If you'll pardon the rather heavy handed pun in the title, we can let you in on some choice information regarding Sony console sales in Japan. The week ending the 1st of July saw increased sales for the PS3, PS2 and PSP. We've collated all the interesting statistics into handy bullet points for you, so check them out below. All increases are compared to the week ending the 24th of June.
- PS2: 16,316 sold. An increase of 26%
- PSP: 38,305 sold. An increase of 15%
- PS3: 11,914 sold. An increase of 20%
The PS3 is clearly seeing the effects of the previous week's
releases. Most notably,
Ninja Gaiden Sigma, FolksSoul and perhaps even
Boku no natsu yasumi 3. With figures rising like this from week to week, even before any AAA titles have been released, we should be seeing huge rises once titles like
Lair and
Heavenly Sword start making their way onto the shelves.

I wonder how much difference Lair and Heavenly Sword will have on Japanese PS3 sales. They're western titles, not Japanese. If the PS3 is going to succeed, it will need homegrown Japanese AAA titles instead of western AAA titles.

Japanese sales should pick up, because of some big Japanese games. FolkSoul is a Japanese style game that should sell well. Also Ninja Gaiden Sigma will sell well considering Japanese people didn't buy Xbox's last gen.
Actually NGS will pick up the entire worlds sales.

Doesn't the profit from the PS2's and PSP's help minimize the loss on PS3's?
I mean they have got to be breaking even or close to it and add in software sales...why are they losing money?

I just bought a PSP and downgraded it to 1.50 then upgraded to 3.04-OE firmware. There's nothing sweeter than homebrew on a PSP and it still does the remote play functions with the PS3. I doubt I'll be regretting my purchase any time soon.

great news. I'm glad Sony are doing better now. The PS3 haters can finally shut their mouths. The PS3 is taking over, along with the PSP, i believe the PSP may even take over the DS one day..

Sorry about my first comment I didn't read on the rest of the article where you said
"The PS3 is clearly seeing the effects of the previous week's releases. Most notably, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, FolksSoul"

This, along with recent news that the Wii is close to surpassing the total of 360s sold worldwide, makes for a good news week. :)

Are you crazy? PSP take over the DS? Look, this is great news that Sony is picking up sales, but let's not over hype this. The DS sold 157,435 units. PSP's sales are nowhere near this level. The DS won, move on.

R&C was released in Japan last week and moved 36K or more units...reports are that it too help spike PSP sales for the week after the above report....

@Nick
You do know most stores have price matching and after purchase price adjustments. So if you purchase something, you have the amount of days to return it to go back into the store with just your receipt and get some money back.

Anyone who is buying a PS3 right now with the recent announcement of a post E3 price drop due to the discovery of the post E3 Circuit City ads is a nut. Even if it doesn't turn out to be true, I'd at least wait another 4 days to see if I'd be saving $100.
