Firmware 1.82 is available for your downloadable pleasure
Since the launch of the PlayStation 3 in America, Sony has released at least one firmware update every month. This month we pulled down two firmware updates, though they were kind of tiny. 1.81 fixed an error that some people had with RGB Full feature and thanks to the PlayStation.Blog we know that this update includes better support for the h.264 and better support for PS2 titles. And now firmware 1.82 is available for download onto your hot little PlayStation 3s. The update appears to be surprisingly large considering the lack of major changes, but Sony's efforts are appreciated nonetheless. And who knows, maybe they're saving up all the big changes for next month.

How large, say 100mbish? AFAIK "Updates" don't update firmware, they replace it, thats how it works with the PSP anyway...

I love it that when you update the firmware theres no damn resume function so everytime I get disconnected I have to start at 0% once again. I think this is the 8th time I'm trying to download the update and the best I can do is up to 30% before a network error. Thank you Sony. How hard does it take to program a resume function???

^ you could always use the PC update method... just put it on an sd card and be done.

Does the firmware update just overwrite the old update or does it get stored onto the harddrive? meaning does updates take up more and more harddrive space?

It's temporarily stored in the hard drive, and then flashed.

I really wish Sony would make their updates available through the Playstation Network coincide with those available at their web site. It's irritating to have this phat pipe at work available to download it onto a flash drive for later use, only to find that they're still offering 1.81 on playstation.com

I wasn't able to sign on to PSN until I performed the update last night. I don't remember that happening in previous updates, so I guess that may be a little hint that they changed some PSN-related functionality.
I'm hoping they added something cool that will get announced shortly. But probably just some bugfix.

These features could easily be keep until the next major update. I mean is anyone actually excited for this update?
Isn't h.264 something you have to have to play videos on your Ipod?

I suppose I'm glad that Sony is trying to add features to the PS3, but I'm pretty tired of having to constantly update the thing. I'm not trying to flame, but my 360 seems to have the timing down to a more "acceptable" level. I play the PS3 less frequently but seemingly "always" need to update.
When it comes to devices being updated, I'm fine with computers needing constant attention, but I want a completely different experience for consoles.
Sony, in this gamer's opinion, thanks for trying to add new features, but please try to release updates less frequently.

I want them less frequently as well unless they contain some features that will make people shut up. All the time it is the same things that people keep whinning for
"I want it to upscale PS3 games"
"I want XMB access in games"
"I want my PS3 to grill eggs"(currently that is exclusive to the Xbox 360)

I think it is awesome that Sony keeps updating the PS3. I mean, every firmware update that I can remember, aside from 1.81, actually added new features. Personally, I like the constant upgrades, and I wouldn't want them to save all the updates for months and do only big upgrades.
Cheers to Sony for constantly upgrading the PS3 platform!
Now, I just wish someone would release some h.264 video conversion software that supported all the PS3 capabilities - something similar to the software the Sony already sells for the PSP...
