PSN down for unscheduled maintainance; All countries affected [UPDATE]

It's true, try it for yourself. When trying to log into the PlayStation Network we are met with a wee bubble stating that its use has been suspended. We've had our *ahem* European and Japanese friends try logging in too and they have the same message. Clearly Sony is wheeling out an update of some kind, though we wouldn't dare to speculate what it could be.
Ha, as if. Things we would like to see include:
- PSN Store redesign
- Home beta
- LittleBigPlanet beta
- mass roll-out of trailers, demos and other videos
- a sign up form for a lifetime supply of cheese and biscuits
[UPDATE] The network itself is now back up. The store, however, is still down. Instead we see a very interesting screen stating that it's undergoing maintainance. Interestingly, the style is very different to any part of the PSN we've seen before. Could this be the PSN Store redesign we were after? We'll keep you informed.
[UPDATE] Image replaced to show new screen.
[UPDATE] Store is back up and looking ... the same. For all territories. Still, we don't think this was a coincidence. We suppose Sony are doing some backend updates in preparation for whatever they have planned for this week. We'll see what happens.
[Thanks Kyle]

Hey my guess could be as wrong as cheese and biscuits but what if they're preparing to broadcast the Sony Keynote and all that other fun E3 stuff over the PSN network that would be awesome.. i want a Killzone GamePlay Trailer more than anything though

Maybe the story is being redesigned to better accomodate new content like music and movies. It was going to be something that had to be done, considering connect was canned in order to be incorperated with PSN.
OrganicShadow @ Jul 10th 2007 12:56PM
Cheese AND biscuits? Why not just CHEESE BISCUITS? Those things are awesome. Get them at the grocery store all the time. A little packet of mix, add some milk, plop onto a baking pan and give it about 10 minutes. They come in garlic/cheese too.
Anywho, yeah, not at home to check that PSN but hopefully you guys will keep me updated on it.
Of course by the time I get home the PSN will be so crowded with users that the bandwidth will be 28k speeds. Unless they added a crapload of servers to deal with the bandwidth issues I don't know if I even want to try until this weekend.
Can you guys let us know if there are any speed improvements once it's up?

It could be something to do with the "Video Network" think Tretton was talking about in the YouTube video announcing the price drop...

time to speculate! funny, store goes down when e3 kicks up, major update, 2.o maybe. redesign as you have said.
Enon777 @ Jul 10th 2007 1:04PM
A very reliable inside source (my magical talking cockroach) has told me that the maintenance was to activate an unknown cell chip. This chip will then transform our PS3s in to robots that will go out and destroy all 360s. Aaaahh, yes! Microsoft....All your base are belong to us!!!
borland502 @ Jul 10th 2007 1:31PM
This is just a cynical thought, but it could just be a glitch in the matrix. Even Amazon and Google have gone down on occasion. I hope it *is* preparation for something cool though.
tony @ Jul 10th 2007 1:33PM
well i just logged into the store and i havent found anything thats differen on there yet. looks the same to me and nothing is new. so, what was the maintainince for then?
grass @ Jul 10th 2007 1:44PM
Ha, I dunno if I would go so far as to say, sony is in big trouble.....sony is finally getting their act together. people were just a little to unforgiving before. patience folks, patience.
balaam @ Jul 10th 2007 1:45PM
im thinking one international store
Tosh @ Jul 10th 2007 1:49PM
L1 now moves back and R1 goes forward (like the web browser's back and forward). Nothing else new at the moment.
borland502 @ Jul 10th 2007 2:10PM
New Theory: They are doing something cool, but in preparation for it someone goofed and brought down the production site. I call it my unified speculation theory.
Popfrogs @ Jul 10th 2007 2:34PM
@Tosh: Thanks for something meaningful. I still wish the store was integrated into the XMB somehow, making it simple to grab videos and demos without hunting through the awful storefront.
mccomber @ Jul 10th 2007 2:37PM
It was probably just making sure things are in place to support the traffic that will come from E3 videos and such. There's going to be a lot of people trying to download stuff when they start putting it up there, and the last thing they need now is for it to go down or be incredibly slow.
WhackMushroom @ Jul 10th 2007 2:54PM
lame .. OMG bill gates farted BRB!
Postlik @ Jul 10th 2007 3:31PM
They did change something. You can now use the r1 and l1 buttons to go back and forward in the store.
Nick @ Jul 10th 2007 4:42PM
I would guess some back end maintenance to make it somehow work with Home Beta for all the testers to be able to get into PSN from within the Home environment.
The Goalkeeper @ Jul 10th 2007 4:52PM
i dont know why im waiting so impatiently for HOME
Consolcwby @ Jul 10th 2007 7:55PM
Wow. I'd file this under: Much ado about nothing. The OS on the boxes are probably being patched, that's all. =P
