Movie download service on its way to PS3, PSP "really soon"

You may think Sony just started working on this feature, but according to Dille, it sounds like it's been in the pipes for a while. "If we launch it and it's not right, we're going to get creamed. So we want to make sure we get the consumer experience right, get the right content, and we're working really hard on it. And I don't think we're talking about years, I think this is something we could get behind really soon." If they plan to launch it soon, that would be fantastic! Could this be another feather in their Tokyo Game Show hat? We guess we'll have to wait until mid- or late September to find out!

Cool idea - but not sure if I want to wait a day for something to d/l from the playstation store.
Speed that up, and I'd do it.
tcbrooks @ Jul 13th 2007 5:04PM
"really soon"...just like the demos they said where coming "sson"
humpty @ Jul 13th 2007 4:33PM
Not for me. I want to own the physical media (BD) that my movie is on... so, i can sell it, play it on another BD player of any kind, keep it forever, so its encoded at the highest bitrate possible, includes all extras/bonuses, includes uncompressed soundtracks, etc, etc.
Now, a video on demand/rental type service with hd content i can get into.
Popfrogs @ Jul 13th 2007 4:45PM
Yeah, the PS Store is way too pokey for movies. They sped up the interface but still don't have crap for bandwidth (or it's capped at something sad like 50KB/sec). It's trivially easy to add bandwidth but they have to be willing first. The recent E3 barrage showed just how little they dole out.
A music service would be nice too. If you could play Skate and drop to the XMB, pick some songs online that you want to buy and create an in-game playlist instead...that'd be awesome. I imagine this has a huge tie-in with Home also.
Andy @ Jul 13th 2007 4:54PM
I have yet to spend any money over the PSN store. I would have, had Warhawk been online only but I can buy it at retail.
drdre74 @ Jul 13th 2007 5:10PM
Yeah like everyone is saying speed is the thing. I just got my PS3 this week and man is the downloads slow. Took me like 4 hours to download th Ninja Gaiden demo. WTF!
Gideon @ Jul 13th 2007 5:19PM
That's really weird... I easily download demo's and trailers with 10Mbit/s (with a 20Mbit/s line)... Seems fast enough for me. (by the way, I live in the Netherlands)
GRT @ Jul 13th 2007 5:23PM
Yeah, the Playstation Store is painfully slow for me, too.
But I bet they want the PSP with Video-out on the marketplace before they launch this service.
Andy @ Jul 13th 2007 5:24PM
Won't they have to have three versions of videos. A PSP version, a widescreen hdtv version and a full screen sdtv version?
andres @ Jul 13th 2007 5:26PM
wasnt there a joystiq interview with Kaz in which he stated they are unsure about the movie download. And that its still in talks for it to come out?
humpty @ Jul 13th 2007 5:34PM
Ive got no problems with the speed of downloads.. its comaprable to downloading on my PC... im in central Canada.
Eric @ Jul 14th 2007 8:01PM
My money is on this feature coming with Home.
Stellarpimp @ Jul 13th 2007 5:53PM
Download speeds are horrible compared to my computer. I'm on a 3.5meg line and downloading shouldn't take but a few minutes. True its no T1/T3 line but I mean damn...the same size file on computer takes roughly 4 to 5 times as long on the PSN.
This is something that truely needs to be fixed prior to Home hitting the masses.
Ian @ Jul 13th 2007 5:55PM
Yup, it would be really cool to watch a movie on the PSP remotely. 10 minutes in to the movie, when the novelty has worn off and we've all shown it off to our friends, we'd ditch it like a last gen console!
Stop f'ing about with trying to beat Microsoft and concentrate on the things that matter, pleeeeeeeeease... Demos, games, some more demos and some games. Firmware 2.0 would be nice as well.
ryano @ Jul 13th 2007 6:39PM
pfft, useless.
now give me a PSP redesign with two analog sticks and extra shoulder buttons! come on chop, chop Sony!
pete @ Jul 13th 2007 7:41PM
I THINK that whats good for the geese is good for the gander, some people will dig this feature, dont know why but it will be there. im more of a physical media type of guy but some uber nerds out there want to dl instead og going to best buy or the rent spot. besides yall here ms blew satellite and cable in on demand movie sales, sony wants a piece of the pie too. besides i was impressed with e3 and this holiday season and before will be bangin, i dont think this distracts or hurst sonys game division
apease @ Jul 13th 2007 7:46PM
The one thing they kept saying is they're trying to do something different with movie downloads... my guess is they'll stream stuff that's on TV and radio for free in Home, but charge if you want to save to disk and watch it full-screen. It'd be interesting to see what they do with the theaters... charging for non-full-screen stuff won't fly.
joey2joey @ Jul 13th 2007 7:48PM
You guys must have slow internet. Also you can perform things in the background so you do not have yo not use your ps3. It took me 30 minutes for ninja gaiden to download
CJ @ Jul 13th 2007 8:18PM
The Xbox 360 copy cat services are on their way "soon", and still not as good. Sony is trying too hard to go head on with Microsoft. Adding the PS Store and now trying movies. They have many other things to deal with first. Game demos and games period.
