 CAD. Now, the average PS3 game is $69.99 +tax. That comes to... about $100 CAD. That's NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS for one game and one game system. A console which I would ONLY use to play games, as I don't have an HDTV all of those fancy Blu-ray features are meaningless to me.
At this point the only PS3 game I currently want is Final Fantasy XIII, and no game is worth $900 CAD. If the don't put it on the Xbox 360, fine, I can live without it. It's the sheer gall to think that their game is worth $900, that gets me.
Dalrint @ Jun 5th 2007 8:35PM
I never understand why anyone except the console developers care about exclusive games. 'Oh, yay, ffxiii can't be bought by everyone!' is an odd thing to be thrilled about.
I can see why Microsoft might care if they don't have it to sell more consoles, or why Sony could care that they don't have Halo 3 to sell more consoles, or why everyone wishes they were secretly the Wii for Super Smash Brothers Whatever. But the average person should not be thrilled when something is exclusive. They aren't doing it to make you 'feel better'. It's a trick to get you to buy a console.
And yes, I will buy a PS3 for this game, so it works. So all it does, as a consumer, is hurt me. Same with any 'exclusive' 360 or wii game that PS3 owners want. Now they have to buy another console to play it. It's good marketing sense, because it's only bad for us.
Joe @ Jun 5th 2007 9:07PM
22 Dalrint, your comments makes some sense, if you do not factor in the difference in technology between the competitors. I'm one of the fools convinced that ps3 has a much greater potential, so it is in my best interest that a game such as FF13 stays exclusive to ps3, which gives me the impression that it will better utilize that potential, unlike F.E.A.R. and several other ports. Often multiplatform games will only look as good as the weakest platform, but with minor graphical enhancements on the more powerful ones. Didn't you read the article about GTA4? Considering that the architecture between the 2 main graphical competitors are very different, it would be more difficult for companies to fully utilize the potential of both. So far, I haven't seen any games that resemble prerendered CG movies, and I was starting to lose hope for this gen's consoles until I saw the trailer for FF13 and I'm still optimistic for Killzone.
Is this a good enough reason?
Hoffer @ Jun 5th 2007 9:06PM
I can never get excited about exclusive news for the PS3. I've never liked MGS or FF games.
Roddra @ Jun 5th 2007 11:21PM
The exclusivity applies to quality of product. The White Engine used by Square-Enix is designed specifically around the Cell processor in mind, utilizing its advantages for the increase in quality per generation we've come to expect from said company.
As far as the Japanese sale argument goes, the PlayStation 3 is more or less selling as projected this early in its lifetime (compare the sales of the previous generations, interesting stuff). Microsoft, having once carried on constantly about taking Japan by storm, has returned nearly all of its focus to North America and Europe.
kingofwale @ Jun 5th 2007 9:29PM
>you would also know Ps3 is doing just as poorly
if you considering 4-1 to 5-1 that PS3 is outselling 360 in japan is "just as poorly"
then yes.
WTangoFoxtrot @ Jun 5th 2007 9:32PM
well kingofwale a 5-1 ratio is BAD for a console recently launched against its competitor on home turf. i wonder what the ratio of 360 to PS3 is like in north America which is home turf for MS.
kingofwale @ Jun 5th 2007 9:37PM
>i wonder what the ratio of 360 to PS3 is like in north America which is home turf for MS.
it's 4-1 exactly in North America this week, of course, with the release of Forza, normally, it's 3-1.
with PS2 selling closing to 1-1 with PS2. I guess considering you already said that selling closing to 5-1 in Home Turf is "BAD", I guess you must also think Microsoft's 3-1 normally as "Terrible"?? ;)
kingofwale @ Jun 5th 2007 9:38PM
it should read "PS2 is selling close to 1-1 with xbox"
TouchmyWiimote @ Jun 5th 2007 9:55PM
Who cares. To me Final Fantasy ended with 10. 11 really should of been called "Final Fantasy Online" and despite what most people think, I thought Final Fantasy 12 sucked major balls. Most of the classic Final Fantasy team has moved on, and so have I.
sig @ Jun 5th 2007 10:17PM
who cares its not going to be on the 360 i mean we 360 gamers care about fps games not ur silly final fantasy games ps. ps3 has no good fps games
mccomber @ Jun 5th 2007 10:16PM
Wow, this thread could be a one-stop reference if ps3fanboy had an "ignore" function.
The number of people who would be jumping up and down right now if this were announced for 360 who suddenly couldn't care less and hated the game anyway is hilarious. I also love how the "no single game is worth..." argument is brought up. Again. Funny thing is, that's why I haven't bought a 360 yet.
Champloo @ Jun 5th 2007 10:34PM
@mccomber - Exactly. There aren't enough games that you enjoy for the Xbox 360 to warrant a purchase of the console, just as there aren't enough games that I enjoy for me to buy a PS3. No single game IS worth $900. Heck, I wouldn't buy a $399 console for just one game.
