GAME thanks the PS3 for increased game sales

The UK high street store GAME has today said that the PS3 is responsible for over half of its like-for-like sales boosts since the beginning of the year. GAME have seen a 74.1% increase in total group sales for the first 22 weeks of the year, with a 46.6% like-for-like sales boost in the same period. Of this 46.6%, 22.5% is attributed to PlayStation 3 hardware, software and peripherals.
This is great news and shows that the PS3 is still going strong here in Europe. When the really huge games start getting released, no doubt we'll be seeing an even larger increases in sales, particularly hardware. Peter Lewis comments on this, saying that "higher volumes of new generation platforms will increase hardware participation in the sales mix for the year to January 2008." Which is flowery-speak for "hardware will make up a larger part of overall sales in the next six months," which makes sense. As the end-of-year games splurge occurs, more people will be persuaded into buying consoles.

I think the major question is why, with no major games released there (until last couple of weeks), how is PS3 able to achieve that? are European users getting it for Blu-Ray player function?
It's definitely optimistic, with Aussie and European numbers looking up, Sony is finally getting some positive PR.

Simply put, it launched stronger in Europe than it did here. Higher initial stock is the biggest factor, more titles at launch and a stronger overall product (despite the ps2 chips being removed) also help.
I think if the ps3 had launched with the same number of consoles ready to go in both the US and Japan, it's total sales would be around a million higher than they are now. There was huge demand initially, and having the supply for it would have made a major difference in it's holiday numbers.

Mccomber sounds correct. The super US and worldwide re-launch at Xmas time this year should be fantastic with more AAA titles dropping and Europe should be getting a soccer game by then.

That is impressive and not impressive at the same time
-Impressive because there are limited quality games
-Not so impressive because its launch and everyone needs games at launch
Just a question for all you UKers
Do the GAME employees lead you to certain consoles or do they leave you alone?
(here in Ft Mac they try and sell me 360 hardware and games)

I questioned a GAME employee on the PS3 and they said it was selling well. The PS3 stand was at the back of the store though, you had to fight your way past the Massive XBOX360 area to get to it. It looked a little sad but there's a lack of games.
They didn't try to sell me anything though, just asked if they could help me. I am propably rather older than most of yor guys (40), a snotty/ spotty teenager probably sees me as a god of gaming as I started before he was born.

They leave you alone usually allowingyou to make your own choice. But I am surprised anyone would buy off them as they are so over priced on everything.

It's the same as saying "Without adjusting anything, we sold this much more then last year." Sort of like an "all things conidered" year over year figure.
