WipEout HD coming to a PSN near you before the year's end
With E3 only a couple of weeks away, we generally don't expect to come across revelations like this. Developers are keeping their cards very close to their chests so that they can make some huge announcements when the games show comes around. Sony's Studio Liverpool, it appears, is the exception to the rule. 1Up spent some time with them recently, during a showing of WipEout Pulse for the PSP in London (our invite must have got lost in the mail) and managed to get some information out of the game's director Tony Buckley.
Buckley confirmed that Studio Liverpool will be releasing WipEout HD on the PSN before the end of the year. An official announcement will be coming in August (as was previously announced), or possibly at E3. As well as high definition graphics, the game will feature an online multiplayer mode. Whether this will be a remake of the PS1 classic or not is unclear. However, this is only the beginning of Studio Liverpool's plans for the series on the PS3. They have their eye on a 2008 release date for a "major" Wipeout release on the console.
After hearing so little about possible PS3 outings for the series for so long, it's great to see the recent torrent of news coming out of Studio Liverpool. We look forward to hearing more from them in the near future.

That kinda sucks. We had all been expecting THE PS3 WIPEOUT game to RELEASE in 2007- not 2008.
Sure, more time means more polish and what not but im kinda pissed that they are going to try and tide us over with an HD version of an old game it seems. If it were WipeOut Fusion + WipeOut Pulse + HD models/textures/engine/etc. I would TOTALLY buy it to tide me over........for $20 or less.

I will buy this for $10... nothing more.

I'd probably pick up an HD version of the original game for $10, maybe $15. Would depend on if they add anything extra or not. I loved that game back in the day (on the saturn...) so I'd love to get an updated version of it. As long as they put the work into brining it back I'd consider it worth it.
That game was a defining title not just for the ps1, but for gaming in general.
As for a full ps3 title, I don't mind waiting till 2008; we've got plenty of titles on the way this fall that we know of now, and I bet we'll hear about a couple more come E3.

i stink at Wip3Out - but it still looks cool. I wonder if they will upgrade the sounds and music for 5.1? If so, this could be a sweet deal at $19.99! (If not, 5.99 tops!)
BTW: Is it me or are we starting to see a trend here? The PS3 is reminding me more and more of how the PSOne started out, slow for a year and a half and then - BANG!!! Instant classic console! =D

@4:
I stink at it too and was reminded of that fact when I bought WipEout for the PS1 from the PS Store 2 weeks ago. The graphics looked awful also (I know, it's so old what can I expect) but I remember owning a 2 record, vinyl set of the WipEout 2 soundtrack. Amazing tunes on that one.
Yes it does seem like history is repeating itself. Sony is an innovator, and their hardware is notoriously tricky to work with for noobs. The thing is, everyone is a noob when something is this new and different. Same thing happened with the PS1 and PS2. Plus, development tools and middleware take time to grow and mature.
The end of this year will be incredible but then we have more AAA titles coming early next year. Time for a PS3 re-launch this Christmas shopping season.