I know of 25 - 30 upcoming games (in total) that I'm looking forward to on the 360 and Wii. Anyways, to each their own and all that, different people enjoy different things. If there were 25 games on the PS3 that I wanted, I'd buy one, no doubt.
@sig - That's not true at all, Xbox 360 fans don't all just care about FPS games. In fact, the ONLY FPS games I have ever enjoyed were Quake 3 Arena, the Halo series, and perhaps the Metroid Prime series. So don't lump gamers like myself who care about games, rather than consoles, in with the "I bought an Xbox 360 because I just like to shoot things!" group.
SKI @ Jun 5th 2007 10:46PM
I loved how at the launch of the PS3 (and the next couple of months), people were spouting about how the 360 was a FPS console and yet the only reason to buy a PS3 was a FPS.
mccomber @ Jun 5th 2007 11:10PM
Right on Champloo, and with the number of multi-platform titles that are coming out, the reasons to buy one over the other hinge mainly on the first-person and few exclusives left. Thus, one reason I bought a ps3; the franchises I've always enjoyed the most are Sony ones, and the addition of MGS4 and FF13 to the first party is just icing. You also touch on the point that always seems to get lost in that argument; unless you are a huge fan, no single game makes any console, it's the library. We keep hearing on the ps3 side about each title that looks big and promises to deliver "isn't enough to warrant the purchase". Well of course not; it's the library as a whole, and looking at what we know is coming, the ps3 is going to have a fairly strong gaming library before the year is out.
I know at some point I'll break down and buy a 360 (when the price drops or possibly sooner dependent on how it's next big games turn out) but until then, I'm fine with the ps3.
Reesimo @ Jun 5th 2007 11:52PM
Well, when you think of playing Final Fantasy on a console, do you think XBOX?
kingofwale @ Jun 6th 2007 12:17AM
>ps3 has no good fps games
hmmm, I guess Fall of Man isn't a good game? hmmm,
Sean @ Jun 6th 2007 1:14AM
As a PS3 owner I'm more concerned about what games are being released on the PS3 rather than what games aren't being released on the 360
Slow news day for sure
BlackBeltJones @ Jun 6th 2007 4:18AM
@30
I kinda agree, I really liked FF10, I'm possibly the only person in existence that enjoyed blitzball. I didn't try out 11, and am trying to get through 12 right now but am having trouble getting the desire to pick it up. I don't like the gameplay (I suck at creating gambits and hate the license board) but I am enjoying the story and want to see how it turns out. Maybe I'll just read a wiki about it.
Sammy @ Jun 6th 2007 5:51AM
People care what exclusives arrive at which console...because for most they will use the unique software and potential software as the decisive factor in which machine to purchase.
I think it is important to the industry as a whole that all consoles remain as competitive as possible.
The PS3 has got off to a horrendous start. But I do believe there is a lot of first party software that is starting to show the potential of the machine.
the Xbox360 has had a great run and has a great lineup...but the machines are starting to push off in different directions. Increasing the potential of us all eventually wishing to purchase both.
PS3 RULES @ Jun 6th 2007 7:55AM
@12 Final fantasy does mean final. The first one was suppose to be the companies last game do to financial issues but instead it turned the company around. So of course they are proud of this series and continue to make new games with the title but in different universes.
shase @ Jun 6th 2007 9:19AM
the final fantasies at least have a bit more variety than the Zeldas, metroids and marios. Its has almost no recurring cast and the story, battle system etc. are all different (for the most part). I dont really treat the game as another "FF", i treat it as another RPG. People aren't stupid... I think they would've gotten it by now if they feel they were "ripped off" by the name FF. Heck Mario people keep coming back.
Popfrogs @ Jun 6th 2007 10:22AM
PS3Rules is kinda wrong here. Final Fantasy was supposed to be the last game that Hironobu Sakaguchi made before he retired. It just so happened that it was so great it spawned a series and to date, the FF series has sold over 70 million games.
Square was in trouble at that time, to be sure, and FF did boost their sales. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_(series)
oldxskoolxhlywd @ Jun 8th 2007 10:11PM
The 360 might have had a shot at FFXIII if FFXI Online didn't suck MAJOR ass. But really Square Enix, who's fault was that? If FFXIII really is P$3 only, I'll never buy a Square Enix product EVER again. Same goes with you, Kojima.
why isnt there a XboxWii60Station 3??? (sigh)
oh, and @ 19:
microsoft has an endless supply of money to throw at its game division, courtesy of mr gates, and they definitely have more money than $ony, jackass.
GET YOUR FUCKING FACTS STRAIGHT
CHOCO-AID @ Jun 12th 2007 3:50PM
I hope they change their minds and make FF13 on the 360 too, or atleast make FF vs XII on the 360
