Sony nominated: best new IP, innovation, publishing hero
Welcome to the Develop Conference & Expo in the UK! They've just announced their nominations for the Develop Industry Excellence Awards, and while there were nominations for all sorts of games and platforms, Sony stood tall and took pride in getting enough nominations with PS3 software that we at PS3 Fanboy have to feel a sense of pride for the company whose product is our namesake. We'll let you know where Sony and its studios got the nod below.- For Creativity, Evolution Studios' MotorStorm got a nomination.
- For Visual Arts, both Evolution Studios' MotorStorm and SCEE Studio Liverpool's F1 Championship Edition got nominations.
- Sony itself got nominated for being a "Publishing Hero" which we will assume means they have some kind of special power of publishing. Heroes are cool.
- F1 Championship Edition got mentioned for being among the best in the use of online capabilities.
- Super Rub-a-Dub got a mention for innovation, as well.
So, good job, Sony! Seems you've got a knack for making fun, innovative, and creative racing games. And floating duck games that get universally panned by critics, but secretly enjoyed by some. With these credentials tucked under their belt, will Sony have an equally praised performance at E3 next month? We'll have to wait and see, but don't be surprised if some new games show up as winners in categories much like these.

Finally F1 is getting the rewards (or at least nominations) it deserves! It's by far one of the best racing games i've ever played and anyone that owns a PS3 and loves road racing should go out and buy this game. The graphics alone are worth $600, but the options and racing itself makes this a must buy. Go to any gaming site, read fan reviews, and you'll see that 99% of people that bought it are in love with the game and rated it way higher than those that reviewed it.

Lol, that's such a terrible game tho. where's that bowling game? That should get the nod, not the stupid Duck game.

The duck game is more of a tech demo of how the sixaxis works than was meant to be a good game. My 6 and 4 year old both love that game.

I loves me some Motorstorm, but reading that list makes me realize how bad gaming has been recently. The Holidays can't come fast enough.

Meh, as much as I enjoyed Super Rub'a'Dub, that little tilt game does not deserve a nomination for innovation. And I certainly don't think it's worth more than the 6 euro I gave for it.
It seems to be great for for kids, but that does not a brilliant game make.

As for the "publishing hero" nomination, I agree with that one 100%. Sony is taking risks you wouldn't even see the likes of Nintendo taking.
They're courageous enough to invest in indy as well as artistic developers, as games like ICO, SOTC, flOw and Little Big Planet prove.

Sony (PlayStation) is still THE NAME in video gaming, they still set the standard.

What dalejrfanfreak said: Formula 1: Championship Edition was the game that made me break down and get a PS3. (Well, that and Planet Earth on BD).

Looks like some items were left out, here's a sampling:
"Crackdown and its creator Realtime Worlds were nominated for a number of different achievements, including: New Console/PC IP, Visual Arts, Audio Accomplishment, Best Use of Online, Innovation, New UK/European Studio and Independent Developer categories."

Now, here's something we as gamers should be concerned about:
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070609/D8PL8PP80.html
"LONDON (AP) - The Church of England accused Sony Corp. (SNE) on Saturday of using an English cathedral as the backdrop to a violent computer game and said it should be withdrawn from shop shelves.
The church said Sony did not ask for permission to use Manchester cathedral and demanded an apology.
The popular new PlayStation 3 game, "Resistance: Fall of Man," shows a virtual shootout between rival gunmen with hundreds of people killed inside the cathedral. Church officials described Sony's alleged use of the building as "sick" and sacrilegious.
A spokesman for the Church of England said a letter will be sent to Sony on Monday. If the church's request for an apology and withdrawal of the game is not met, the church will consider legal action, the spokesman said.
Sony spokeswoman Amy Lake told The Associated Press on Saturday that the company's PlayStation division was looking into the matter and would release a statement later."

Why? I could give a rat's ass about some building. Do developers have to ask permission to feature the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, the former "Twin Towers", Bob and Marsha's home? Buildings, like it or not are public entities. People see them on a daily basis and don't have to ask permission to take pictures of them. Even then, if a developer creates a digital mockup of said building, and your not actually using any photos of said building, there's no intellectual tie to anything real. Where does it end? Again, I could really care less what some religious group or building owner cares about.

"Why? I could give a rat's ass"
Well, you can continue to be an asshat about it or begin to utilize the grey matter flopping around in your skull. This is the kind of media crap that the vocal minority are attempting to use to censor or control the content of video games.
Personally, I think that building should be in the public domain, nevertheless, people need to stand up to those, such as the bone head attorney sueing rock* over GTA.
But you go ahead and give that "rats ass" and see how far that gets us.
bootsielon @ Jun 9th 2007 7:23PM
WebMaster, nobody cares. That's not a hit against gaming or Sony. That's not even close to the ridiculous attempts of Jack Thompson to bring gaming down or at least control it.
Seriously, Sony will take care of this, you know how? Doing absolutely nothing, since they're not infringing anything. I hope this backfires with some hate against that church, just for spite.
Azorean @ Jun 9th 2007 7:46PM
An Impact at E3...because of this! lol haven't you guys figured it out by now? Know one cares what the UK thinks that's why they don't release over there until a later date.
John @ Jun 11th 2007 9:47PM
Why is this "WebMaster" guy promoting xbox360 games here? It wasn't mentioned because it's not a ps3 game.
Your very choice of name alone is putting you low in the ranks. Posting comments as "WebMaster" is disingenuous, leading some people to believe that you're the webmaster of this site, thereby falsely upping the status of your goofy comments.
Use a different name, something more suited to you, like LIa4 or Dumbaaaaass.
