Monster Hunter dominates Japanese sales charts

It should be comforting to publishers to see a PSP game do so well. Hopefully, this will encourage Japanese publishers to continue developing for the platform. The top three games for PSP this year so far include Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops.

Thats is really a shock that a PSP did so well considering the Japanese glut of Wii and DS non-games. The article also points out that Japan is becoming more Japanese developer centric than it used to be, with the first western game coming in at 17 being GTA. That doesnt bode well for the hopes sony is pinning on games like God of war for the psp, and Lair and Heavenly Sword for the PS3.

last time I checked. 1.2 million units of the game moved in Japan. I really don't see the hype in this game, but at least a PSP IP is becoming a serious franchise. much like GTA did for PSP.
Frankly, I think Crisis Core will shatter the record, but we have to wait and see.

It sold more than Pokémon Diamond and Pearl? That's astonishing. And all of that without infrastructure mode! It imagine how much better it could do if when it comes out in the West if it had online play... eh Capcom? eh?.... Capcom? Capcom.... eh?
Okay, enough hinting now.

And it still hasn't got perfect multiplayer - wait til a MMO version appears

To say that MHP sold more than Pokemon is misleading, for the figures don't include the sales of the latter in the 4th quarter of 2006.
txa1265 @ Jul 9th 2007 7:44AM
Exactly - the Pokemon games had sold more than 5 million before it launched in the US, where it sold well over a million in less than 4 days.
Monster Hunter is selling *extremely* well and selling some PSP's as well, but let's not resort to 'phony stats' to justify it - it only invites comparisons and fact-checking, which make things look bad.

Agreed... I can only hope the stateside release not only has the infrastructure/MMO-ish online mode, but shorter load times too. I loved playing the first game but the load times were a bit too long.

I just hope it dose just as well here in the US. That would make a big statement and help Sony's sales of PSPs (and maybe the PS3
MHF2 should do a lot better then MHF because it has major improvements:
-shorter load times
-more equipment
-up to HR20
-less grind
-MHF item transfer (only lvl 3 and less)
