PS3 price drop causes a 2800% jump in sales at Amazon.com
It already looks like the price drop for the PlayStation 3 is having an effect on sales. After official confirmation of the price drop, sales at Amazon.com for the 60GB PS3 have spiked by 2800% and have overtaken the Wii and Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s as the best selling item in the Video Game category.
While it's hard to judge the success of the price cut in only one day, it's interesting to see how many people are snapping up the new $499 PS3. A price cut of $100 is not insignificant but the PS3 is still the most expensive console, and industry watchers were curious to see just how many people would be moved to purchase the console after a 'mere' 17% price drop.
Judging from the early evidence though, the answer is 'a lot.'

can you say... "lumines" ;)
niccce!!!! and let's not forget the 5 free Blu-Ray DVD offer.

>At the end of the day, the price of entry to play a PS3 game is still $500
yes, but there's a huge difference between 40+GB of storage, Wifi capability and memory card reader built-in.
Also, PS3 didn't increase the price with the introduction of a higher SKU... unlike some other company did. ;)
All and all, a good day for Sony
Thomas @ Jul 9th 2007 7:04PM
I can't wait to see the numbers for this month... or at least for the month of august.
Brian @ Jul 9th 2007 7:05PM
Let me say that that Brian does not speak for all Brian's. At least my PS3 will last 10 years not ten months like some other console
pete @ Jul 9th 2007 7:10PM
thank you all, i was gonna say the same thing, got caught up in work come back and ya'll took them word right outta my mouth. wifi, card reader, 40g+ FTW

HOLY CRAP
To be honest, the PS3's lack of exclusives was causing me to play my 360 (a lot) more, but as I see, there's still hope yet!
YES!
Arno @ Jul 9th 2007 7:17PM
It probably went from selling 1 to selling 28. Haha.
Andy @ Jul 9th 2007 7:26PM
I love the price cut but I do not like the 80GB model. $100 price cut means you can buy two games!
JKPierce @ Jul 9th 2007 7:27PM
Ha, ha!
Yeah, but no.
The 360 Elite is at 27th, one below the PlayStation 3's previous slot on Amazon. Pokemon Pearl is at 29th with Zelda: Twilight Princess at 30th. Further reference reaches back to the World of Warcraft expansion at 41st. So we're not talking little numbers.
It's also impressive, considering ten thousand units a week isn't a particularly small number.
orntharon @ Jul 9th 2007 7:32PM
I wonder how much fear of the new, cheaper to produce, 60Gb PS3s lacking full backward compatibility factors into this number.
Consolcwby @ Jul 9th 2007 7:36PM
I wonder what the trolls will say about this trend?... at least PS3 owners have piece of mind, and with the fall/winter lineup coming - it's all starting to look good!
Say what you want about Karayzee Ken - but he was right all along. =P
NeverSage @ Jul 9th 2007 7:43PM
$500? That's pretty steep for a videogame console. It's a good thing they already got rid of their old $500 sku. Otherwise they would have had to lower the price to a reasonable level.
Naaiif @ Jul 9th 2007 7:55PM
I personally thought they should have kept the 20gb SKU and offered it for $399. Then that would have really sold a lot. Still a price cut is always great news, but the $600 version is a complete rip off. 20 gigs more and motorstorm.
rodsky @ Jul 9th 2007 7:55PM
if ms drops their price i wonder how many of those will sell

Got to remember, business is involved here. Having 3 SKUs is completely difficult and more pricey to manufacture - ESPECIALLY with the differences in boards cuz of WiFi, card readers, and different HDDs. I'm pretty sure they're not even in retail anymore, which means they don't even need to 'get rid of it' in a sense. But if they're still in retail, then yes I agree that it would be a good move =).
orntharon @ Jul 9th 2007 8:11PM
I live in Japan and 60Gb PS3s have been going for about $440usd (55,000 yen) for about 4 or 5 months now. But this price fluctuates depending on where you go. This disconnectedness between retailers in Japan can usually lead to good values for the consumer going from shop to shop looking for the better value. The used PS3 costs, the cheapest I've seen, around $340usd.
So Japan probably won't be seeing a price drop, but around 10,000 PS3s sell a month, not too shabby.
Good for North America to see a price drop. The problem is that there's already a trend for complaining about everything surrounding the PS3 so even this won't be enough. Once the "real" games start rolling I think this will subside, but how long until that happens and how long will Sony's name be rolled in the mud. How many more "mistakes" will Sony's PR machine make along the way?
In a world where everyone is hating on Sony there seems to be little room for mistakes.
Waruwaru @ Jul 9th 2007 8:13PM
I was thinking to get one just because of the backwards compatibility issue...
Dahk @ Jul 9th 2007 8:22PM
OH!
If you notice, the PS3 has a 4.5/5 rating! =D! Not bad considering average customer reviews rarely get 5/5. Lol!

I'm not sure why some people are bashing on the ps3. $500 is a damn good price for a blue ray player and video game system that is capable of 1080p. Also the less than %1 failure rate means that you are buying a sturdy piece of hardware.
Did I also mention that the PS3 is on a 10 year plan . . . hmmm that's 50 bucks a year.
Blue ray players and movies have also been outselling HD DVD by quite a bit so this format will not die out.
All in all, good move for Sony and I'm not a fan boy I own a Wii and just choose to buy this system over 360 for the reasons I mentioned above.
Cheers.

This sounds oddly like the spike in 360 sales due to the Extension warranty. BTW 2600% isnt that big when you compare it to the previous sales, being one console. so they sold 26 more consoles and make it look like a mass victory. How Witty.

More importantly the PS3 won't brick on you with the Ring-of-Death crap that a LOT of 360 users have to deal with on a daily basis, I'd rather spend an extra $100 and get a better quality product period.

