Games to be launched from within Home

At the Sony Press Conference today at E3, Phil Harrison demonstrated a feature that is new to Home. PS3 games will be able to be launched directly from inside Home, from both a Blu-Ray disc and from the hard drive. Reminding us that the feature we have been asking for for a while, Harrison stepped into a room with eleven other people in the virtual world. He then proceeded to invite them all into a game of Motorstorm, which booted straight from Home's PSP menu system into the multiplayer lobby, with all the people he invited ready to start.
After crashing out, Harrison decided that he'd played enough Motorstorm for now and quit the game straight back into Home. This is a feature we're very excited about and we cannot wait to take full advantage of it once the open beta hits within the next couple of months.

Nice move Sony, but do you want to know what feature we want even more?
IN-GAME XMB ACCESS!!!!
I hope Phil is listening, because we want this feature, and we want it NOW!!!

Veruca Salt much? Geez, TheGuy, remind me never to invite you to a party.
Anyways, this is a great announcement since I was worried about how Home was going to go about launching games. Can't wait to give it a shot!

Hah - you said M$ instead of MS! Take that Microsoft!
I bet Bill is crying his eyes out into a giant pile of money right now.

ndoerr @ Jul 11th 2007 8:08PM
@ psn:ummfada -- my last name? I had nothing to do with this post. If you're going to vaguely insult me, at least make sure it's on something I wrote.
Dahk @ Jul 11th 2007 8:31PM
Jeez watch your pride guys. I don't think Bill would've even wanted that on the xbox - it's not their thing. THAT and he doesn't care anymore, because he's gone soon lol.
I full agree with TheGuy though, I want in-game XMB access - like. NOW.
Dahk @ Jul 11th 2007 8:32PM
LOL @ Nick.
I was gonna mention that too.
psn:ummfada @ Jul 11th 2007 8:54PM
I sincerely apologize

Maybe this will be the new XMB. All they need is a VAIO for the internet, a PS3 for folding, stereo for music, Bravia for the videos, a Sony camera for the pics, and tool box for settings, it actually seems do able.

According to I think Phil's statement a while back, you'll have the choice to run HOME as your OS or the XMB. And by then, you'll be able to access said OS from within any game, as part of the deal that each developer must alocate a certain amount of memory to the OS. I read a comparison on that detail between Sony XMB and M$ Dashboard. Sony uses requires more memory to run the XMB in games. Maybe in the hopes that HOME would be the next XMB.
Hmmm...?

This is sweet.
PSN is lacking (..everything?) a sense of community that is somehow present in 360's Live.. despite Live's bare bones-ness, it can be accessed from within games and works with them, which makes it standard no matter what you're playing. Good move, Sony!
Can't wait for this sexy piece of hardware to be put to work.

"im still looking for a video of the keynote .. any ideas? anyone?"
Absolutely Ferris,
Go to ignDOTcom and the Sony Conference is split into 3 parts. Or watch G4 Tv...they will probably replay the conference many times. Just search for it on tivo, or your DVR.
At the end, they show more Killzone 2, and they show a developer playing the game for the 2 minute demo.

This is good, but it worries me that they didn't mention whether cross-game invites and an in-game XMB will be available.
If I'm already playing a game, and a friend pops up ('real life' friends, especially), will I have to quit back to Home and hope that they are still in Home? At the moment, trying to actually hook up a game with my friends involves pre-organizing a game or PHONING THEM!

I wish Kevin Kelly at Joystiq could learn how to type. Alot of what he wrote up is missing words or has nonsense words instead. It's confusing to read E3 coverage from someone blogging from a RAZR with faulty text prediction. :)
