Coming from a recent interview with Phil Harrison,
1up was curious why Sony was letting exclusive downloadable content for
Grand Theft Auto IV slip through their fingers. It seems that, perhaps, the PS3 will get their own content for the upcoming classic sandbox game. Phil responded thus: " ... we have a great relationship with Rockstar and we're actually working closely with them on a number of initiatives, so I do know some things that are going on, but I'm not able to share those with you now." Insert theories here.
If we can think of anything, we'd imagine that Sony is trying to get the content for the 360 version over to the PS3 version either as standard Blu-ray extras on the game disc (so they aren't technically breaking the "exclusive downloadable content" clause or whatever), or that there is some more original material planned for the PS3 version down the road. What are your thoughts?
[Thanks, Ciaran!]

you damn straight we are getting some content. microsoft thinks by slutting themselves to one great selling game its gonna make them win a console war.
ummmmm no fags, you need games of all genres. not just halo halo halo halo halo halo.
cheese @ Jul 15th 2007 10:33PM
I bet that whatever additional content we get in game, it will be cool, but another cool thing will be the Playstation HOME extras that will come with GTA IV. Nobody has mentioned that.
Triforceowner @ Jul 15th 2007 10:35PM
Whatever happened to that theory that the $50 million spent on the content was really Microsoft saying, "hay, guys, remember Microsoft was good to you when you think about selling Rockstar ;)." So what happened to that theory?
OrganicShadow @ Jul 15th 2007 10:50PM
I think it either has something to do with extra content, or Sony is trying to make sure that the first "episode"(read: expansion, much like HL2) will come to the PS3 first, or even exclusively.
Regardless of what Sony is cooking up, I don't believe the downloadable content will be exclusive to the 360. It will be about as exclusive to 360 as UT3/Haze will be to the PS3. I don't how much money M$ paid them. They said it themselves that it was to cover the costs of making the content, so it's not like it was an under the table thing for exclusivity.
Ninegauger @ Jul 15th 2007 11:12PM
Well if Microsoft is funding the content I assume they'd put an exclusivity clause on that content.
I assumed Harrison was talking about different games or projects with Rockstar... or just different content for the game.
Incentives? Maybe a bundle... I could see that being not a terrible idea.
humpty @ Jul 15th 2007 11:12PM
Buying for exclusive extra content is stupid... what is the purpose of this?
A GTA fan without a console is going to have to decide with between a PS3/360. At launch the games are identical.. the 1st extra content pack doesnt come until March of next.. then, you still have to BUY it. MS isnt going to give it to you for free.
So, what advantage are they getting for their $50 million? So, they can stick a sticker on it say "Extra content you can buy in 5 months!"...
They should have given Rockstar $100 million to make it enirely exclusive... and actually move consoles.
Berkleyj @ Jul 15th 2007 11:26PM
There isnt going to be anything He just said to get everyone hyped (they have a habit of doing thing like this). Its basicly like this:
They ask him about GTA4
A1: Uhhhh it wont have any exclusive content
A2: We are working closely with Rockstar but Im not allowed to tell you anything
Which one would you pick obviously Answer 2. Basically He couldnt just say "Yeah... it wont get any exclusive content"
I dont really want addon missions anyway whats the point in playing if you cant beat it then run around with unlimited ammo killing everything which is my favorite thing by the way. Anyway I still get the game
skridlow @ Jul 16th 2007 12:03AM
I think this will pertain more closely to home trophies, wallpapers, etc. for home as well implementation of the new controller. Have any of you guys read the in depth info at immersion's website? Oh man, it's really deep and makes you wonder what Sony has up their sleeves. I also have a theory on this being why M$ is suing immersion, can anyone say next-gen rumble...
qwerter @ Jul 16th 2007 12:05AM
make a cheat to beat the game cause i absolutely suck at all of the games but..gosh darnit i love playin them, so do that for me plz i own bout half of the series
sirpilf @ Jul 16th 2007 12:06AM
@4
there is no way two episodic downloads costs $50 million to develop, killzone 2 the entire game is what... $20 million?
eclipse27 @ Jul 16th 2007 12:09AM
its not that the DLC costs 50 mil to make, its just that M$ will do anything to keep good things away from Sony
drdre74 @ Jul 16th 2007 12:22AM
well this is the thing that gets my thinking. I want to get the PS3 version because I've always bought it and played it on PS2 but at the same time when march comes around I know i would have beaten it already and it'll be just sitting. So why not get the 360 version that in March i'll be able to dust it off and get some more joy out of it. If Sony doesnt say they have content for sure I'm just going to have to jump ship and get it for the 360. Holla!!!!!!
BlackBeltJones @ Aug 2nd 2007 7:19AM
I believe that the PS3 will eventually get some content but your theory is completley off base. There is no way that:
A) The PS3 would get the 360's DLC content on the gamedisc day 1(then it wouldn't be bonus content, it would just be part of the game.Plus it isn't supposed to come out till spring 2008)
B) Rockstar would make one group of customers pay for content and the other group not pay.
If Microsoft's "exclusive" deal with Rockstar is similar to Sony's "exclusive" deal with Konami then you can bet that PS3 will have the same bonus content, just a little later.
afr @ Jul 16th 2007 12:26AM
what would be highly embarrasing for Microsoft (remember, GTA was first on Playstation!) is if SONY got Microsoft's "exclusive" content, included on the disc, or, and this is far more likely, exclusive SONY content on the disc, as opposed to having to pay for it, i am already springing $150 AU on a limited edition of GTAIV anyway, give us some extra contenet ;)
Nick @ Jul 16th 2007 12:23AM
The interview from the GTIV game designers when quoted on the 360 DLC a few months back already mention in passing that "work was being done on DLC for PS3 as well." It just got passed over in all the 360 hype about the article.
