This Uncharted video takes our breath away
This video, captured at the IDEF in Cannes, shows almost six and a half minutes of gameplay footage for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. From a graphics and animation standpoint, this game look amazing. The jungle reminds us of a much more photorealistic Jak and Daxter (the first one, before it sold out and became a GTA clone), which would make sense considering they're both by Naughty Dog. The main character's movements are fluid and nimble. This game promises to be a true feast for the eyes.
Whether the story can live up to expectations is another matter. Though with Amy Hennig (writer for the Legacy of Kain series) directing, we have high hopes. Check out the video for yourselves and see what you think.

Wowsers. The atmosphere looks great, his animations can be a little stiff here and there but man, the movements of him falling off the logs and grabbing on look amazing. I just hope, will all the detail and everything that the game is longer than a few hours. Games that cram all the eye candy usually end up being rather short. Fingers Crossed!!!

Wow. That game looks fun. I had such a blast playing the world in Resistance last night.
recon @ Jun 30th 2007 10:31AM
OMG i'm getting nauseas. This game is sick! Cant wait!
It kinda reminds me of what that old game Flashback (the first one) but for 2007. Very fluid movements that can be chained together. Good Stuff!
Toby @ Jun 30th 2007 10:57AM
Omg so this is where Amy went. Ive been waiting for a new LoK game since defiance, but im sure this will be just as good!
GodisaMyth @ Jun 30th 2007 11:32AM
I believe that this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. This game is starting to show what awaits us in the land of PS3 as developers continue to unlock the PS3's power.
Think about it, this is Naughty Dog's 1st attempt at a PS3 game, one can only imagine what they will be capable of with their 2nd and 3rd game on the PS3.
I agree with Team Ninja....if you bitch about how hard it is to develop for the PS3 then you should not make games at all or maybe just make them for that 7yr old hardware that is masquerading as a new platform.
Look at a Wee game and then look at this....
Weeboys, you can have your Metroid, Mario, and Zelda along with countless amounts of Mini-games and last-gen rehashes with "motion" controls.
Bring on E3!!!
GRT @ Jun 30th 2007 11:42AM
I was worried at the gunplay at first, but then it seemed like whoever was 'driving' just hadn't figured out the controls. Once we saw him take cover and aim I was less worried.
Also it looks like they've used motion controls in a much better way than most games. First with tilting rather than random shaking, and second by putting the controller icon showing you what to do off to one side instead of stuck in the middle of the screen over the action.
I'm pretty excited for this one, even though the gameplay actually seems very Tomb Raider-ish.
Who Flang Poo @ Jun 30th 2007 12:23PM
Wow, the visuals look amasing, but watching the video honestly made me kind of bored. Its not much different from the Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones games, and another thing is that im thinking that game will be pretty short. I have been looking forward to this game but now I think I am having second thoughts about this game it has a lot of hype and the visuals are awesome, but the game play seems to be more running around and firuring out where to go instead of shootin and other fun stuff. In my opinion, this game sems it will get old fast and have poor replay value.
mccomber @ Jun 30th 2007 12:29PM
Yes and please. I've always loved adventure games like this appears to be and this looks friggin awesome. Everything looks like it's coming together really nicely, with just a few small things that need to be tweaked and worked out. The environment is absolutely gorgeous, his overall animation is really nice... another one added to the list (or in this case underlined twice).
CJ @ Jun 30th 2007 12:33PM
WOW We may have a game that is worth a shit?! Finally? Dont get your hopes up
nathan @ Jun 30th 2007 12:44PM
that game looks like garbage. Looks like it will play like the old pitfall 3d http://psx.ign.com/articles/152/152101p1.html, which in my opinion was a really crappy game. Turn me on to PS3? NOPE. Need some better games. Need a lot of better games, my ps3 is looking like its ready for ebay.
Kspraydad @ Jun 30th 2007 1:28PM
Thanks nathan for that completely unbelievable post...I'm sure you dropped coin on a PS3 without knowing if their were games to interest you.
