To End All Wars plans to end all FPS titles
You can't really see it, but the subject line is supposed to come off in a snide way. First off, if you're planning to be the end-all to FPS titles, selecting World War I probably isn't the best choice to make. Can you say "yawn"? Sure, it's not WWII, but seriously, dig into a trench and sit there blindly firing for a few hours? We're not being facetious. Developers Kuju want to create the most accurate representation of the conflicts in Europe ever made.Publisher Ghostlight explains further: "Period locations will be recreated in lavish detail, only weaponry of the time will be available and character design will reflect the uniforms and style of the era ... we believe that To End All Wars will be an exceptional title that will form the basis of a new gaming franchise." Who knows, maybe it will. Perhaps a realistic recreation of a dirty, violent struggle is just what FPS titles need. We still think WWI isn't the best choice for recreation. Trenches are scary, but perhaps that's the draw. What do you guys think?

Holy CRAP that sounds boring.
Toby @ Jul 4th 2007 9:30PM
reminds me of Red Orchestra, and i enjoy that game. Im a realism freak, so this might just be up my alley.
Tim @ Jul 4th 2007 9:47PM
I think this will appeal to people who like accurately recreated realistic games. I for one would not mind seeing how this one turns out.
I mean sure it COULD be boring if it is EXACTLY realistic, but they are making a game after all so it has to be even a little fun. Well see.

do ppl really want a realistic game ... war sucks... your ps3 should stop working the time u get shot
Kevin @ Jul 5th 2007 12:06AM
I actually wondered if they'd ever make a WWI game. I'm pretty excited to see how this turns out.

What a hateful write up this is... WWI wasn't all about sitting in a trench and taking potshots. This war is so misunderstood in the USA it's rather pathetic. At the beginnig and ending of the war combat was more than a little lively. And as for the trenches, what about all the times people were sent “Over the top"? Having to run across No-Man's-Land, dodging machine gun fire, mortar and artillary shells exploding around you while the guys next to you are screaming because they got caught up in barbed wire - not to mention the introduction of flamethrowers, tanks, airplanes, and chemical warfare (or even defending against a rushing hoard of 100,000 screaming men armed with rifles, coming out wave after wave after wave)??? Boring? I think not! I can't wait to join those Tommies and give those Huns a right good thrashing and send them back to Jerryland for glory, God, and country!!! Boring? BOLLOCKS!!!! =P

Well said, Consolcwby.
It's amazing how many American's are ignorant about WWI because it wasn't the "exciting war." If they learned about WW1 maybe they'd understand more the financial motives of the Great War. And a little bit about why WW2 started in the first place.

If they plan to end all FPS, they gotta make it an AO game. Blood has to squirt from their 3D brain particles, while their eyes dangle from a few veins. Their has to be mass gore, and rag doll physics to cause some crazy crime scene imagery.
I have to vomit while playing this game.

Agreed

You are right, I don't see any snideness in the title. Where did anyone say that this was supposed to be the title to end all fps? I suppose that the fact that at the time WWI was said to be "the war to end all wars" was lost on you, but to then quote the developer as saying that the upcoming title "...will form the basis of a new gaming franchise" makes your headline totally senseless.
And what a lack of knowledge relating to the historical record and lack of imagination you show, not to a mention a lack of faith in the developer and potential of the PS3 hardware. For a console that lacks FPS to begin with your pessimism is disturbing.
Well said indeed, Consolcwby, your description has me salivating at the possibilities.

No where in their press release does it say that they are trying to make the "end-all to FPS titles". If you had done a little research, or paid attention in History class you would have known that the title "The War to End all Wars" was what WWI was called before it was called WWI. It was called that because the world had never been involved in such a bloody and destructive war that spanned so many countries. They didn't believe a war like that could ever happen again. Then WWII happened.
As Consolcwby has pointed out. There was a lot more going on in that war then just sitting in trenches. 9,911,000 were killed 21,219,500 were wounded. As the Wikipedia article on WWI says "The First World War began as a clash of 20th century technology and 19th century tactics". It was the first war to use Tanks and Flame-throwers and Chemical Weapons.
Go do a little research next time, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I, you don't have to be interested in WWI but at least show you understand the subject matter before you make "Snide" inaccurate comments about it.
Personally I'd recommend you either revise your original post or delete it completely because it makes you look like an idiot.

There was this one soldier in World War One that captured an entire German machine gun nest by himself and was this big hero. It would be cool if the game followed him.
JamesF @ Jul 5th 2007 2:59PM
It's a myth that the WW1 was all "going over the top" in massed advances. Other activities that a soldier would have to live through in a 2 to 6 week stint in the trenches included:
- reconnaisance patrols
- trench raiding parties
- "snatch squads" aimed at kidnapping an enemy soldier to gather intelligence
Any of the above could form the basis of missions in the game. Also the war was not limited to continental Europe with (for the time) conventional tactics - TE Lawerence could form the interesting basis of a FPS/RPG
Popfrogs @ Jul 5th 2007 5:21PM
Sounds lame to me. Period weapons? Bah. It's not gonna be much fun to man an early German machine gun that overheats and jams. It won't be fun shooting a Lee-Enfield either. At full blast you're getting off 12 shots per minute *snore* and it's only equipped with a 10 round clip. Hope you like hitting triangle to reload every 50 seconds of slow firing mayhem.
WWI hasn't been done before because it was a very, very slow, tedious, boring war and not well suited to video games. The pace picked up in WW2 which is why those games have been so successful.
God help us all if someone makes an American Revolutionary War game where you get to shoot a single shot from a musket then dance around with the Sixaxis to reload a single shot with wadding and powder.
pete @ Jul 5th 2007 6:23PM
popfrogs that game was released like a month or two ago, not on the ps3,pc i think, and some other platform, and i dont know how they implemented reloading

Ugh...these duties have been a part of war since...well, war! Read Sun-Tzu!
Therefore, it is not really a myth that WWI was all about going over the top because the other duties you just mentioned are prerequisite. Trench warfare was the main tactic of advance and defense. Arty the other guys, attack, retreat, defend against counter attack, repeat. The tactics had not caught up to the technology of war, it was slaughter...it is what WWI is known for! It is why the French got trampled in WWII---the Germans figured out how to use the new technology in Blitzkrieg--end game for the French.
I don't, however, think this will be a boring game. I'm somewhat of a history buff and I would love to see period weapons, uniforms, and locations represented accurately in a video game. If they pay as much attention to detail as BiA:HH, I'm sold! And I'm also with #8, that would be cool.
And GL-
I'm American, I'm proficient enough in the history of my country, and if YOU can tell me the name of the man that was assassinated and where he was killed, that started the unfortunate domino of alliances towards world war, you get my respect (without using Wiki the encyclopedia for dummies).
