Sony survey says: selling 80GB PS3 in Europe isn't necessary
Sony CEO and President of the European side of things, David Reeves, recently issued a statement regarding the potential release of a new, 80GB, model of the PlayStation 3 in Europe. You may recall this version of the Sony mammoth device is getting released in Korea, along with other special features like downloadable content. Well, Mr. Reeves has pointed out that such a model will not make its way to Europe any time soon. His reasoning behind such a decision is this: "there are markets like Korea where there's very high broadband penetration and the people there are used to downloading content, so they require a certain size hard drive." True, but does this mean we'll never see a higher storage capacity in our PS3's in Europe and the Americas (plus Canada)? Not for a while. If you really need the storage space, though, you can stick any internal hard drive you want in there. So long as it's a 2.5" SATA drive. If we start getting downloadable content like HD movies or TV shows, it'd be a worthwhile investment.

Increasing the capacity by 20 gigs seems an odd amount. Perhaps Sony will jump to this amount in the US when they start packing in controllers with rumble and drop the price to $479 in Sept/Oct. We'll see.

They're probably doing this because it's becoming impossible to source the 60 gig drives. I'd expect a 120 gig model by the end of 2007. I think it'd help Sony's price if they also released an HDD-less version, so that people can throw in their own SATA drive of whatever size without being forced to pay for the one that comes with it.

You can also stick just a typical external HDD on it through the USB ports if you need someplace to store your files and keep the 60G internal to gaming and temporary storage. 1TB drives are just around the corner and it's easy enough to stick them in an external USB enclosure for less than $50 (plus the drive price of course [$400 on newegg for the Hitachi 1TB])

@2 not having a hd at all would be crazy for sony. all dev count on the hd to some extent and losing it save a few bucks would make some games unplayble to those ppl who dont have one. and although its pretty darn easy to put one in joe schmoe consumer would be to scurrred to pop one in themselse for fear of f'in it up. and mr reeves is right korea is connected broadban is e-very-where i still think they should roll it out in the stated but where broadban is really kicking up.

The system won't turn on without a hard drive

The idea is a good one, what it means is that you have to buy a hard drive for it, you just get to choose your own drive to put in.