Jldowning @ Jul 13th 2007 10:54PM
@ CJ
Do you really think a company as big as Sony can't do both at the same time.
Also you speak like a true Xbot, out of your ass. Don't comment on things as truth that are not.
Sony is doing Great in thier first party games, and as for 3rd party, thats not really sonys job. I say the more they can give us, the better!
Oh, and Ninja Gaiden took me no more then 10 minutes.
adam @ Jul 14th 2007 1:21AM
Wow Jldowning. Get a grip. Did Cj really hurt your feelings that much. Poor baby, go tell your mommy about it and maybe youll feel better.
Cj is just stating a fact, get over it.
And I dont believe you downloaded NGS demo in 10 minutes. Let me be the first here to say, Bull$hit.
And sony does need to get some demos and more downloadable games on the PSN, and less trailers that are easier to access from you computer. That is just a fact.
But on the subject of downloadable movies, I really dont see it being that successful. Personally I like having the movie on BD or whichever format its on, especially when I pay for it.
rodsky @ Jul 14th 2007 2:03AM
honestly this should have been set up before the system launched
they gotta take it like the original xbox live, gaming only till you know what the hell you are doing it, this generation I will admit, MS has their stuff down with online gaming
BD both hurt and helped the ps3, hurt more I think BD is still a bit to much of a niche thing, but sony wanted to push their blu little baby
GodisaMyth @ Jul 14th 2007 2:03AM
I have K-rappy ass DSL. I have no problem with PS store downloads. I would say that NG demo took about 20 minutes. I live in the west burbs of Chicago. I am using wifi for my PS3.
I wonder why some people with faster connections than me have such slow dl speeds.
Check your connection speed on your PS3 for free at
http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp
check both your PS3 and your PC.
oh, Fernando Rocker...you complain that I troll Wii posts. No, I post on Ps3fanboy and joystiq. Yet here you are on PS3 fanboy.
Keep posting...u make yourself even more of an eediot.
deafraiders @ Jul 14th 2007 9:10AM
I hope it comes with Subtitles for me, as I am deaf
nick @ Jul 14th 2007 11:26AM
would it be free by any chance? cuz if not im just gonna use bittorrent or limewire for it.
Popfrogs @ Jul 14th 2007 11:47AM
@Jon: I'd rather have a "PS3 boat anchor" than a 360. At least one of them will work each time I press the power button and we both know which one.
Keep your fanboy bullshit to yourself, you're in the wrong place to be spouting off like that.
Jldowning @ Jul 14th 2007 2:05PM
@ Adem
It really sounds to me like your the one who got your feelings hurt ;) Please take the time to re-read the first few lines of your post to see what I mean.
My post was a lil funny, while I got out my point, your post was just childish. Please go troll somewhere else.
Jldowning @ Jul 14th 2007 2:12PM
@ Jon
Oh and much like many of the 360 ports look worse on the PS3. You will find, much like Dirt and Oblivion any game optimized on the PS3 will look and run MUCH better then on the 360.
Haze and UT3 use PS3 as its lead platform, so this time around, MY 360 AND yours will get the shaft with those games.
Just do like me and buy both systems, If the game is made with a 360 build, buy it on the 360 (unless its equal for ps3 then get the ps3, less down time when your Xbox is being sent in) And if its made for the PS3, buy it for the PS3.
It works great for me!
Games I will enjoy? Halo 3, Fable 2, MGS4, FFXIII, Haze, UT3, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Mass Effect, Lair, Ect.. ect...
In other words, my exclusive list is bigger then yours ;)
Lp47 @ Jul 16th 2007 3:11AM
Downloading on the ps store is faster than xbox live marketplace. Anyways KAZ said in a joystiq interview that their working on it which they oviously are now. But he doesnt want it to be like itunes. He wants it to be unique, so when people ask why is this so much better than itunes. Well lets just say they wont need to ask in the first place.
Neil @ Jul 16th 2007 7:38AM
There are one or two really aggressive people in this thread, Just chill children, you just make yourself look stupid and immature.
All new ideas are good, it shows Sony are developing and nurturing ideas, credit where credits's due, not very interested in it myself but it'll be worth a look.
Download speed, well, it's ok but NGS took a couple hours for me to download, some things seem quicker than others, perhaps it's a time of day thing.
Great games are coming, but am still enjoying online RFOM & Motorstorm and S-SD-HD.