Stef Geiger @ Jul 16th 2007 12:27AM
While we're on the topic of GTA IV, doesn't anyone else think that it's going to be delayed? It's sounding like they're SERIOUSLY behind. They pretty much have two months left and the demo they (briefly) showed at E3 didn't have weapons, voices or missions implemented. People have suggested that it's an early build and they're actually further along, but I'm doubtful.
Kxpuc @ Jul 16th 2007 12:47AM
i'd go with the pre-packaged extra's since that's the easiest route without there being too many issue's. and they could "blame" the fact the 360 didn't have it b/c it's on a DVD and you had to download the extra's instead
mccomber @ Jul 16th 2007 1:09AM
At one point I thought Rockstar had said both platforms would get their own exclusive content. Then again, Peter Moore made a pretty big point out of the 360 being the only place to get the "full Grand Theft Auto 4 experience", so that would sort of throw a wrench into that. I'm going to buy it for whichever console gets the best core experience, so that's that.
Same with a lot of other titles coming this fall; here's to buying a lot of ps3 versions.
acedoh @ Jul 16th 2007 1:21AM
This game is not getting delayed...It's the same act Rockstar pulls off every year they release a GTA game. Come out with trailers every month or so and get the public hot with anticipation. What was unusual was them being at E3. Which most of the time they never are. Rockstar likes to wait til the last second to really show the public what the game is about.
apease @ Jul 16th 2007 1:22AM
I'm sure I'd read that both systems would get their own exclusive content a few months back also, but contract and ideas change. Could be that there's some haggling going on about co-marketing and such.
Ben @ Jul 16th 2007 2:17AM
the only content 360 is getting is the shit that wouldn't fit on the dvd. GTA4 is such a huge game they need blueray to fit all the data. So microsoft is making a big deal about having 'extra' content when all they are getting is the shit that their gimped console couldn't handle. The 50 mil was to keep R* from talking
miguelon918 @ Jul 16th 2007 2:26AM
The exclusive content will be inside the developers studio videos ¬¬
cjnwo4life @ Jul 16th 2007 1:27PM
And what did RockStar or Take-Two say about what phil said?
Nothing! Until they speak, everything else is tabloid gossip!
Ian @ Jul 16th 2007 3:36AM
I'd imagine GTAIV could easily be delayed.... I've heard that currently the game only really works on PC and the console builds are running at uber-slow framerates to the point that both MS and Sony are supplying developers to Rockstar to optimise the engine...
Maurice_Chavez @ Jul 17th 2007 11:14AM
Sony won't talk about exclusive content right away, it would be a dumb move to let competition know what your system will feature.
The PS3 version will be superior, mark my words.
insane257 @ Jul 16th 2007 3:27PM

I'm in agreement with Ben, i've never thought of it like that. PS3 version will probably be better anyway, just because they can fit more on a blu-ray disc.
UltimateNinja9 @ Jul 16th 2007 10:25AM
360 gets exclusive GTA4 bonus content, but GTA5 will be PS3 exclusive.
The Truth @ Jul 16th 2007 10:30AM
All aboard the rumor and hype train.. which is SONY. Fanboys pay their ticket and board EVERYTIME!!
thebigfatj @ Jul 16th 2007 12:04PM
Nick,
You haven't been paying attention to any of the details for the downloadable content, have you?
--------
"If we can think of anything, we'd imagine that Sony is trying to get the content for the 360 version over to the PS3 version either as standard Blu-ray extras on the game disc (so they aren't technically breaking the "exclusive downloadable content" clause or whatever)"
--------
Rockstar is developing the 360-exclusive content to be released in 1H 2008 on the 360. Then it is planning on releasing another pack of 360-exclusive content in 2H 2008. So not only would this be unavailable to be put onto the disc when GTA is released, but it will hold development back and ensure that the 360 gets a bunch of exclusive content developed for it.
It's not all roses for MS fanboys, though -- the $50 million was a cash advance that Microsoft gave rockstar against their sales on Live. So this isn't going to be free content, but it still ensures that the 360 will be the best platform for GTA.
lalocsta @ Jul 16th 2007 1:45PM
MS paid all that money to ensure they wont get gta4 a year later than sony it would be cool if the online play was ps3 and 360 combined that would be better for the gamer
Ciaran @ Jul 16th 2007 12:52PM
I didn't think I would actually get mentioned. Just glad to help out :)
I hope we are getting some content but I doubt it's the same as the 360.
Popfrogs @ Jul 16th 2007 2:57PM
I'm betting this game will be late and will be a let down. Nothing I've seen so far from screenshots to trailers makes it look like it's running on this generation's hardware. Looks like a beefed-up PS2 game, which is to say, unimpressive.
knoxin @ Jul 17th 2007 4:00AM
where do all get this shit ? the PS3 and the XBOX360 version will be identical on the disc no diffrence's
xbox360 will have 2 epic content sets for it
Rockstar have always been for MS
sony screwd rockstar for the last time ps check the web and you will find this stuff out, damm fanboy wars, always some shit going off, can't we just be friends its not like we out number you lol oh we do lol, only kidding
never$$hort @ Jul 16th 2007 4:36PM
Rockstars developers said early on that the 360 is limited in space and will hinder development. Ps3 has all the extra space because of Blu ray and prob will contain everything M$ bribed Rockstar to put exclusively on the 360.
Jason @ Jul 16th 2007 8:09PM
god i love how you hear "we have an idea but we can't discuss it" and you immediately jump to some totally irrelevant point....
"OMFG!! he said he can't talk!!! we're getting episodic content!!! OMFG!!!oneone!"
fanbois of the world! unite!!