LOL, ok so let me get this straight, a spike, rather it be a big spike or not is purely a opinion but a spike nonetheless, and you have to bring up the 360 as some soft of counter argument? wait,....counter argument for what, this had nothing to do with the 360, something clearly positive about the ps3, and you had to shit all over it.....the next time you want to shit on something make sure you shit on your 360 to keep it from overheating and getting the red rings of death you sad sack of shit
@Heh
I can't tell you how many fanboys claim to own a ps3 but can't stand to hear anything positive about it or immediately quick to bash it and defend some other console, I mean come on, why are you getting mad when he is stating the truth, face it you waste of human sperm, the 360 have a high rate of failure and even microsoft admits it...not all the "alleged" ps3 problems you have changes that
"Good job believing Sony's bs. n.n b "
What the hell????? your telling someone else that they fell for Sony lies and your the one who claimed to have 2 ps3s while everyone else just had one.....owwww that's right your one of those dickfaces that claims to own a console so that they can't be called a fanboy for bashing it...
@EdgeofBlade
"But I guess some people just like to be manipulated. Makes them feel like they are part of something bigger. Like a hive mind.
And I guess some people like to troll or masterbate to monkey porn or put fingers into other people asses, in your case I guess its all of the above..........that would explain why you pulled up your web browser, typed in ps3fanboy.com, scanned the website to find anything positive so that you could find some way to bash it
Price drop after 9 months. NINE. Last time a PlayStation got a price reduction this fast, Sony was ESTABLISHING themselves for the first time. I thought this was a mature product line..."
Sony cutting to price could be viewed as clever manufacturing cost cutting or a sign of desperation or something else, it could be viewed as anything but only sony knows the truth..... so get your finger out your ass and sit down

lol. Just buy a computer. the whole attraction to consoles is that you're buying one machine that will last you half a decade and be able to play games that come out 5 years after the console releases.
Now, just 6 months after the PS3's release, it's already updating the hardware. Lmao. Watch how games will come out in two years and they'll say, "made for PS3 version 2.4" or, "made for 120 GB model" this jump right here marks the beginning of consoles slowing becoming updatable PC's, and it sickens me.
ARobinso0502 @ Jul 10th 2007 1:14AM
If you compare system for system, the PS3 is a much better console then the XBox360. The GPU, cell processor and memory options with the PS3 are the best in the market. While maybe the price is expensive, YOU ARE TRUELY GETTING WHAT YOU PAY FOR. My opinion is that the lack of RUMBLE and game titles at launch really hurt the PS3. Also, there's a major different in the business models between the two consoles. M$ controls almost everything to do with the XBox360, Sony left it up to the game manufactures to develop/improve titles as they deem fit. If Sony would of had the top 10 games ready at launch using the feature capabilities of the PS3 we all would be having a different discussion right now. Just think, todays titles are "alleged" to only be using 30%-40% of the consoles actual capabilities. That fact gives us all alot to look forward too.
ARobinso0502 @ Jul 10th 2007 1:17AM
Oh... BTW, I forgot to mention, We dont pay for online game play currently with the PS3. So that's a savings in itself.
NeverSage @ Jul 10th 2007 1:34AM

Hm... I find that unlikely. This isn't really the first time for this. If you remember the N64 needed the memory expansion to play some games. That didn't bring about the beginning of the end. The only thing I could see happening is some games for 360 requiring a hard drive. For however much the PS3 is faulted, it's pretty damn futureproof.

Konami Does not believe the $100 Price cut for PS3 may help. This may be just another nail in the PS3 Coffin. Sony is facing an economic issues from there developers. It just does not make sense to make a game exclusive for the PS3 with it's installed base. As a developer it's like committing suicide.
Konami sees little PS3 price cut impact
Tue Jul 10, 2007 3:17AM EDT
By Kiyoshi Takenaka
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sony Corp.'s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) $100 price cut for the PlayStation 3 is not enough to turn the fortunes of the game console, which has suffered a slow start, an executive of game software maker Konami Corp. (9766.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said.
Sony cut the PS3 price to $500 in the United States on Monday, in a bid to ignite demand. But it still costs twice that of Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) Wii console, whose $250 price and motion-sensing controller have made it a best-seller despite its lack of cutting-edge graphics.
"I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," Kazumi Kitaue, the head of Konami's North American and European operations, told Reuters in an interview ahead of this week's E3 video game industry trade show.
"I don't expect a substantial impact ... With $500, you can buy a personal computer."
Sony has packed its cutting-edge technology including a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player and high-performance chips in the PS3. The advanced functions enable life-like graphics, but have driven up production costs.
Its high price and a lack of attractive software have been cited as major reasons for the PS3's plight.
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN0924355620070710
Kitaue said Konami may need to expand the target hardware for its blockbuster fighting game Metal Gear Solid, which has so far been developed for Sony's PlayStation machines, to other consoles in the future to recoup development costs.

I live in Houston and at 5:00 I left work to pick up a PS3 from Circuit City to get the free controller. They had been sold out since noon. I had to get them to do a remote purchase of the last console in the area, 15 miles away.
People are pretty pumped.

This is amazing news all around. Amazing for the Blu-Ray industry, and right before E3...we may see the PS3 as the number one selling console for a couple of weeks at least.
For all of the wannabe Microsoft employees or real Microsoft employees trying to rep your broke-ass system...begone, clowns. People see that the 360 is actually more expensive with the inevitable repair costs. I mean, a three year warantee is basically saying: "If you buy a 360, we KNOW that it will break within three years---and likely multiple times."
It's inevitable, folks. Sony owns from this day on, all of the way through the holiday season, and beyond. Xbox trolls, re-assume your position as second/third place in the minds of games around the world.---12