What's next...selling your BMW since you've decided it is worthless without a drivers licence?
Sean @ Jul 4th 2007 2:33PM
It's the animation that does it, it looks great the little things the guy does as he's running and jumping and dying. Although it does look like there's some kinks to be worked out.
BigDaddyDavee @ Jun 30th 2007 1:42PM
I am looking forward to this game for sure. I'm glad others thought the same as I did when I watched...the player playing is useless...lol
The only concern I have is the enemy just stood there at times and got shot.
I also wish the camera was a lot closer to the player.
Jitty @ Jun 30th 2007 1:46PM
Wow, this (knocks wood) could possibly be the gears of war equivalent for the ps3...
jou @ Jun 30th 2007 1:54PM
"Need a lot of better games, my ps3 is looking like its ready for ebay."
Dream on. You've never owned a PS3.
Anyway, I don't know what to think of Uncharted. It looks very nice, but Naughty Dog kind of lost my trust with Jak 2.
I absolutely loved the first Jak & Daxter, but Jak 2 was ridiculously difficult and annoying. I'm still having nightmares of restart points kilometers apart and having to zoom around Haven City in that zoomer, touching one of those "guards" by accident and getting killed in five seconds. Jesus I hated that game, what a disappointment it really was :(
I can only hope that Uncharted comes with sensible difficulty. At my age a game starts gathering dust very quickly if I have to try a boss fight or some pixel-perfect platforming section 165 times before clearing it...
What ever happened to difficulty levels? Easy for impatient losers like me and more difficult for those who can handle it...
Who Flang Poo @ Jun 30th 2007 2:39PM
I agree with nathan, i really do not have much quality games for my PS3 and Drakes Fortune has great visuals but, the game play needs a lot of work. My PS3 is ready for ebay too because it really has nothing to offer so far besides Resistance, and resistance is just a basic shooter. I would not sell my PS3 just yet there is still a few good titles im hearing about which might change my mind , but Drakes Fortune isn't one of those games that will change my mind and the decision will be tougher for me because I own all 3 consles, i almost never use my Wii, and my 360 is killing in games and online. I realy want to get use out of my PS3 because im mad i spent all that money on it and hopefully they get some good titles to change my mind.
Brandon @ Jun 30th 2007 2:47PM
@jou It seems that you hate Jak 2 because it was hard. Sure it was difficult, but that is enough to call what otherwise was a great, deep, long game into something horrible.
I dont know about you, but I find a game rewarding when its difficult, it makes victory all the sweeter. I aggree Jak 2 was hard, but not impossible.
I think I am the most excited by the platforming. You can shoot a gun in pretty much any game nowadays, but solid "climb anywhere" gameplay is hard to come by. I havnt had a good platforming fix since the Prince of persia games, and a little bit with daxter. So while some of you scoff at there not being tons of guys to shoot and having to get to places, thats the part of the game im looking forward to the most.
sammy @ Jun 30th 2007 3:25PM
I think the footage seemed a little empty...the graphics are fairly solid.
It looks like it is very early in the game though and I imagine there is a lot more in store.
If it opens out a bit more and offers a fair degree of variety it could be worth looking at.
I think there are stronger contenders out there. But we have seen so little of this. It hard to judge.
insane257 @ Jun 30th 2007 3:35PM
Not sure what the big deal is over this. graphics look amazing, but the gameplay looks plain and boring. (dont attack me!) i could be wrong, but lets wait til it comes out until we get our hopes up
upz @ Jun 30th 2007 3:42PM
I like how he takes forever aiming for the headshot, then jitters at the last second and misses.
Naaiif @ Jun 30th 2007 3:55PM
Looks like a truly next gen experience, never before have i seen a character move so human like in a game. The guy playing kind of sucks though.
The offline will definitely be better than Gears, i hate the animation in Gears btw, but if there's no online then everyone will say Gears is better.
Nowadays games need some form of online to be recognised as AAA, unless they're really LONG. I'm looking at you Oblivion.
BTW was the video lagging for anyone else? I'm not sure if it was the actual game or the adverts on the site lagging my video.
sammy @ Jun 30th 2007 5:48PM
Another thing that must be taken into account is the fact it is not a presentation. It is someone who clearly has very little ability or experience with the game shambling aimlessly through what is most likely the incomplete untweaked opening level.
It is never going to show a game in its best light.
I guessthis is the calm before the storm. I am sure there will be plenty of set pieces to keep things exciting. They
have a firm pedigree as a developer.
Bangbang... @ Jun 30th 2007 5:07PM
First the good:
Graphics look good (water, characters,etc)
Gameplay looks solid. has a prince of persia in the jungle type of feel to it.
And now the bad:
The screen tearing is horrible. Every time Drake moves left or right (or pretty much any direction but straight) there is a huge split between what is drawn on the bottom of the screen and what's being drawn up top.
The a.i. is extremely bad. Enemies dont flank, or press the advantage or even work together. They just run up, one at a time untill they all die. And even though they take cover, they like to come out of it and stand in the open to shoot at the player(and they arent even good shots)
The unknown:
The aiming. Is the guy playing the game that bad at shooters or are the controls that loose?
The camera. It looks like its primarily controlled by the game but allows the user to pan it left and right. At one point in the video the guy has to clear a ravine. He trys to pan the camera to get a better look at his position, but it snaps back into place. He is then forced to awkwardly walk back and line up with the jump to make it. Again, did the player suck or is the camera bad?
Motion controls. This is the third video i have seen for this game (joystiq hands on vid, a dev play through, and this video), and no one seems to be able to walk more than two steps on a log without falling off. Is it a broken gameplay mechanic, or does everyone, including the developers, suck at using the sixaxis for tilt functions? I know I sucked at using the sixaxis motion controls in motorstorm and nba 07, but since i didnt see anyone else complain about the controls being "loose" I thought it was just me. These uncharted videos, however, are starting to make me think otherwise.
I remain cautiously optimistic.
Bangbang... @ Jun 30th 2007 5:08PM
sorry guys, that post did not seem that long when i was typing it. :(
nathan @ Jul 1st 2007 2:29AM
I own a PS3 and pretty much the only thing i use it for now is a blue ray player. My 360 gets a hell of a lot more use then my ps3 does. Now that blockbuster rents bluerays i might get a little more use outa the thing, but the xbox live experience will keep me getting the xbox version of any cross platform game.
nathan @ Jul 2nd 2007 1:37AM
and i dont drive a bmw, i drive a landrover duche
Consolcwby @ Jul 2nd 2007 5:34AM
Yeah, okay, dream on....
And now, for something completely different - The Game:
Most people's concerns about the AI is correct, they should be concerned if the game is released in it's current state - which I know it won't. The scripting for the AI was barebones at best, given a few more months of polish, and we'll be probably getting our asses kicked.
For the graphics, this is shaping up to be solid - remember, we are not seeing this in high resolution HD, it's been compressed and is streaming - so, if it looks passable to you, then it'll look great by the time it's released.
And for anyone who thinks that ANY GAME coming out is a chance to bash the PS3, which is innocent to the whole Great Sega Debate, then fuck off. We're commenting on a fucking game, you twats, NOT the whole system. Find a thread for that, and go to it. Just keep it on fucking topic, eh?
nathan @ Jul 2nd 2007 12:32PM
i started by saying that this game looks like it plays like crap, and upon further review it does. Then u came in and started talking trash about me beaver drip. Claiming i dont have ps3 and other crap. Treating me like im a little kid. I am not a twelve teen year old kid. Im a guy who has a ps3 and is upset with my purchase do to a lack of games. A lack of a decent online system as well. So dont go trash talking me because i think i wasted my freaking money on this thing. because its the truth.
